FLUENCYGood readers are fluent readers. They decodewords automatically and continuously group andregroup words in ways that promoteunderstanding. Fluency is important: bothaccurate word reading and comprehension arerelated to fluency (Shinn & Good, 1992). Becausefluent readers identify words “by sight,” they candevote time and effort that might have gone todecoding words to understanding what they arereading. It is necessary to read frequently toexpand the sight word vocabulary readers needto read fluently, and this is one area wherestruggling readers fall behind. Fluency does not“cause” comprehension; however, it is anecessary component of successful reading, andfluency instruction may be useful for strugglingadolescents, who often are not fluent readers(Rasinski, Padak, McKeon, Wilcong, Friedauer, & Heim, 2005).Most of the research findings about the benefits of fluency instructionconcern readers whose reading fluency is at or below third grade readingexpectations. Fluency instruction for older struggling readers may also beappropriate (Wexler, Vaughn, Edmonds and Reutebuch, in press). Consider that:• Students with reading difficulties often struggle to read fluently;• Fluency instruction is not included in most reading programs; andThe ChallengeMany adolescent struggling readers do notread fluently, even when they decode wordsaccurately. While the ability to readautomatically and accurately is instrumental tounderstanding text, most secondary levelreading programs do not include instruction influency.A SuggestionIn addition to instruction in other essentialareas of reading, students who read slowlyand with difficulty should receive repeatedopportunities to practice fluent reading orallywith feedback from a more proficient reader—either a teacher or a peer.• The ability to read accurately and automatically is associated with readingcomprehension and learning from text, which is especially important foradolescent readers who are faced with learning a great deal of challengingcontent-area material through text reading.9
