July 2011Pulaski Dental Assistant Program GraduationCongratulations to the Summer 2011 American Red CrossDental Assistant Program trainees who graduated on June15. These volunteers completed 40 hours of classroom trainingand 200 hours of chairside training. The volunteers have beena tremendous help to the Pulaski Dental Clinic, and the clinic iseager to begin another volunteer program this fall but has notyet released dates. Contact the Kaiserslautern Red Crossoffice for additional information.Dental Assistant Program GraduatesDilobar BakhrievaKeishla Soto-CruzQuineka Shawntae ThomasDebbie ZavalaA Note from Our Senior Station ManagerMany other mobile staff will understand that I depart on mydeployment with excitement! I am off to Afghanistan in only a fewdays now, and promise to stay as safe as possible. I will think aboutall of you having this cool German summer. Here's some general information that may be of interest to newerfolks. American Red Cross mobile staff members include yourSenior Station Managers, Station Managers, and Assistant StationManagers. In our area of responsibility that includes myself, RenaForcum of Spangdahlem, who is also deploying on this rotation, andAssistant Station Managers Austin Young and Donna Burkee. Donnadeployed last year and Austin the year before. I guess it was myturn! Our deployments are determined by our headquarters inWashington DC, and local station needs are not the priority. Theneeds of Red Cross downrange are the drivers forstaffing assignments. While deployed, our primary responsibility isthe processing of emergency communication messages to deployedAmerican military members and DoD civilians and contractors toenable commands to make informed leave decisions. While this isthe same mission we have at our duty locations, the mission is muchmore intense in war zones. After the message delivery mission ismet, there are other activities in which Red Cross is involved indeployment locations. We make humanitarian visits to the militarymedical facilities and operate hospitality and computer centers insome locations. We work 10 to 12 hours a day, 24/7. Weexperience the same "incoming" and other hazardous activities thatour military heroes experience. We are fortunate in that we are notallowed to leave our installations and participate in convoys. InAfghanistan, we are assigned quarters which house four people, notall Red Cross. There are wooden dividers between the bedspaces. Due to nighttime workers sleeping during daytime hours, the overhead lights are never turned on, so we all need to have bedlamps. There are 2-story shower and toilet units, which sometimeshave hot water. I suspect in the summer time, this will not be anissue.I only share this so everyone has a small idea as to what life for aRed Cross worker entails. I hope to hear from the newsletter staff,so I can provide monthly updates, if you'd all like to hear about myadventures. Until then . . . farewell, and I'll be back in the office thefirst week of January 2012.KathyKathleen I.
