SINGLE PARENTING: THE CHALLENGES OF A CAREER WOMAN

he word Single parent was 

allien in our grammatical

prominent and hence a course to 

reckon with. A single parent is a 

parent not living with a spouse or 

partner and has most of the dayday 

responsibility in raising the 

child(ren).This status is attained 

as a result of death occurrence of 

one partner, separation, divorce 

e.t.c. 

They are usually referred to as 

the child(ren) primary 'care 

giver'; meaning the parent the 

child have residency with 

majority of the time. 

Although this can be associated 

to both the Male and Female 

gender as either party has a fair 

share of burden or challenges 

attached to this status, but our 

society recognises the woman as 

the primary 'care giver' in cases 

of separation or divorce. 

Considering the recent women 

campaign for gender equality 

which enables them to have a 

head to head run on all fronts 

with the male counterpart would 

make any woman that desires to 

become a professional in any 

field of study or occupation, thus 

such a woman is described as a 

'career woman'. 

Marrying both status of being a 

career woman and a single 

parent come with its own woes; 

here are few possible challenges 

that is attributed to this dual 

status; 

Firstly is Task Overload: A single 

p a re n t ' s re s p o n s i b i l i t i e s 

certainly do not stop the moment 

work ends each day. You may 

have what seems like a full day's 

worth of tasks awaiting you at 

homefrom cooking dinner to 

doing laundry to helping your 

child with homework. Although 

these same obligations are faced 

by working mothers who are 

married, a single parent has to 

face these responsibilities alone, 

without the helping hand of a 

husband. 

For that reason, many single 

parents feel chronically fatigued. 

They often feel physically and 

emotionally exhausted and find 

themselves yelling more at their 

children. As their youngsters 

move through middle childhood 

and normally become more 

opinionated and challenging of 

their parents' points of view, more 

arguments may develop. 

Secondly is Reduced Time and 

Energy for Personal Pursuits; 

Single parents often feel they 

have no time for themselves, 

whether it is to exercise at the 

gym or to have dinner with 

friends. Even if they can find time 

for these individual pursuits, 

they may be so tired that they 

have no energy for them. Being 

deprived of sleep will take a toll 

on anyone, parent or child. Sometimes 

the best that you can do for 

yourself and your child is to get 

more sleep each night. 

For some single parents, during 

or after the divorce, their lack of 

energy is dramatic and part of a 

more ser ious depression. 

Persistent sadness, irritability, 

difficulty sleeping, and weight 

gain or loss are all signs of 

depression. A depressed parent 

has much less to offer a child. 

Thirdly is When Children 

Become Burdens; Single parents 

sometimes begin to perceive the 

responsibilities of child-raising 

as overwhelming. Even the most 

routine events in their child's 

lifecarpooling, events at school, 

o r n o r m a l o p p o s i t i o n a l 

behaviorbecome burdens for 

parents struggling to squeeze 

everything into their day. Single 

parents experience a great deal 

of tension and sometimes guilt 

that comes with not being able to 

attend to all of their child's needs 

o r t o p rov i d e a l l o f t h e 

opportunities they wish their 

child to have. At the extreme, 

these parents feel they can't deal 

with their children anymore. 

They may resort to physical punishment 

and even become 

abusive if they are pushed too far. 

Or they may give up altogether 

and agree too easily to their 

children's demands. 

Although am an advocate of 

being a career woman like every 

other woman would but beg to 

defer with the ideology of single 

parenting; however it does not 

implies that as a result of myriads 

of challenges this class of women 

face would make them a bad 

parent or they are parent to the 

bad ones in the society, but their 

adverse impact on the child(ren) 

can't be totally separated.

FINANCE AS A HINDRANCE TO THE GROWTH OF SMALL AND MEDIUM 

SCALE ENTERPRISE IN NIGERIA

he growth of SMEs in 

Nigeria is paramount as it 

Tis required to bolster 

economic development. SMEs 

contribute up to over eighty 

percent (80%) percent of firms in 

the country. They are equally 

responsible for a substantial 

percentage of the labour force in 

the country. As important as it is to 

economic growth, it is rather 

worrisome that it remained in the 

developing stage because 

financing has remained one of the 

key managerial challenges that 

keeps confronting SMEs in 

Nigeria today. Studies have 

shown that finance (capital) when 

in short supply most times due to 

mis-management greatly affects 

the growth of a business entity. 

Where there is no proper flow of 

fund to run and sustain a business 

entity, it is definitely destined for a 

premature collapse. 

Finance for the purpose of this 


content is the money invested in a 

business entity to start up and 

sustain a business. 

A small and medium scale 

enterprise within the context of 

Nigeria is a business entity whose 

asset base and staff strength fall 

within the range of ?5 million to 

?500 million and 11 to 300 

employees respectively. 

Adequate finance is required to 

run a business organization most 

especially when it is still at the 

infancy stage as a lot is invested in 

development and expansion. 

Study equally showed that a larger 

proportion of SMEs in Nigeria die 

in their first two years of existence. 

What are the sources of finance to 

SMEs and why is access to them 

limited or beyond reach? 

The source of finance can be 

formal or informal. The formal 

means comprise of the financial 

institutions, government agencies 

while the informal are mainly 

through personal savings and 

loans from friends and associates. 

