A word from our presidentDear friends and guest,I want to begin by thanking all those who assistedin putting this wonderful football publicationtogether! It is my pleasure to welcome all ouralumni, parents, students, friends and familymembers to another year of exciting PhantomFootball.Dear Cathedral Alumni, Parents and Friends:This past summer we started to build our newGymnasium/Science Center that will becompleted in the early winter of 2006! This newfacility will allow us to offer our students a better educational andathletic experience. Today Cathedral continues to offer anexceptional college preparatory education to all qualified studentswithout regard to their family’s income. This is made possiblebecause of the support received from our investors-alumni,foundations, Christian Brothers and friends. All our students takeseven periods of instruction a day. The number of AdvancedPlacement Courses has been increased. Enrollment at CathedralHigh School has increased from the 300’s in the early 1990’s to over650 students today. We take great pride in our rich athletic 80 year tradition at CathedralHigh School and we know that Coach Pearson will continue this richhistory. We are most proud of the hard work and dedicationcontributed by all our athletes during this summer and everydayafter school on the field. This dedication and hard work will be whatleads our student athletes to another successful season.SincerelyA WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENTI am excited to welcome you to another year of Phantom Football! I want to thank all those whoassisted in putting together this wonderful publication together. We are very proud of the hard workand dedication contributed by all our student athletes on /off the field during the summer and everydayafter school. This dedication and hard work will hopefully lead us to another successful season.Cathedral has made major strides to provide a quality college preparatory education for our students, particularly in these last ten years. Enrollment has grown from 370 in 1997 to 736 today. TheChristian Brothers who taught me as a student at Cathedral and have operated the school since itopened and continue to insure the accessibility of many low income students by providing over$600,000 in funding each year. The school now raises over $1,500,000 each year for scholarshipsand need based grants that are awarded to over 500 young men.To meet our student’s current and future needs, we have rebuilt our academic and athletic facilities. As we demolished our old 1940 gymnasium in late August four years ago, I had mixed feelings seeingthe gym go down. I was excited to see us replacing an old and worn facility and at the same timesad to see an “Old Friend” that meant so much to me as a student no longer standing. The generousdonation of $4,500,000 from our strongest alumni investor Mr. Melvin Henderson-Rubio allowed usto build a state-of-the-art sports complex. This investment has allowed our students the opportunityto practice and play on one of the top sports facilities in the state and will pay great dividends formany years to come. We know that our young men are working harder because of the investment offriends like Mr. Henderson-Rubio.As we start our football season I thank you for supporting our young men!Sincerely,Martin FarfanPresidentMartin Farfan ‘86President7CHS FOOTBALL 09.indd 79/22/09 7:31:48 AM

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORDear Fellow Phantoms,As we enter the 2009-2010 school year, Cathedral Athletics are truly on a dawn of a new age. With the rebirth of our gymnasium and weight room, and with the addition of the turf field, trackand score board, Cathedral’s facilities are without compare. But it is not the facilities that make Cathedral unique. Cathedral is blessed to be run by theChristian Brothers. The Brothers’ dedication to the students of Cathedral in and outside the classroomis an inspiration. This inspiration spills over into the students, faculty and alumni of Cathedral.Cathedral is also blessed by the students who attend. Their energy, spirit and commitment toeducation is contagious. It is a combination of our students, faculty, administration, parents and alumni that make the Cathedralathletic program special. Kevin Pearson leads his football team onto the Vic Balzano Familyfield focused on a CIF title, while Martin Farfan’s cross country team also has CIF championshipaspirations. Brady Lowdermilk has his water polo and swim team back in the pool as both ofthese programs continue to grow. In the winter we will see the return of both the basketball and thesoccer team who were highly ranked last year, and they both are primed to make deeper runs intothe CIF Playoffs. The Phantom golf and tennis teams both had players last year take league titlesand they and hoping for a return to the playoffs. Volleyball and baseball are in positions to improveupon their CIF second round losses last year, and move deeper into the CIF tournament. The trackteam will be defending Cathedral first ever State Championship under Coach Ivory. This is a greatera for Cathedral sports teams, and I am proud to be a part of them. So, Cathedral Phantoms, come out and support your teams this year, and I will see you on thefield, in the pool, on the courts, on the track, in the hills and down the fairway.God Bless you,John FerranteDean of Services,Athletic Director8CHS FOOTBALL 09.indd 89/22/09 7:31:52 AM

