How to use this guideThis little book is divided into three sections. In the first, literary locations are describedunder the headings of thirteen geographical areas in Scotland:12345678910111213Shetland (locations 1–2)Orkney (locations 3–5)The Outer Hebrides (locations 6–8)Highlands and Moray (locations 9–16)Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire (locations 17–19)Perthshire, Angus and Dundee (locations 20–27)Argyll, the Isles, Loch Lomond, Stirling and the Trossachs (locations 28–34)The Kingdom of Fife (locations 35–37)Edinburgh and the Lothians (locations 38–42)The Clyde Valley and Glasgow (locations 43–48)Ayrshire and Arran (locations 49–52)Dumfries and Galloway (locations 53–55)Scottish Borders (locations 56–60)p4p5p7p8p12p14p18p22p24p30p34p37p40Under each of these area headings are listed a number of specific locations, each associatedwith an individual writer or writers, including landscapes or buildings described in novelsand poems, places where you will find a museum, library or visitor attraction devoted to oneor more major author. Each of these locations is numbered from 1 to 60, although in somecases, such as the entries for Edinburgh and Glasgow, there are many places listed under theone number. In the second section is a list of the authors named in the first section, with a brief note aboutsome of their major features of interest, and why they are worth reading. Some will be morefamiliar than others, so major figures like Burns, Scott and MacDiarmid may be seen in thegeography of the national imagination alongside many other writers of different range andcalibre. In the final section of the book is a map of Scotland on which these numbers are printed, showing clearly where the locations are that may be visited.2All go into a rich and evolving fabric, and, to emphasise the point once again, this is no morethan a preliminary sample of the writers and literary locations to be discovered in Scotland.