Government in recent times has 

established agencies to fund and 

promote the growth of SMEs in 

Nigeria. However, despite the 

huge amount pumped into these 

agencies with majority of the 

funding coming from international 

agencies such as NEPAD, World 

Bank, little progress has been 

recorded as small business 

enterprise in the country is still 

bemused by high mortality rate 

due to paucity of fund. 

What then are challenges of 

SMEs in accessing finance? 

Records Keeping: The most 

crucial of all the requirements to 

unlimited finance is keeping up to 

date records in respect of 

accounts, plans and targets. 

Availability of these records

shows the level of seriousness 

and how organized a business 

entity is. The first point of call of an 

investor in contact with a business 

entity is the business records 

which will show case business 

plans and activity and the working 

capital required to sustain the 

business. But it is rather 

unfortunate that when small 

business owners approach micro 

finance institutions or credit loan 

schemes for financial assistance, 

records presented are either 

outdated, incomplete or invalid. 

They are definitely denied access 

as there are no clear cut 

investment and pay back plans.

Economic conditions: The 

global economic meltdown effect 

spread across every aspect of the 

economy. SMEs were equally 

affected as there was a drastic 

reduction in the amount of funds 

available for SMEs finance and 

growth in Nigeria as the country 

battle to finance her budget deficit 

due to huge debt incurred trying to 

misappropriation on the part of 

custodians of these funds has led 

to decline in the level of trust donor 

government/agencies had in 

them. This forced government to 

hold on to or divert to other areas of 

economic importance funds meant 

for the development of SMEs. 

However, despite the presence of 

these challenges, the government 

still hold it as a point of duty to 

ensure that appropriate machinery 

are put in place to ensure that 

adequate funds are made 

Dangerous Tenants 

Registration: To access funds, it 

is of utmost importance to register 

with the relevant agencies such as 

the corporate affairs commission, 

relevant tax authorities and 

groups or associations with similar 

business interest. This gives them 

more credibility. It is equally 

important to note that when 

government wants to offer 

financial assistance to SMEs, they 

usually go through groups which 

in turn get back members.

Some trending Phones in 2015 

HTC One M8 

ASUS - ZenFone 2 

Asus unveiled its first Android 5.0 Lollipop 

smartphone, the ZenFone 2, at CES 2015. While 

the use of Lollipop, which more upgrades to 

Android than can easily be counted, is pretty 

awesome, Asus has done a stellar job loading the 

ZenFone 2 with a wealth of top end hardware. 

Chief of these are the ZenFone 2's 13MP rear 

camera with an f/2.0 wide-aperture lens, Optical 

Image Stabilsation (OIS) and a 5MP PixelMaster 

front camera. 

PixelMaster is a custom technology designed to 

improve the ZenFone's imaging performance by 

adjusting the pixel size and image-processing 

algorithms to "improve low light performance 

by 400 percent" and "enhance noise reduction 

and colour contrast by up to 200 percent". 

The ZenFone 2 will also feature an upgraded 

camera application that allows the manual 

adjustment of settings like ISO and shutter 

speed. 

The combination of imaging tech and software 

mean the ZenFone 2 may be one of the best 

options for avid photographers come its release 

later this year. 


Taiwanese firm HTC is probably the only 

company in the world that is as focused on 

design as Apple. As a result it's no surprise its 

2014 flagship smartphone, the One M8, is one 

of the best looking and designed 

smartphones currently available. 

Even better, underneath the One M8's robust, 

but elegant metal chassis lies a wealth of top 

end components. HTC's loaded the M8 with a 

high power Snapdragon 801 processor, high 

resolution 5in, 1080x1920, 441ppi, Super 

LCD3 capacitive touchscreen and Duo 

camera technology. 

Duo Camera is a new technology that lets 

One M8's 4.1MP Ultrapixel rear camera 

capture spatial information using a second 

supporting camera sensor. This lets users 

manually adjust the point of focus and create 

a depth-of-field effect on a captured image. 

LG - G Flex 2 

Display technology is an increasingly 

competitive area in the world of smartphones. 

Traditionally companies have worked to 

dominate the space by improving their displays' 

resolution, colour balance and brightness levels. 

LG however has chosen to take a different tactic 

over the last year and has instead been working to 

push its curved display technology to the masses. 

This started in 2012 when LG unveiled the G Flex 

and continued at CES 2015 when the Korean firm 

unveiled its follow up curved smartphone, the G 

Flex 2. 

The G Flex 2's standout feature is its" flexible" 

5.5in, 1080p, OLED display, which according to 

LG is 30 percent more durable and crack proof 

than its predecessor and can absorbs impacts 

when it hits a hard surface. 

Add to this the G Flex 2's octa-core Qualcomm 

Snapdragon 810 processor and Android 5.0 

Lollipop mobile operating system and LG's latest 

handset is on paperone of the most advanced 

smartphones ever seen. 

SONY Xperia 

Sony continued its rapid-release strategy at the 

IFA trade show in Berlin at the start of 

September 2014 when it unveiled its latest 

Xperia Z3 flagship smartphone. 

The firm announced the Z3 a mere six months 

after its predecessor, the Xperia Z2, and while 

it doesn't offer huge improvements Sony has 

made a few important changes. 

