ETX-203AMUniversal Carrier Ethernet Demarcation DeviceThe ETX-203AM modular uplink designenables utilizing a single Ethernetdemarcation device over different accessnetworks and infrastructures, whileproviding uniform service. The followinguplink modules are available:• GbE – Two redundant combo ports(SFP/copper)• EFM (Ethernet in the first mile) DSL –One or two SHDSL ports providing upto 22 Mbps over bonded SHDSL.biscopper lines.MARKET SEGMENTS ANDAPPLICATIONSETX-203AM is used as an Ethernetdemarcation device that separates theservice provider network, the accessprovider network, and the customernetwork, providing proactive servicemonitoring and easy fault localizationthroughout the entire network (seeFigure 1).ETHERNETClassificationTraffic is mapped to the Ethernet flowsusing very flexible classification criteriabased on incoming port (port-basedall-to-one bundling), VLAN ID, VLANpriority, IP precedence, DSCP, Ethertype, and IP/MAC source/destination address.Classification is defined for both VLANtagged as well as untagged traffic.OAMFeaturing ultra fast, hardware-poweredprocessing, ETX-203AM performs OAM andPM measurements in line rate withmaximum precision, offering the followingpowerful benefits:• Immediate detection of loss ofcontinuity (LOC), ensuring under 50 msprotection switching• Highly accurate frame lossmeasurements of live traffic• Flow-level (per CoS) monitoring, enabling simultaneous processing ofmultiple OAM sessions with E-LAN andE-Tree support• Non-disruptive MAC and IP levelloopback testing of network integrity.ETX-203AM provides these types ofEthernet OAM:• Single-segment (link) OAM accordingto IEEE 802.3-2005 (formerly 802.3ah)for remote management and faultindication, including remote loopback, dying gasp with SNMP trap, and MIBparameter retrieval. Active and passivemode are supported.• End-to-end connectivity OAM based onIEEE 802.1ag that enables Ethernetservice providers to monitor theirservices proactively and guarantee thatcustomers receive the contracted SLA• End-to-end service and performancemonitoring based on ITU-T Y.1731.Fault monitoring and end-to-endperformance measurement includedelay, delay variation, frame loss andavailability.Traffic Management/QoSDifferent service types require differentlevels of QoS to be provided end-to-end.QoS can be defined per subscriber as wellas per service. QoS has three aspects: ratelimitation, traffic shaping, and trafficprioritization.Traffic policing is applied per flow or groupof flows, and operates according to thedual token bucket mechanism based onuser-configurable CIR + CBS and EIR + EBS.Traffic can be limited to the line rate orthe data rate.ForwardingEvery flow per EVC or EVC.cos has its ownqueues and scheduler supporting strictpriority and weighted fair queues (WFQ).Queue blocks of eight queues per EVC arescheduled and shaped, forming an H-QoSmodel with shaped services and prioritizedclasses of service. The WRED mechanism isused for smart packet drop.Layer-2 Control ProcessingThe device can be configured to forwardLayer-2 control frames per EVC (includingother vendors’ L2CP frames) across thenetwork, to peer supported protocols(IEEE 802.3-2005 and LACP), or to discardthe L2CP frames.10 GbEServiceProviderNetworkGbESHDSLETX-203AMGbEGbECustomerPremisesHeadquartersDSLAMETX-203AMCustomerPremisesSDH/SONETN x E1GbERICi/ETXCustomerPremisesFigure 1. Data SheetThe VLAN priority bit in Ethernet framescan be modified at network ingressaccording to the ‘color’ of the frame. Thisallows service consistency and QoScontinuity across color-aware (dropeligible-enabled) as well as color-unawarenetworks.Smart SFPsIntegrated management of MiRICi smartSFPs provides TDM (E1/T1/E3/T3/OC-3/STM-1) connectivity over PDH orSDH legacy networks. ETX-203AMsupports configuration and statisticcollection for the smart SFP TDM port.RESILIENCYDying GaspETX-203AM reports power failures todefined network management stations bysending an IEEE 802.3-2005 message orSNMP trap, thus enabling the unit toproperly disconnect from the networkwith notification of the reason for theservice problem.Fault PropagationThe unit provides a user-configurable faultpropagation mechanism in thenetwork-to-user or user-to-networkdirection.When a link failure is detected or OAMfailure received, ETX-203AM can shutdown the affected port or forward theOAM failure message. The faultpropagation mechanism enables routersand switches connected to both ends ofthe link to reroute the traffic to theredundancy path.Link ProtectionETX-203AM provides the followingnetwork interface protection modes:• 802.3ad link aggregation (LAG),providing 1:1 link protection with LinkAggregation Control Protocol (LACP)support• Dual homing (1:1), allowingETX-203AM units to be connected totwo different upstream devices.Ethernet Path ProtectionETX-203AM applies standard ITU-T G.8031Ethernet Linear Protection switching forfast protection of one or more EVCs on anend-to-end. The standard implementationensures interoperability with third-partydevices. With standard APS functionality,Ethernet OAM messages providebandwidth-efficient unidirectional orbidirectional 1:1 protection. The EVC protection path can be configuredon the same network port, enabling thetransport network to provide analternative path for the working andprotecting path. It can also be configuredon separate network ports, addingprotection at the access layer andenabling load balancing on networkinterfaces by splitting traffic between thetwo network ports. The performance of the hardware-basedEthernet OAM together with protectionswitching for physical layer failure ensuresfast protection in any scenario. The flow level protection provides a fullset of manual commands for maintenancepurposes.MANAGEMENT AND SECURITYThe following security protocols areprovided by ETX-203AM to ensure clientserver communication privacy and correctuser authentication:• SNMPv3• RADIUS (client authentication)• TACACS+ (client authentication andaccounting)• SSH (secure shell communicationsession)• SFTP (secure file transfer).PortsThe unit can be managed using thefollowing ports and applications:• Local management via an ASCIIterminal connected to the RS-232 port• Out-of-band management via adedicated management port.• Remote inband management via useror network ports routed via separateVLANs, Telnet, or an SNMP-basedmanagement system.Command Line Interface (CLI)Databases and scripts of commonly usedcommands can be easily created andapplied to multiple units using commandline interface.Trap SynchronizationTraps are sent with sequence IDs tonetwork manager groups, to enable themanagers to detect when traps are lostand request the traps be sent again.Zero Touch ProvisioningIP address and mask, default gateway, andsoftware and configuration files can beautomatically obtained using standardDHCP client functionality. This enablesseamless node setup and configurationfor quick and scalable network setup anddeployment as well as configurationconsistency when nodes must bereplaced.MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICSRFC-2544The device provides a built-in RFC-2544wirespeed traffic generator and analyzerfor unidirectional and bidirectional testingof throughput, latency, and frame loss.Based on standard OAM messages, thetests can be simultaneously performedover multiple flows, at the EVC.CoS level.Enhanced RFC-2544 functionality providesservice-oriented KPI analysis. SLAconformance is measured per servicebandwidth and packet size, within auser-defined amount of time, for fasterservice introduction.
