"TO US THERE IS ONE GOD."John Wesley preached a sermon on,and in support of, the Trinity, from1 John 5:7. In that sermon he quotesthe words of Servetus, viz., "I scrupleusing the words Trinity and Personsbecause I do not find those terms in theBible." His belief in the doctrine of theTrinity was based upon 1 John 5:7.Said he, "I would insist only on thedirect words, unexplained as they lie inthe text." Had the Sinaitic Manuscript(the oldest, most complete and mostauthentic MS.) been found in Wesley'stime, would he have believed in theunion of three persons in the Deity?We think not. He labored hard to provethis doctrine because he believed that1 John 5:7 was genuine.There is a good bit of sophism insome of Wesley's argument, as therealways is where men attempt to makeerror appear as truth. He asks--"Howdo the rays of light from a candlebrought into the room, instantly disperseinto every corner? Again, hereare three candles, yet there is but onelight. Explain this, and I will explainthe three one God."(1) We would suggest, bring three hundredor three thousand candles into theroom and there is but one light, in justthe same sense that the rays from thethree candles make but one light. (2)Bring a candle, an oil lamp, a gas lampor an electric lamp into the room;would not their light blend into one?Of these light-givers, might not onebe greater than all the others, and yetthe light, or rays of light, blend so as tobe one light? The lamps are not onelamp, yet they may be one in the senseof giving one light, because their raysof light so agree, or harmonize as toblend into one. Therefore we believe