For starters the Xperia Z3 is thinner than the 

Xperia Z2 and will run using a more current 

version of Google's Android 4.4 KitKat 

operating system. 

Add to this its stellar 5.2in Full HD screen, 

quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 

processor and 20.7MP rear-facing camera and 

we can't help but be impressed by the Sony 

Xperia Z3

THE WORST COURSE TO STUDY IN HIGHER INSTITUTION

believing in the farce 

Wthat there were some 

subjects of study that were worse 

than being illiterate? Yes! It was 

when I wanted to choose subjects 

for my WAEC class in SS1. That 

was in 1996. My love has always 

been for management courses 

but because I was equally good at 

sciences, my class teacher did 

everything in his powers to cajole 

me into opting for science class 

with subjects like Chemistry, 

Physics, Biology and the likes. 

That would have qualified me for 

the glorified ‘best' courses like 

medicine, pharmacy, engineering, 

etc. 

I have since forgotten the childish 

dichotomy since I got to the 

university until recently when I 

was leafing through a popular 

online social forum. One of the hot 

topics for discussion on a 

particular date was titled 'The 

Worst and the Best Courses'. As 

may be expected, the topic 

generated heated comments 

among the forum members. Lists 

of courses were branded the 'best' 

or the 'worst', depending on the 

inclination of whoever was 

commenting. 

Interesting! At least to kill a boring 

evening. But… 

The truth is: there is no best course 

and neither is there any worst 

course to study in higher 

institution. I have been greatly 

opportune to participate in HR 

matters which include recruitment 

and selection exercises. I won't 

downplay the fact that some 

courses may fetch you bulky 

salaries if and only if you are lucky 

to find yourself at some cozy 

corners but many holders of 

derided courses are doing very 

well as well. 

The Corporate Symbiosis 

In real life, no one course 

superintends over others. 

The best Financial Accounting 

textbook I used in the university 

was written by a holder of first 

d e g r e e i n P e t r o c h e m i c a l 

Engineering. That's just an 

opener. The corporate world out 

there actually thrives on what can 

be called corporate symbiosis. 

One course dovetails into the 

others. That's why you'll find 

graduates of various disciplines in 

b a n k s , i n s u r a n c e , 

telecommunications companies 

and the oil and gas industry.

class international school, 

graduates of 'looked down upon' 

courses like History, Music, 

African Languages, French and 

PE are in high demand. They are 

well paid, more than what many 

bankers get. Yes, I said it and I 

meant it! Teachers now live 

large. Some principals can

heart attacks and other cardiovascular 

symptoms. 

Are we trying to say that there 

are not many graduates of 

Medicine, 

Law or Engineering who 

languish on jobs that barely pay 

their house rents? The issue is 

not about the course. It is about 

o p p o r t u n i t i e s a n d t h e 

repeat, there is nothing like the 

best course or the worst course. 

The only thing you can have is 

your worst self - if you allow 

yourself to be downgraded. 

Everything all comes down to 

who you think you are, what you 

think you can do, and how far you 

believe you can go.

Cancer is a much dreaded word 

to the layman and indeed anyone 

who is sitting in the doctor's 

office having undergone some 

t e s t s o r i n v e s t i g a t i o n s 

beforehand. When the doctor 

starts the conversation with”I am 

sorry, but you have cancer.......” 

how does the patient continue 

from that moment on? 

Before we move on, here are 

some fast figures for you from

kinds of cancers out there, 

cervical cancer is one of the ones 

that can be detected early and 

treated successfully or, even 

prevented altogether. 

Cervical cancer refers to that 

cancer that forms in tissues of 

the cervix (the lower portion of 

the uterus/womb). It is usually a 

slow-growing cancer that may 

not have symptoms but can be 

detected with regular Pap tests 

(a procedure in which cells are 

scraped from the cervix and 

inspected under a microscope). 

Cervical cancer is almost always 

caused by human papilloma 

virus (HPV) infection, which is 

why it may be considered to be 

'contagious'. There are various 

strains of the human papilloma 

v i r u s ( H P V ) , a s e x u a l l y 

transmitted infection, which have 

been implicated in cervical 

cancer. When a woman is 

exposed to infection from HPV, 

her body mounts up a resistance 

against the infection and it passes 

without lasting harm. However in 

some cases, the virus survives for 

years, contributing to the process 

that causes some cells on the 

surface of the cervix to become 

cancer cells. There are two kinds 

of cells in the cervix namely the 

squamous cell and the glandular 

cells. They meet at a point called 

the transformation zone and this 

is where changes start gradually 

therefore giving an opportunity 

for early detection if screening is 

carried out regularly. 

As mentioned earlier, it is usually 

symptomless therefore the key to 

detection is regular screening 

a n d t h i s c a n n o t b e 

overemphasized. In later stages 

when cervical cancer has been 

established there may be 

abnormal vaginal bleeding 

unrelated to menstruation, 

bleeding after contact with the 

cervix e.g. sexual contact or use 

of diaphragm, pain during sex 

and vaginal discharge tinged 

with blood. By the time it gets to 

this stage, it is very important to 

see your doctor for further 

investigations and treatment. 

