FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESKYou’ve probably heard by now, there is a new director intown! A caption in the recent LSU Reveille (campus paper)read, “Director Takes Over Reins of the EHSP at LSU.” It’sall true; however, the leader is only as good as the team, andthe EHSP team is world class and multitalented, consistingof clinical specialists in anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, ophthalmology, reproduction, and surgery. The EHSP has premier researchers investigating seriousdebilitating equine diseases such as laminitis, gastriculcer disease, recurrent airway obstruction (RAO, COPD),degenerative joint disease (arthritis), long bone fracturesand break down injuries, reproductive diseases (infertility, metritis), and infectious diseases (Equine Herpes VirusEncephalomyelitis, West Nile Virus). Also, the EHSP hasthe foremost disaster response program in the U.S. and hasresponded to horses and owners stranded by HurricanesKatrina, Rita, Gustav, and Ike.I am glad to be taking over the reins of such a prestigiousprogram and feel honored to be part of the team. Mybackground is extensive and began when I received DVM andMS degrees in 1983 from the Washington State UniversityCollege of Veterinary Medicine. After a year in private practicein Walla Walla, Wash., I completed an Internal MedicineResidency at The Ohio State University College of VeterinaryMedicine in 1987. After spending a year as a researchassociate in Equine Exercise Physiology, I took a facultyposition at the University of Tennessee College of VeterinaryMedicine, where I was an equine medicine clinician for 20years and rose to the rank of full professor with tenure andsection chief of Large Animal Internal Medicine. On August1, 2008, I took over the reins of the EHSP. My transition hasbeen seamless because of support from the fine faculty andDean Peter Haynes. However, the move to Baton Rouge was not timely as twohurricanes hit the area shortly after I arrived. HurricaneGustav ripped the roofoff my apartment andtoppled a giant WaterOak onto my newhouse. Power lines weresevered throughoutthe city. The only safehaven for animals inthe city was the LSUSVM, where a generatorsupplied power to treatemergencies (see “Colicand Condensation ‘Inthe Eye of the Storm’” onpage 6). Also, my officewas my home for twoweeks following the storm! The commute was short, and theaccommodations were warm and dry. I was thankful to havea place to stay during the crisis. Recently, I moved out of theapartment and into a newly rebuilt house. My wife and I arelooking forward to our adventures in Louisiana! The EHSP is striving to be the best. We have a tremendousteam in place and are looking forward to serving horseowners and referring veterinarians alike. We are movingforward at LSU with a new equine CT Table, MRI Unit, largeanimal isolation unit, and installation of new, state-of-the-artflooring. These technologies and upgrades will position usas the premier equine program in the U.S. and the world. We look forward to improving the health and happiness ofhorses, horse owners, and veterinarians in Louisiana and thesurrounding area. Thank you for your continued support of theEHSP and LSU.Frank M.
