Purpose: Builds on<strong>the</strong> fundamental skill <strong>of</strong> Level 1. The objective <strong>of</strong>Level 2 is to give students success with fundamentalskills. Students learn to float without support and torecover to a vertical position. This level marks <strong>the</strong>beginning <strong>of</strong> true locomotion skills. Students exploresimultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> front and back to lay <strong>the</strong> foundation for futurestrokes. Students also add to <strong>the</strong> self-help and basicrescue skills <strong>the</strong>y learned in Level 1.Level 3: Stroke DevelopmentPre-requisite: Level 2 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 2 skills. The objective <strong>of</strong>Level 3 is to build on <strong>the</strong> skills in Level 2 by providingadditional guided practice. Students learnto coordinate <strong>the</strong> front crawl and back crawl andare introduced to elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> butterfly andtreading water. Students also learn rules for headfirstentries and begin to learn to enter <strong>the</strong> waterheadfirst from <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pool. Additionalsafety skills are also presented.Level 4: Stroke ImprovementPre-requisite: Level 3 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 3 skills. The objective <strong>of</strong>Level 4 is to develop confidence in <strong>the</strong> strokeslearned thus far and to improve o<strong>the</strong>r aquaticskills. Students are helped in improving <strong>the</strong>ir skillsand increasing <strong>the</strong>ir endurance by swimmingfamiliar strokes for greater distances. Studentscontinue to build on <strong>the</strong> butterfly and areintroduced to <strong>the</strong> elementary backstroke. Basics<strong>of</strong> turning at a wall are also introduced.Level 5: Stroke RefinementPre-requisite: Level 4 certificate or demonstratedcompetency in Level 4 skills. The objective <strong>of</strong>Level 5 is coordination and refinement <strong>of</strong> strokes.Participants refine <strong>the</strong>ir performance <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>strokes and increase <strong>the</strong>ir distances.