However, these signs and 

symptoms can also be caused by 

conditions other than cervical 

cancer. For instance an infection 

may also cause pain or bleeding 

and if you have any of these signs 

or other suspicious symptoms, 

you should immediately see your 

doctor. Ignoring symptoms may 

allow the cancer to progress to a 

more advanced stage thereby 

lowering your chance for 

effective treatment. Even better, 

don't wait for symptoms to 

appear. Have regular Pap tests 

chemotherapy and these are 

u s u a l l y c a r r i e d o u t i n 

combinations. As more work is 

done with treatment, newer 

therapies are emerging. One 

such approach is Targeted 

Therapy which focuses on 

blocking aspects of growth of the 

cancer cells. For instance some 

new drugs block the blood 

supply to the cancerous cells 

thereby starving the cells to 

death. 

After treatment ends, your 

doctors will still want to watch 

you closely. A f ollow-up 

schedule can be expected. It is 

very important to go to all of your 

follow-up appointments. During 

these visits, questions about any 

problems that arise can be 

addressed. Lab tests, x-rays or 

other imaging tests may also be 

done look for signs of spread of 

cancer and long term effects of 

treatment.

to raise awareness of the various 

ways we can prevent the disease. 

Regular screening through pap 

smears will greatly reduce the 

number of women who progress to 

full blown cervical cancer due to 

early detection and treatment. 

The HPV vaccine is also an important 

preventive method, off er ing 

protection against the more 

commonly implicated types of the 

virus. It is especially useful preexposure 

to sexual activity but can 

also be given to women who do not 

currently have the virus or display 

changes in the cervix following pap 

smears. 

Finally, HPV is spread through sexual 

contact so the safest way to prevent 

infection is not to have sexual 

contact. Use of barrier protection 

(condoms etc) during sexual 

intercourse may also reduce the rate 

of infection.

she told me that I was wasting my talent while others were making money doing what I was doing for 

free. Her words struck me and that was it. 

How do you think your style of luxury casuals can breed self confidence among your audience 

especially career people? 

Yes, it can because luxury wears make you feel really confident. You don't necessarily have to wear 

something very expensive as long as you are fashionable, so when you know how to combine the 

right colours, matched up with the right accessories you can always be self-confident 

What are the challenges of running a fashion store in Nigeria? 

Well, in terms of the word fashion, it has not been widely accepted as it is in some parts of Europe 

and the US where everything can be seen or taken as fashion. Competition is another challenge 

but in all, there is nothing that you will do in life without a challenge. 

Do you have affiliations with other cloth lines inside and outside the country and how do you rate the 

fashion and style industry in Nigeria? 

At the moment, no. As for the fashion and style industry we are really improving compared to a few 

yeas back.

Its not all about working had but working smart.

odyssey. For 16 years, the People's 

Democratic Party, PDP, held sway, 

clutching an iron grip on the 

gover n ance o f Niger ia and 

promising, in the words of a former 

party chairman, to do so for the next 

60 years. At one time, it appeared no 

empty boast as the party looked 

deeply entrenched, tentacles 

spread like a colossus, holding both 

knife and yam. 

Truth be told, most Nigerians would 

have prior to now, snickered in 

derisive dismissal at suggestions of 

a successful change in status-quo. It 

has never quite been an African 

t h i n g t o u n s e a t i n c u m b e n t 

governments;not for lack of citizen 

desire, but because African leaders 

are wont to interpret one 'electoral 

victory' as a divine mandate to 

transform democracy into a pseudomonarchy. 

So, we have a continent 

littered with sit-tight despots who 

are ready to contend with all 

elements of naturejust to retain the 

keys to the wealth of their 

subjugated nations. But I digress. 

Nigeria is the focus here. Against all 

p e r m u t a t i o n s a n d w e s t e r n 

projections, we have successfully 

navigated a landmine election 

where an incumbent president (and 

his ruling party), have been 

defeated,haveconceded defeat, and 

plans for a smooth transit are in top 

gear.Yes, the seemingly impossible 

has happened. The opposition 

finally have a shot at power. They 

have a chance to prove they are the 

solution to Nigeria's enduring 

d i l e m m a o f u n d e r wh e l m i n g 

governance. There is a high 

expectation that the sleeping giant 

will finally be roused from over half a 

century of stagnating slumber. 

Yes, 'SaiBuhari' is here! CHANGE is 

here! But, while the delirioustapdancing 

and fist-bumping echoes of 

'CHANGE' continue to rend the air, 

just oneinnocuous question: How 

many truly understand the farreaching 

demands of this change? 

It is notunusual to hear Nigerians 

b l a m e t h a t e n t i t y c a l l e d 

'government'for every single of their 

personal woes. Fromthe high cost of 

living to the fetid smell of their farts, 

government is guiltyof it all. So, 

when we scream 'CHANGE', there

isthis picture of baban-riga wearing 

'Abuja people' in our heads. They are 

the Neanderthals who must be 

transformed into the saints that we 

are. Meanwhile, the person thinking 

this owes a backlog of taxes. The 

same personwould gladly join a 

protest against the trial of a corrupt 

person, placard reading: “STOP 

VICTIMIZING OUR BROTHER. STOP 

atourbig-men rogues. 

Well, maybe Buhari needs to do all 

that, but lest we forget, a peopleget 

the kind of leadership they deserve. 

We have thus far deserved the kind of 

leadership we have experienced. 