HEAD COACH KEVIN PEARSONTough, Disciplined and Exciting define the Cathedral High School Football teams under Head Coach KevinPearson. Coach Pearson graduated from South Gate High School in 1983 where he lettered in three sports,Football, Basketball & Baseball. He ended his playing career in 1984 at East L.A. College where he playedquarterback. He then earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Cal State Los Angelesand subsequently earned a Masters of Education Degree from Azusa Pacific University.Coach Pearson began coaching football at his high school alma mater before accepting a head coach positionat CHS in 1995. Pearson served as Head Coach at Taft High School for one year before returning in 2004. Hecurrently serves as Los Angeles Regional Director for FBU (The largest football camp in the country). Coachalso works several elite combines such as the ESPN, Nike and Schumann combines. In addition, he has alsocoached in many All-Star games.Coach Pearson had an immediate impact on the football program as he led the Phantoms to an 8-3 record anda first round playoff birth during his first season. During his second year at the helm, he directed the Phantomsto the CIF championship game, the school’s first such appearance since 1930. That same year also brought theschool’s first league title in 16 years and first outright league title since 1954. Under Coach Pearson, the Phantomswent on to win six consecutive league championships and earned playoff appearances in all 11 of his 13seasons, including five straight semifinal appearances. He has compiled a 118-36 (.766) won-loss record in those13 seasons.Despite moving up two divisions and competing against schools that have moved down divisions such asformer Division I Crespi and former Division III Serra, the Phantoms have stayed consistently ranked in the topthree in their division, as well as in the top ten in the state Division IV polls. Also, during those 13 seasons, over30 Phantom football players have earned all CIF honors, four were named Prep All-Americans, and over 20 havegone on to play NCAA football. The Phantoms’ offense has achieved great success during Coach Pearson’s tenure. Many state and two nationalrecords were set during his time. In fact, CHS is believed to be the only school to lead the state in rushing touchdownsone year and passing touchdowns the following year during the regular season. In 1997, running-backChris Hanks scored 49 touchdowns in the regular season and the very next year quarterback Robert De La Cruzthrew for 61, becoming the first quarterback in the nation to throw for 60 in a season. De La Cruz still holdsthe state record of 65 touchdowns for a season (1999). As a junior wide receiver Earvin Johnson tied the staterecord of 29 touchdown receptions in 1999 and ended his Cathedral career with a state record of 64. Indeed, the Phantoms have averaged almost 40 points a game during Coach Pearson’s twelve seasons. Statistics aside,Coach Pearson’s teams have been recognized for their discipline, fundamentals and execution.Even more impressive than the success on the field is the fact that Coach Pearson has a greater, more importantgoal for his players than just winning games. “It is my hope and desire that each young man who goes throughour program has a great experience and leaves a better person. I believe on working diligently on not only developinggreat student athletes, but great Christian men.” When asked for his program’s goal, Coach Pearsonanswered, “Our mission in this program above all else, isto glorify God through this game of football. I want eachyoung man to understand that this life is about glorifyingGod and not ourselves...that we were made by God andfor God.” Coach Pearson continues by saying “Hopefullythrough God’s grace we could all come to recognize andappreciate all of God’s blessings, especially His greatestgift of all, our Lord Jesus Christ.”Kevin and his wife Annalee have four children: sonsDevin and Evan and daughters Annalea and Miracle. Heand his family reside in West Covina. Coach Pearson canbe contacted at coachpearson@phantomfootball.com.14CHS FOOTBALL 09.indd 149/22/09 7:32:26 AM
