The objective ofLevel 2 is to give students success with fundamentalskills. Students learn to float without support and torecover to a vertical position. This level marks thebeginning of true locomotion skills. Students exploresimultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions ofthe front and back to lay the foundation for futurestrokes. Students also add to the self-help and basicrescue skills they learned in Level 1.Level 3: Stroke DevelopmentPre-requisite: Level 2 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 2 skills. The objective ofLevel 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providingadditional guided practice. Students learnto coordinate the front crawl and back crawl andare introduced to elements of the butterfly andtreading water. Students also learn rules for headfirstentries and begin to learn to enter the waterheadfirst from the side of the pool. Additionalsafety skills are also presented.Level 4: Stroke ImprovementPre-requisite: Level 3 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 3 skills. The objective ofLevel 4 is to develop confidence in the strokeslearned thus far and to improve other aquaticskills. Students are helped in improving their skillsand increasing their endurance by swimmingfamiliar strokes for greater distances. Studentscontinue to build on the butterfly and areintroduced to the elementary backstroke. Basicsof turning at a wall are also introduced.Level 5: Stroke RefinementPre-requisite: Level 4 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 4 skills. The objective ofLevel 5 is coordination and refinement of strokes.Participants refine their performance of all thestrokes and increase their distances. Flip turns onthe front and back are introduced.Level 6: Swimming and Skill ProficiencyPre-requisite: Level 5 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 5 skills. This level polishesall strokes learned in previous levels.