And by implication, perhaps, with the 

results of the just concluded polls, we 

have made the bold statement of a

Desmond: 

Thank you for this opportunity. I 

feel honoured too. My name is 

Desmond Olusola Elliot. I am 

from Olowogbowo area of Lagos 

State. But grew up in Surulere. I 

was born in the 70’s. I had most of 

my educational background in 

Jos and concluded my University 

education at Lagos State 

University where I studied 

Economics. I’m presently having 

a master degree at the National 

Open University of Nigeria. I 

have been an actor for about 15 

years and by the grace of God in 

Nollywood Nigeria and Africa, I 

have gotten to a level where I can 

produce and distribute my films. 


What prompted your choice of 

career? Did you always known you 

will end up a celebrity? 

Desmond: 

No firstly its my faith. I believe 

strongly in God everything in life 

is a ordination from God. It's a 

belief that has guided me. I have 

never planned 5 years of my life 

instead I have hoped to become 

something in the next 5 years of 

my life. Once it is placed in my 

heart like a directive from God, I 

move. If I thought I was going to 

be an actor? It's a No. I have 

always loved politics and 

modeling acting has been like a 

hubby. You don’t have to have all 

the qualifications to be the 

chosen one just be at the right 

place at the right time. The 

appointed time is the God factor. 


Throughout your work life, who 

has been your most outstanding 

mentor(s) and how have they 

imparted in your life. 

Desmond: 

Once upon a time, in Unijos and 

when I was in the IPMAN, I met 

Richard Mofe Damijo. It was a 

high moment for me, he noticed 

my focus and seriousness. We 

struck a bond and he became 

one of my inventors. When I 

started directing and producing, 

I had Mr. Lancelot Imasuen too as 

a mentor. 


H ow d o yo u b a l a n c e t h e 

competing demand of work and 

family life and what is it like living 

in Desmond’s world? 

Desmond: 

Its ne of the most difficult you 

have to balance family and work. 

You have to show love to your wife 

and kinds, understand them and 

they understand you. You have to 

explain to them sometimes why 

you have to be away for 

sometime to work and make sure 

they understand. 


Your track record of achievements 

are impressive and speak for 

themselves. But what is the major 

milestone you have achieved in 

your career till date? 

Desmond: 

To everyone there is a reason for 

where you are. Everyone has a 

reason and a purpose. I always 

remember what I was told by one 

of my mentors, that Godliness 

with contentment is great gain. I 

have even looked beyond that 

m o s t o f u s e n t e r t a i n e r s 

sometimes forget who we are and 

where we are coming from 

because the whole life comes as 

a surprise to us. I love money 

because it makes thing happen 

but I am not money crazy. My 

biggest milestone is to make 

people happy when they are 

down. 



There is a trend at the moment in 

which celebrities are going into 

politics, what area of governance 

appeals you and what impact do 

you intend to make? 

Desmond: 

We have had a lot of dialogue and 

discussions with a lot of 

politicians and the people in the 

grassroots. We are like a link. We 

speak from a triple point of view. 

So we understand the yearnings 

and aspirations of the people. I 

have also had the ambition for 

along time to be in politics. The 

point is to try and create relevant. 

The world is changing and in 

Nigeria, we should not be talking 

about roads, power etc. We 

should be talking about creation 

of jobs, empowering people and 

Smes. We all need to enjoy the 

dividends of Democracy. I see 

myself as some that has a 

responsibility and if me and the 

people in my cadre don't do well, 

it will ruin the chances of the 

youths coming up. The youths 

have to be interested in politics 

and the situation of our country 

because it will decided how we 

will tend in future. 


What are your hobbies? 

Desmond: 

I love playing scrabble, traveling 

and seeing places. I hope to start 

playing football and squash in 

future 


What’s your favorite movie of all 

time? 

Desmond: 

I would say ‘Behind closed doors’ 

reasons because of the people in 

the cast who were my mentors 

and personal friends. It was like 

the peak of my career 


You are now a veteran in our 

country’s entertainment industry. 

How would you assess the rate of 

development and the support of 

the government and the private 

sector. 

Desmond: 

It's a shaky situation because of a 

lack of structure. One of the 

greatest works of the Babatunde 

Fashola has been to create some 

form of structure that has a 

foundation in which after him 

there will be guaranteed 

continuity. Without structure we 

cant plan and make forecasts. I 

hope to continue to help in build a 

structure for Nollywood across 

Nigeria and Africa. I believe we 

will have a good growth of the 

industry if we have favourable 

govt. Policies. The entertainment 

industry is one that has grown a 

lot of people in minds and in jobs. 

We must protect it. 


Any message for your fans? 

Desmond: 

Make sure you have dreams and 

aspirations and work towards 

them, remember not to take 

anything for granted and expect 

the unexpected. I wish all my fans 

the best and I wish the best for 

this country Nigeria because we 

will get there.

have been married for almost 3 

years and I have no children. I do 

Inot rejoice in this nor do I expect 

that you to feel sorry for me. It is 

what it is. 

I am proud enough to want to see 

replicas of myself and stroll the 

pavement with mini-me's. A girl that 

will have a face that is a mix of mine 

and my husband's fine face, his eyes, 

his hairline, my hair and definitely 

my nose (his nose won't do, I 

consider it big) but she is yet to 

come. 

