Message from the CEO
It is a privilege for us to highlight some of the
innumerable community partnerships that bring time and
talent to the success of Unity House. It is critically
important to any organization as complex as Unity House to
have a range of individuals, businesses, organizations, and
schools who bring their unique talents, business savvy, and
generosity to bear on behalf of our clients.
Our interview with Michael Castellana, President and CEO
of SEFCU, reveals that corporate philanthropy thrives when the spirit of giving is alive in the
organization’s leader. SEFCU staff host an annual all-day carnival for the 300 children from our three
Unity Sunshine sites, both funding and staffing the event. It’s a great, fun event, and one this big kid
never misses!
Housing is a huge issue for so many of our clients, and we could not provide it without the support of a
special group of landlords who are true friends to our clients. Many of our clients are living
independently for the first time, and our landlords go above and beyond to educate and attend to the
needs of them. Our landlords also contribute to special events, providing buses and funding for an
annual housing client trip to Lake George. Steve Ribet is featured here, but we want to give a shout
out of thanks to all of the exceptional landlords who support our housing programs.
Schools also get into the act, teaching children that it’s possible to improve your community, even
while still in elementary school. Shelly Failing’s sixth grade class at Robert C. Parker School,
spearheaded an enormous drive for clothing, household items, and food, all which were gratefully
received at our Street Ministry thrift store and food pantry.
When we look good, we feel good, right? Kelly Hart and Pam Wojeski, owners of Serenity Day Spa
sat next to me at a Rensselaer County Chamber Dinner and before I knew it, they were offering to host
one of our domestic violence clients every month, for a haircut, blow dry and manicure. This pampering
is especially appreciated by women who, as they emerge from violent relationships, are often
rebuilding their households from the ground up, and have no money for luxuries.
It’s ironic. Our community partners so often thank us, for giving them the opportunity to do something
that makes them feel so good. Despite those who claim there may be donor fatigue in these economic
tough times, at Unity House we have no evidence of it. Every year for the past seven years, private
contributions, the number of volunteers, and the number of community partnerships just keeps
growing. I think it is because everyone can appreciate the value of home, food, and safety, and at Unity
House, we are in the business of providing just that. Thanks for helping!

Share our time, our talents,
and our energy
Many institutions have mission statements and mottos that reside in dusty archives. Not so with
the Robert C. Parker School, whose motto reads:

This motto lives vibrantly through every child at Parker School, where each class gets involved in
annual service projects. Shelly Failing’s 6th grade class decided to spearhead a school-wide food and
clothing drive in the fall of 2008. As they geared up with posters, flyers and classroom visits designed

to encourage donations, the students also considered which
charity they wanted to support with their “time, talent, and
energy.” As a group, they determined that “local” and “nondenominational”
were important features to them, and
Unity House was chosen to be the beneficiary.
Donations began to pour in: mountains of clean, warm
clothing just in time to ward of winter, and all kinds of nonperishable
food. The students were most impressed when
five cartons of “Whoppers,” a popular candy, were donated.
When the drive ended, the work for the sixth-grade class
was only half over. Transporting the donations to Unity
House was a project in itself, involving three trips to Unity
House, two of them with Shelly’s piled-high pick-up truck.
The students also made the trip into Troy to take a tour of
Unity House’s food pantry and thrift store to better
understand the needs of children and families less
fortunate. These students, who among them plan careers as
doctors, designers, and artists, will certainly take this experience with them as they grow into fully
engaged members of their communities.

“When You Look Good, You Feel Good”
We all know the “new me” glow that comes with a fresh haircut, or a couple of hours of any
kind of personal pampering. These small luxuries – ones that many of us take for granted as
our due following a hard week – are something rarely available to women who have been traumatized
by violence that occurs within their own homes. But thanks to the generous spirits of Kelly Hart and
Pam Wojeski, owners of Serenity Day Spa in East Greenbush, some of these women are now treated
to a free haircut, blow-dry, and a manicure.
“We met Unity House CEO, Chris Burke at a Chamber meeting, and were excited to hear about the
work Unity House does to support victims of domestic violence,” says Kelly Hart.

they need to reclaim their lives.
In 2008, Unity House:
• Provided emergency shelter to
108 women and 55 children,
filling us to capacity every
night in 2008.
• Supported over 530 victims
and their children with
counseling, advocacy, case
management, legal
representation, and
employment and training
services.
• Answered the 24-hour New
York State Domestic Violence
Hotline 7,763 times to
provide information on
emergency shelter, domestic
violence and safety planning.

with our homes and families, and
wanted to contribute something.”
So once a month, the staff within the domestic violence
program at Unity House selects a client who seems
especially in need of a boost. That woman is whisked away
for an afternoon of special treatment within the nurturing
environment of Kelly and Pam’s East Greenbush salon.
“A little bit of special attention goes a long way for a
mother involved in a terrible custody fight for her children,
or a woman who wants to look her best for a job
interview,” reports Dacey Bonney, Domestic Violence
Program Director. “It’s really hard to convey how much this
service means to our clients.”

