Page 6Whilst on the College grounds, students are permitted to access mobile phones and portable music devices during recess andlunchtime, as well as before and after the official commencement and completion of school. During all other times, thesedevices should be turned off and be out of sight. They can only be used during class time with teacher permission.During off-campus activities, phones and portable music players may only be used at times when students are given explicitpermission by supervising staff.The audio, camera or video recording functions of phones and portable music devices are to be disabled by students at school,during off-campus activities, at bus transfer points or when travelling to and from school on public transport. These functionsmay only be enabled under the direction of a teacher when needed to satisfy the educational requirements of the learningactivity.The College accepts no responsibility for phones, portable and music devices which are lost, damaged or stolen whilst on theCollege premises, during off-campus activities or whilst the student is travelling to and from school.IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINESMobile phones and portable music players used outside permitted times without teacher permission e.g. during class time, willbe confiscated and stored safely. The following steps regarding their return will be followed.On the first occasion, the phone or portable music player will be confiscated, given to the Learning Culture Centre. Thestudent would need to complete a restorative contract on Mobile Phone and Portable Music Player usage before thedevice will be returned. This contract would be sent home to parents.On the second occasion, the phone or portable music player will be confiscated, given to the Learning Culture Centre,parents will be contacted and the phone will be returned after a week. On the third occasion, the phone or portable music player will be confiscated and returned only to the parents. At thispoint, should the phone continue to be a necessity, as agreed to by parents and the College, it will need to be signed inand out at the beginning and end of each day. This is to be done at the Learning Culture Centre.In all cases, students will be asked to turn the phone off, leave the SIM card in and, at some stage, during recess orlunch, go to the office in order to contact parents and let them know they cannot be contacted by mobile. This is toavoid needless angst on the part of parents wishing to contact children and not being aware of why they cannot.If a mobile phone is used in any of the following ways, the students involved will face further disciplinary actionStoring, transferring or accessing pornographic images or similarly inappropriate material Enabling the camera, video or audio recording functions of the phone or portable music player at the College, whileinvolved in off-campus activities or travelling to and from school on public transport.Mobile phones are never to be brought into examination rooms. This applies for College as well as VCAA and other conductedexaminations.It is a criminal offence to use a mobile phone to menace, harass or offend another person. The Crimes Legislation Amendment(Telecommunications Offences and Other Measures) Act 2004 provides for offences under the Criminal Code Act 1995. Assuch, the College may involve the police if there is suspicion that such an offence has occurred. Our charter is to support each of our students in every possibleway as they learn and develop in a range of different ways including Intellectually, Socially, Emotionally and Physically.We have enjoyed a very positive start with our students. We appreciate the efforts parents have gone to ensuring studentsare correctly equipped and attired. Students seem to have adjusted to the size of the school and learned their way aroundvery quickly. For the first week, our students are given some latitude with respect to arriving at each class on time andwith all of the learning materials they require. Following this initial period, students will start to receive consequencesaimed at encouraging them to appropriately develop their organisational skills.Students have been given three copies of their timetable - one for their study planner, one for the back of their locker doorand the other to be taken home and put on the fridge. We request that parents support their students organisation bychecking the timetable and having regular discussions about what they need to take to school each day (If they forget totake equipment to class and it is in their locker, they still have access to it but if they have left it home, they cannot accessit). Students are expected to have their study planner with them EVERY lesson.Please contact your student’s Learning Group Teacher by phone or email with any concerns or good news about progress.Please ensure the College has your current email address because it is such an effective form of communication withparents. This year we have a new team working with the Year 8students.This year has begun in a very positive way with Year 8 students settling in quickly. A focus on the college values ofAchievement, Respect, Community and Commitment with students having a clear understanding of their expectations atDrouin Secondary College.Coming up on March 19 th to 23 rd students will participate in the Year 8 camp to the Summit in Trafalgar. This will be anexciting and enjoyable experience for everyone who attends.