Many friends that got married after 

me, have had their babies, I rejoice 

with them, two of such babies are 

the firstborns in my heart, that is 

how much I love them and their 

yumminess. 

And in our society, everyone is 

asking questions, people give me 

the side eye, some that love me ask 

out-rightly, some others try very 

hard not to mention it or have 

conversations that have to do with 

children. I can hear some church 

folk ''think-clap their hands in the 

yahoo way or snap fingers'' that ''she 

must be paying for some sin'' and 

some other people just want to run 

their mouths. Some friends hide 

their pregnancies and refuse to tell 

me about it for reasons best known 

to them. Again, some of my friends 

talk to me about their children and I 

am excited that they honour me with 

those conversations. But it is what it 

is. 

But now what? 

Having a child is very important. It is 

what guarantees the continuity of 

the human race and specifically the 

continuity of your values and 

heritage. 

But while I wait... 

...I will be the best woman I can be. I 

will panel beat myself into the kind 

of woman that I can be proud of. 

...I will get moving on every dream I 

ever had, I will learn, start 

businesses, go back to school, 

become the noble woman I know I 

can be. 

...I will extend my circle of influence, 

I will do everything in my power to 

make my nation and the world better 

for when my mini-me gets here. 

...I will learn patience, longsuffering 

and kindness 

...I will NOT worry. Nope. It won't 

change anything. I believe in God 

and in the bible. There is His promise 

and it is my Faith. 

...I will be a support to every woman 

who is feeling despondent because 

she hasn't carried her child or hasn't

INTRODUCTION 

kenya's landscapes are rich in 

diversity. Almost every known 

landform exists within this world in

mountain and glaciers to arid 

deserts, from dry savannah to lush

The Great Rift Valley, its floor 

littered with lakes and extinct

CULTURE 

The people of Kenya are known for 

being extremely polite and helpful. 

It is not uncommon to hear “Jambo!” 

or “Hakuna matata” which mean

Shaking hands is the most common 

form of greeting and is almost 

always followed by asking about 

the health, the family or business of 

the other person. It is considered 

very poor manners to rush or skip 

this. It is also considered rude to

Swahili (or Kiswahili) is the

The majority of the population in 

Kenya are Christians, however,

FOOD AND DRINKS 

It is hard to describe cuisine in 

Kenya as being truly “Kenyan” as 

each region has its own indigenous 

menus. Communities within Kenya 

have different menus that reflect 

t h e d i f f e re n t re g i o n s a n d 

livelihoods. Despite this, some 

dishes made in Kenya reflect 

Indian, Arab and European 

influences. Swahili dishes tend to 

use a combination of ginger, chili, 

coconut, cream, lime and crushed 

tamarind seeds. The people of 

Kenya like to use locally sourced 

ingredients and tend to barbecue 

meat, especially beef and goat

Drinks 

Coffee and tea are of excellent 

quality in Kenya due to the ideal 

growing climate. Kenyan coffee is 

world-renowned and is one of the

tropical fruits like mangoes,

Tipping is optional, however, most 

hotels and restaurants include a

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS 

LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL 

PARK 

Situated between Lakes Naivasha 

and Baringo, beneath the high 

cliffs of the Eastern Rift, lies Lake 

Nakuru. This is a shallow soda lake 

surrounded by yellow-barked 

acacia woodland and grasslands, 

rocky cliffs and hillsides covered 

with the unusual giant Euphorbia 

trees. 

Lake Nakuru is world famous as 

the home of myriad flocks of 

greater and lesser flamingoes 

which frequently form a stunning 

pink ribbon along the edges of the 

l a k e . B u t f l a m i n g o e s a re 

unpredictable and are not always 

found here in such vast numbers - 

they migrate up and down the Rift 

Valley from Natron to Turkana in 

search of the best food supply. An 

entertaining spectacle is the large 

flocks of pelicans found fishing and 

washing at the southern end of the 

Lake. Over 400 species of birdlife 

have been recorded at the lake, 


making this yet another of Kenya's 

major ornithological sites. 

In addition to the birdlife, the park is 

home to herds of buffalo, waterbuck, 

impala, Rothschild giraffe, and 

leopard. A defined area of the park 

has now been designated a rhino 

sanctuary. Other tourist attractions 

are: The Aberdares, Amboseli 

National Park, Masai Mara National 

Reserve, Wildebeest Migration, Kigio 

Wildlife Conservancy, Samburu & 

Buffalo Springs National Reserves, 

The Glorious Coast 

WEATHER 

Kenya is generally a dry country; over 

75% of its area is classed as arid or 

semi-arid with only around 20% 

being viable for agriculture. Inland, 

rainfall and temperatures are closely 

related to altitude changes, with 

var iations induced by local 

topography. Generally the climate is 

warm and humid at the coast, cool 

and humid in the central highlands, 

and hot and dry in the north and in the 

east. 

Across most of the country, rainfall is 

strongly seasonal, although its 

pattern, timing and extent vary 

greatly from place to place and from 

year to year. The relatively wet 

coastal belt along the Indian Ocean 

receives 1,000 mm (39.37 in) or more 

rain per year. Most rain falls from 

April to July as a result of the 

southeasterly monsoon. In much of 

the central highlands, the rainy 

seasons are March to June and 

November to January. 