There’s No Place Like Home
Ilove this place,” said Beverly D, to her new landlord, Steve Ribet. It was 2003, and every time Steve
had occasion to talk to Beverly, she would anxiously inquire about whether she could stay in her
apartment. “I didn’t understand her fear,” says Steve today. Then he met Beverly’s caseworker, Lorie
Godfrey, who explained that some landlords didn’t want to rent to Unity House clients, many of whom
suffer from mental illness and/or addiction. Steve hadn’t noticed Beverly having any special needs, and
his apartment had passed Unity House inspection without his even realizing it. “My business principles
are grounded in my spiritual beliefs, and I would never rent a place that I wouldn’t have my family live
in.”
As Steve and his wife Marybeth began to invest in more properties, their partnership with Unity House
expanded. Today, 15 clients live in one of five buildings owned by Steve and Marybeth. Steve cites one
of his former renters, who now owns a home in Niskayuna, as an example of his high regard for the
counseling and support Unity House provides their housing clients.
The Office of Mental Health has strict requirements for the housing of the 62 clients served by
Transitional Apartment Services (TAS). Caseworkers must make weekly safety checks, and four times a
year a full assessment of code requirements is conducted. So Steve, and other area landlords work
hard to create safe, clean apartments. In addition, they

demonstrate patience with clients whose mental illness
may cause them to be high-demand tenants. “It takes a
special landlord to work with Unity House,” says Lorie, “and
we are blessed with 14 of them.” “A good environment is
essential to mental health,” she adds. “I’ve seen clients
sprout like flowers after moving into a beautiful apartment.”
When asked, Steve acknowledges that being a landlord can
be difficult. He has been called out of bed in the middle of
the night for problems that were non-emergencies. But he
understands that sometimes people living independently for
the first time need coaching, and he tries to provide that
service, even as he wields a wrench or a screwdriver. He
also believes that for everyone, mental health can be
enhanced by fresh paint, or new carpeting. Lorie couldn’t
agree more with the belief that one’s environment affects
one’s mental health.

For the Greater Good of Our Community
Depressed about the behavior of Wall Street executives? Well, pull up a chair and get to know
SEFCU, a Capital Region based financial institution. Your faith in business ethics – and active
corporate philanthropy – will be restored. In 2008, SEFCU returned 25 percent of its profits, totaling
$2 million, to the communities they serve. Both the Unity House food pantry and Unity Sunshine have
been beneficiaries of SEFCU giving.
“Local communities are the very heart and soul of SEFCU” says Michael J. Castellana, SEFCU's
President and CEO, and there is irrefutable evidence that he, his 620 employees, and the 186,000
credit union members – who together are SEFCU – walk that talk. “Sure, we are a business,”
Castellana continues, “but the better we perform financially, the better are the returns for our
members, and for those organizations that provide safety nets for people with urgent needs. Castellana
cites his strict, hard-working parents and the security of growing up in that environment as

from our qualified staff.
• Raised over $52,000 in
private dollars to send 120
children living in poverty to
the Unity House Traveling
Summer Day Camp.
instrumental in his special focus on helping children. “Every
child deserves a chance for a good start in life. Helping to
provide guidance, education and structure to children’s lives
is both a gift to individual children, and a real win for our
communities.”
SEFCU donates much more than money. The employees of
SEFCU provide hands-on help to their selected charities, and
that is nowhere more evident than at SEFCU’s annual
carnival for the children attending one of Unity House’s
three specialized preschools. A group of SEFCU employees,
led by Carol Brinkman, SEFCU Foundation's Executive
Director, fund, organize, and staff this day-long celebration,
held every fall. “The SEFCU Carnival provides huge
excitement for our kids, and a wonderful day for our
teachers, as well," says Kevin Grace, Director of Youth
Programs at Unity House. “The carnival has become a
tradition that the kids remember from year to year.”
"People want to be part of something bigger than
themselves," reflects Castellana. "SEFCU's goal is to provide that opportunity to our employees and our
members; all to the greater good in our communities."
