A History of Giving
American Family Children’s Hospital traces its roots to the story of Mary Cornelia
Bradley, a little girl born to Dr. Harold Cornelius Bradley, a UW biochemistry
professor and his wife Mary Josephine (Crane) Bradley of the renowned Chicago
industrialist Crane family.
Stricken with measles at age 6, Mary died in 1916 from meningitis shortly before
her seventh birthday.
Deeply heartbroken by the loss of their firstborn child, the Bradleys’ loving
tribute to Mary would become a pediatric research and teaching hospital built in
connection with the UW Medical School.
This hospital—funded primarily by the Bradleys’ efforts—opened in 1920 as the
Mary Cornelia Bradley Hospital for the Study of Children’s Diseases.
After several moves and expansions over the next nine decades, the Bradleys’
legacy would emerge in 2007 as the world-class American Family Children’s Hospital.
grandfather Cornelius Beach
To ensure that children and families from Wisconsin and beyond continue to receive the very best medical
care, we have established the mary cornelia bradley society. its purpose is simple: to recognize philanthropy
committed to continued excellence at American Family Children’s Hospital.
the mary cornelia bradley society recognizes four levels of philanthropic commitment: Legacy (estate gifts);
Legends (one-time or cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more); Guardians (one-time or cumulative gifts of $10,000
through $24,999); and Ambassadors (gifts of $1,000 or more within a single calendar year).
As every gift designation is a very personal decision, American Family Children’s Hospital development staff is
available for consultation with anyone interested in learning more about joining The Mary Cornelia Bradley Society.
A message from the Co-Chairs of the American Family Children’s Hospital
Development Partners Advisory Board: Jack Salzwedel (left in photo),
President and Chief Operating Officer of American Family Insurance and
John Flad (right in photo), President of Flad Development.
dear friends:
There really is something incredibly special about the way that American
Family Children’s Hospital just tugs at your heart. Maybe it is because we
wish the words “children” and “hospital” never had to be said together or
perhaps we personally know a child, grandchild or family friend who has needed
this world-class, yet warm and friendly pediatric medical facility.
Thanks to your generous support over the years, American Family Children’s Hospital is caring
for patients not only from throughout Wisconsin, but across the Midwest and beyond. In light of this growing demand, we have
already begun raising money to finish those spaces in the hospital earmarked for future expansion. Priority one is to complete the
now vacant 6th floor by adding: (1) a 12-bed, Level 4, high-acuity neonatal intensive care unit (nicu) serving babies requiring
complex surgery and medical intervention; and (2) a 14-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to complement our existing
21-bed picu. our goal is to open both units by January 2013.
Your kindness and generosity makes a tremendous difference every single day. on behalf of the entire advisory board, thank you
for all you do for hospitalized kids.
Sincerely,
Jack C. Salzwedel, Co-Chair John J. Flad, Co-Chair
