Accepting on behalfof Jerry Ross and <strong>Winfield</strong> schools <strong>wa</strong>s Shelley Harris, left, who serves as copresidentof the combined PTO, and Karen Krause, Porter Lakes PTO president.The donation came from Marathon’s recent fall fundraiser where 2 cents pergallon of gas sold on 11 consecutive Thursdays <strong>wa</strong>s to be split among the threeschools. This year marks the fourth such PTO fundraiser in the last five years forthe local convenience store and fuel station. Tarun Patel, who owns Four SeasonsMarathon, said he is proud that the donation will go to<strong>wa</strong>rd the educationalneeds of area kids. Krause and Harris said their PTOs help fund the purchase ofclassroom supplies for teachers, who often pay out of their own pockets whenfunds are scarce. This is the HighSchool training orchestrafor the Chicago Symphony.Daniela auditioned and <strong>wa</strong>saccepted as a member of theirtop orchestra. 8 December 10, 2010Local radio host comfortable in ‘new home’<strong>Winfield</strong> man hits ground running in career behind micBy Mike Gooldy<strong>American</strong> EditorA lot has changed for TavisBuchan in the last 18 months.He got married and movedfrom the Seattle-Vancouverarea to Northwest Indiana.What didn’t change <strong>wa</strong>shis passion for broadcastingand his mission to informand entertain from behind themic.Buchan is producer andhost for the weekday show“Lakeshore Drive” airingfrom 4 to 5:30 p.m. onLakeshore Public Radio 89.1FM, the local NPR affiliate.Buchan, 30, lives in<strong>Winfield</strong> with his wife,Maureen Merritt Buchan,formerly of Lakes of theFour Seasons. The two, whomet in the Pacific Northwest,were married in July. Theydecided to move to <strong>Winfield</strong>in September last year.Buchan grew up inBellingham, Wash., a Seattlesuburb. While attending acommunity college, he gota broadcasting internship in1999 that led to a job opportunity.“I’ve al<strong>wa</strong>ys been interestedin the arts and broadcastingis an art,” Buchan said.“The opportunities kept comingat Cascade Radio Group,so I decided to seize the momentbecause I could comeback to school later.”He started at the bottomat Cascade by doing lots of“grunt work,” whatever he<strong>wa</strong>s told to do. Soon he <strong>wa</strong>shired to produce a morningshow and graduated into anon-air stint. Buchan laterhosted an afternoon classicTavis Buchan is heardweekdays from 4 to 5:30p.m. on 89.1-FM.rock show. “I’m proud ofwhat I accomplished there.”In the meantime, in2005, he attended two filmschools—The Seattle FilmInstitute and Northwest FilmInstitute in Bellingham,Wash.—while juggling hisradio gig. Buchan said hegrew up as an avid radio listenerand would call in to stationsbecause he <strong>wa</strong>nted to bea part of it.“That’s what I enjoy aboutthis, being able to put mystamp on something engaging,”Buchan said. “I like toconnect with the audience, toinform them.”The Buchans became engagedin Washington andMaureen moved to <strong>Winfield</strong>in July 2009. Tavis followedwith a one-<strong>wa</strong>y plane ticketin September that year. Thetwo flew back west to getmarried in July 2010.When he purchased theone-<strong>wa</strong>y airfare for the2,300-mile trip he did notknow where his broadcastingpassion would take him next.After making the roundsat a number of Chicago andNorthwest Indiana stations,he heard about LakeshorePublic Radio. “I got my footin the door,” he said. “Theysaw my ambition and abilitiesand began giving memore work.
