Avian and Falcon Medicine
and Laboratory Internship
Program
Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital offers an exciting
and rewarding opportunity to undergo an
intensive training in form of a 4 and 8 weeks
internship programs in the field of avian and falcon
medicine and laboratory diagnostics. This comprehensive
program covers practical and theoretical care and management
of falcons, husbandry and diseases. The avian and falcon medicine
internship program has been accredited internationally at many
universities in Europe, USA and Australia. A special internship program
has been introduced for veterinary nurses/assistants, too.
Moreover, the avian laboratory training program provides an extensive training
in selected avian laboratory examinations for interested laboratory technicians
and avian practitioners. The training program about falcon husbandry and
caretaking for falconers complements our internship program range.
Our trainees are veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary nurses/
assistants from around the globe including USA, UK, Germany, Italy,
France, Japan and Switzerland.
H.H. The Late Shk. Zayed Falcon
Release program
In 1995, the Falcon Release Program has been introduced by
H.H. The Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the
first president of the United Arab Emirates. The Abu
Dhabi Falcon Hospital is in charge of the rehabilitating
those falcons for release and of the medical
surveillance of the falcon release program.
The program’s objective was to return wild
peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) and
saker falcons (Falco cherrug) to their original
habitat to increase the wild falcon population.
In this great conservational effort so far more than
1200 falcons have been released in release locations like
Pakistan, Iran or Kazakhstan. Every year during spring time,
the falcons are taken from UAE to the release locations situated
on the natural migration routes of wild falcons. The final release
areas are carefully chosen in unpopulated regions and depend on the
availability of food like small birds and water e.g. rivers and lakes. Several
falcons are fitted with satellite transmitters to monitor the flight paths and
provide data about the survival rates of the released falcons.
ADFH Awareness and Education Program
Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital actively promotes disease awareness and
prevention campaigns by raising the awareness about the nature and
method of spread of diseases and by advising falconers on improving
falcons’ nutrition and husbandry. Furthermore, ADFH provides special
visits for schools to educate school children and university students as
well as special needs children on the beautiful tradition of falconry,
health issues and conservation of these endangered species
as well as on animal welfare for cats and dogs. Schools or
universities can book their visits directly at ADFH.
