ClarkeThe warmest summer for a decade and an extremely dry autumn were themost noteworthy features of the 1969 weather. The w<strong>in</strong>ter came late; aftera mild January, a severe spell developed <strong>in</strong> February, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g a tremendousblizzard on the 7th after nightfall and <strong>in</strong>cidentally produc<strong>in</strong>g thecoldest night of the year (15°F.) Temperatures cont<strong>in</strong>ued below normalthroughout March-snow from the February blizzard was still ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>drifts on 6 March-and the spr<strong>in</strong>g was cold and wet. However, <strong>in</strong> May,temperatures rose above normal and rema<strong>in</strong>ed so throughout June andJuly. On 16 July, the hottest day of the year, R.A.F. Oakmgton recorded91°F. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer, 15 days had maxima over 80°F.-the greatest