TRAVEL TIPS, VISAS AND HEALTH 

When visiting Kenya, casual, 

lightweight and comfortable clothing 

is recommended, so too are strong, 

comfortable walking shoes. If 

travelling to the highlands, a sweater 

or jacket may be required - this is also 

true for evenings. When partaking in 

safaris or game viewing, clothing 

should always be neutral in colour to 

blend in with natural surroundings. 

As such, white or vividly patterned 

clothing should be avoided. 

Sunscreen with strong SPFs should be 

brought from home along with 

wide-brimmed hats which provide 

good protection against the sun. In 

certain areas, mainly by the coast, it 

is considered inappropriate to 

wear more revealing clothing like 

shorts, tank tops and short sleeved 

tops. 

It is important to remember that 

there isn't always much space for 

luggage on safaris so one should 

pack accordingly. 

Passports 

A passport is the only reliable and 

universally accepted identification 

document, and it proves that you 

have a right to return to your 

country. You are strongly advised to 

always carry a valid passport when 

t r a v e l l i n g t o a n y f o re i g n 

destination. Crossing international 

borders can be complicated and 

sometimes requires many different 

kinds of documents. Being 

prepared is the key to easing your 

way through this process, so make 

sure you know what documents you 

need, where to get them, and which 

ones will make your crossing quick

AN OVERVIEW OF THE ORIGIN OF OHAFIA WAR DANCE

dictionary is the handing 

Tdown of statements, beliefs, 

legends, customs, information, 

e t c . , f ro m g e n e r a t i o n t o 

generation, especially by word of 

mouth or by practice. It can also 

be refined by saying that a 

tradition is a belief or a behaviour 

that is bequeathed down a group 

or a society which is also 

accompanied with a symbolic 

meaning or special significance 

with origins in the past. Belief on 

the other hand is having faith that 

something that doesn't exist is 

real. 

This article is to x-ray the inter 

connectivity of tradition and the 

beliefs of diverse cultures which 

has persisted and evolved for 

many years. Many traditions and 

beliefs especially in Africa, have 

ancient meanings. However some 

have been deliberately invented 

to put a face to a movement which 

might have a political undertone 

or a cultural undertone. Such 

traditions might not last. The 

influence of tradition and beliefs 

is evident in many aspects of daily 

life especially as Africans. 

In Nigeria for example, each 

culture has a tradition and a belief 

that is distinct to the other. 

While an Ijaw man believes that 

Egbesu protects him from harm 

and danger an Igbo man might 

believe that sacrifices to ancestors 

or spirits can protect him from 

harm and while others might 

believe in the protective power of 

charms or amulets, shrines and 

other sacred objects. 

With the influx of religions like 

Islam and Christianity especially 

to the African setting, a lot of 

beliefs and traditions have been 

jettisoned but still, Side by side 

w i t h t h e i r h i g h l eve l s o f 

commitment to Christianity and 

Islam, many people still retain 

beliefs and rituals that are 

characteristic of traditional 

African religions which include 

sacrifices to idols or ancestors, 

annual traditional festivals like the 

Ogun festival in the south west of 

Nigeria, the New yam festival in 

the South east of Nigeria, the 

Argungu Festival in the Middle 

belt etc. 

Also worthy of note is the 

traditional believe of consulting 

native doctors when one is sick 

which has been an age-long 

practice by people who hold 

strongly to such beliefs. Such 

practices asides been an age long 

practice laid down from one 

generation to another generation 

could be also motivated by 

economic reasons or the absence 

of orthodox health care systems in 

such places. 

Also evident in some aspects of 

traditional daily life is the belief of 

re-incarnation by some people, a 

situation where a dead person 

comes back to life or the 

conviction that people will be 

reborn in this world again. Also 

worthy of note is the traditional 

belief that witches or sorcerers 

cause illness or other harms by 

attacking their life- force. They 

seek to protect themselves with 

r itual acts and traditional 

medicines. 

Ancestors, are believed to be part 

of the human community though 

they are in the spirit world. 

Believers hold that ancestors 

sometimes act as messengers 

between living beings and the 



divine, helping to maintain social 

order and withdrawing their 

support if the living behave 

wrongly such wrong doings might 

result in hardship, suffering and 

illness for people or communities 

and must be countered with ritual 

acts to re-establish order and 

well-being. 

In conclusion, despite beliefs in a 

supreme being who created and 

ordered the world but is often 

experienced as distant or 

unavailable to humans. Many 

traditions believe in lesser 

divinities or spirits who. They 

believe are more accessible and 

are sometimes believed to act as 

intermediaries. A number of 

traditional myths explain the 

creation and ordering of the world 

and provide explanations for 

c o n t e m p o r a r y s o c i a l 

relationships and norms. In this 

current article, we will be 

exploring traditions and beliefs of 

t h e O h a f i a p e o p l e w i t h 

preference to the origin of the 

Ohafia War Dance. 

Ohafia is a town and a local 

government area in Abia State, 

Nigeria. It is an Igbo speaking 

region. The ancestral capital of 

Ohafia is located in the village of 

Elu. The Ohafia Local Government 

Area also includes the towns of 

Abiriba and Nkporo. 

