He remained there as headmaster until he retired in 1926."Mr. Crofts thus serves as a link with Birkenhead Institute in itsearliest years and can be seen on a photograph of the boys and staff, together with Mr. George Atkin, which was taken shortly, after theschool opened. A.; Bunbury, P.; Fogg, P.; Maskrey, D.E.SPEECHNIGHT.PEECH NIGHT was an agreeable occasion and rewarding enoughS to those who braved the blizzard for the reasonably warm hall of theTechnical College. It is the boys who are on show on this occasion, not the parents orteachers, and they showed up pretty well- they were neat and tidy, and well-behaved. Boys' singing is always a delight and the Choir sangwell but this cannot be said for the singing of the whole school, becausethe older boys seemed to leave the singing of Non Nobis Domine to thejunior boys.It was good to hear the Headmaster express his faith in the youngergeneration because only too many Heads take Speech Night as anopportunity to shie at tfie currently popular Aunt Sallies of watchingtelevision, going to Youth Clubs, and bad manners.Professor Goodwin, who presented the prizes, is an Old Boy of theSchool and he spoke well about our need to help those much lessfortunate thalli ourselves who live on the borderline of starvation. He isan agricultural chemist and his words carried weight.
