However, for best results the ground or the material should not be wet at theoutset and ideally it should not be rained on during the first 24 hours of laying.Technix Mulch Softbond TM is ideal for small areas which were previously considered uneconomical to attendto and areas where digging foundations is a problem especially around tree roots. We are a manufacturer of rubber mulch and a reseller of polyurethane binder. The term ‘Softbond TM ’ is used when the twoproducts are mixed together. Fundamentally, the Softbond TM process is so simple, it has enabled many private individuals, companies, schools, landscapers andother organisations to lay the mix themselves, very successfully and there is a growing reputation that ‘anyone can do it’. But, please consider that it is still a practicalprocess with many variables which can affect the finished surface and therefore, our guidelines should be taken as such. They are not definitive instructions.t: +44 (0) 1489 789 944 f: +44 (0) 1489 798 866 e: sales@technix-rubber.com w: www.technix-rubber.com 23

Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I need safety surfacing under myplay equipment? There should be a surface with some formof impact attenuation under all items of playequipment. Tarmac, concrete, brick, stoneand wood have no impact attenuation. Ifthe highest position at which the body isnormally suspended is above 600mm (2ft)from the ground then an impact attenuatingsurface IS required. However, grass or topsoil is considered a good surface for fallheights of up to 1m.How does rubber safety surfacingcompare to loose-fill wood chips, sandor gravel? On average rubber safety surfacing will payfor itself in less than 3 to 4 years and will beless expensive than wood chips, sand orgravel over time. Loose fill materials becomedisplaced every time a child goes down aslide or swing and will need to be rackedback into place after each time the childrenplay on the surface. Wood chips will alsodisintegrate after several months. Loosefill material creates a mess over the entiresite. There are also additional concerns ofglass, animal waste, bugs and other bacteriathat can form. The cost of maintenanceand replacement yearly will equal the sameamount over 3 to 4 years as the initial rubbersafety surface installation. Is there a minimum quantity or area foran installation? No. repairs and small areas can be dealtwith on a day rate basis.Do you have your own designs(animals, shapes etc) or do I have tosupply them?Technix can provide basic designs at aminimal additional cost. We do ask that youprovide us with a scalable drawing that wecan produce in the field. For optimum installation werecommend concrete or tarmac. Are all the colours the same price?Technix offers a wide variety of coloursin our standard range. A separate Standard, EN 1177:2008, defines the Critical Fall Height tests. An instrumented ‘headform’representing a child’s head is dropped from various heights onto the test specimen, and its deceleration monitored. The greatest height offall that keeps maximum deceleration below the permitted level gives the Critical Fall Height rating for the surface product. If you require anyalternative heights from the ones displayed below, please contact our sales office.Under low play equipment with free height falls of under 600mm, the surface is only required to have ‘some impact-attenuating properties’.We recommend 20mm thickness in this case and for general run-about areas. The top of the impact-attenuating surface should be at the levelof the base level mark on the playground equipment.Wet Pour0.6m1.2m1.3mDefinitions Terms used within British/European StandardsBS EN 1177:2008 Impact absorbing playground surfacing - Safety requirements and test methodsBS 7188:1998 Impact absorbing playground surfacing - Performance requirements and testmethodsFree Fall Height The greatest vertical distance from the clearly intended body support to theimpact area belowType of UseStanding (from foot to surface).