Historcally, Ohafia people left 

Andoli and settled in Isi-Eke, from 

where they ran away one night, 

when they heard the rattling 

sound of calabashes. The sound 

was interpreted to mean that they 

were being invaded which lead to 

a commotion, as some of them 

escaped toward Ngodo and 

others went towards Isuochi. At 

one point, some of them headed 

towards Abam leading the group 

heading to Abam, was a man 

known as Ezeama Atita, and two 

sons called Uduma Ezeama and 

Onyereobi Ezeama. When they 

got to Abam, Onyereobi's wife, 

who was heavy with pregnancy, 

could no longer walk. He, 

therefore, remained in Abam with 

his pregnant wife, while the group 

continued on the journey. In the 

present location of Ohafia, at a 

place called Ugwumgbo, Ezeama 

Atita, and his second son, Uduma, 

settled. After many years, their 

offspring established the 26 

villages that make up today's 

O h a f i a . T h e a n c e s t r a l 

headquarters of Ohafia is in Elu 

Ohafia. Each village is governed 

by an eze ogo. All the eze ogo's 

come together to form the Eze 

Ogo-in-Council, which, with the 

amala, decide how the community 

is to be governed. The overall 

traditional ruler, Udumeze, who 

lives in Elu Ohafia, intervenes only 

when there is a matter between an 

eze ogo and a subject. 

THE HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF 

WAR DANCE 

In the past, the culture of Ohafia 

was hinged around one's prowess 

in war. They were constantly on the 

lookout for wars in which to take 

part. They became something like 

mercenaries and the people of 

Arochukwu, who were all over 

Igboland 'hunting' for slaves, 

harnessed this warlike spirit in 

Ohafia people to their own 

advantage. 

The ancestors of the Ohafia 

people were renowned as mighty 

warriors. This aspect of the Ohafia 

p e o p l e s h i s t o r y re m a i n s 

fundamental to the Ohafia 

people's sense of identity. The 

warrior's cap or "leopard cap" 

(Igbo: Okpu agu)is well known 

and is an associated product of 

Ohafia. 

The Ohafia warrior tradition is 

embodied in the performance of 

iri agha The practise of beheading 

a fallen foe was a favourite 

pastime. A human skull was valued 

as a souvenir, and it was a proof of a 

man's courage, which brought to 

the Ohafia man different types of 

honour. Only those who brought 

home a human head could join the 

Ogbu-Isi society and wear the 

eagle plume of courage. The love 

of military glory became a 

consuming passion and the focus 

of all social values.

HOW TO DRINK WATER 

s ridiculous as this topic seems, not everybody 

knows how to drink water at least for health 

Apurposes. How and when we drink water can 

be so trivialized these days and its results are apparent 

from the great number of people I see daily. Drinking 

water can be likened to common sense; they are not 

common. Let me digress a bit, ever since I was a child, I 

have seen the sun rise and fall at the same times and 

the seasons of the year come and go at relatively the 

same times. 

I realized that we needed to wake and sleep, sow and 

reap alongside these patterns to reap greater health 

and the Earth's abundance respectively. I also 

reasoned that since our body is a creature of an orderly 

creator (GOD), it has its natural processes; if we adhere 

to its processes we will reap immense health. 

I recall in my previous article (cross news: 239); I 

mentioned some tips on how best to drink water to 

obtain maximum health benefits. However, I never 

mentioned how much was adequate for an individual. 

Everybody has a special water requirement which is 

determined by a couple of factors some of which are;

lose about 2 liters of water daily in 

basal metabolic activities such as 

sweating (skin), urine (kidney), and 

breathing (lungs), solid body waste 

(bowels). If the balance is distorted 

the body malfunctions, disease 

conditions arise and in severe cases 

of dehydration death can occur. 

WHEN DRINKING WATER IS A 

BORE 

For some, drinking water is

add drops of honey or lemon or 

whatever tastes nice to you(just a 

few drops) to make it pleasant,

glass then, two glasses and 

continue until you attain your goal.

Many foods contain a substantial 


amount of water in them. Beverages 

like milk, natural fruit juices, and 

herbal infusions. Hence, taking a 

glass of milk or natural juice can count 

for a half of your 75 cl. You could make

ACHIEVED! Alcoholic beverages do 

not count! They are even dehydrating. 

In fact, you should take a glass of 

water for any glass of alcohol you 

drink. A significant amount of water 

can also be obtained from nonstarchy 

vegetables e.g. spinach, 

lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, water 

melons etc. 

Lastly, not all waters are created the 

same. You should obtain water as pure 

as you can; it will be of no use to drink 

water which is dirtier than the body 

you intend to clean or refresh. This will 

only lead to disease. If you cannot 

afford bottled water, purify your tap, 

well water or whatever sources of 

water you can assess. Boiling water is 

a good means of purifying water but 

the resultant concentration of 

minerals is a major concern for me. 

Bottled or sachet water are okay but I 

get a bit skeptical about the plastic 

container especially when it's been 

stored for long. The best option is to 

obtain a water filter this way you can 

have organic matters filtered out and 

good minerals retained.

1 kg Palm Fruits or 800g tinned Palm 

Fruit Concentrate 

Beef 

Dry Fish 

Vegetable: Scent Leaves for Ofe 

Akwu or dried and crushed bitter 

leaves for Delta-style Banga Soup 

2 medium onions 

A handful crayfish or 2 tablespoons 

of ground Crayfish 

Salt and Chilli Pepper (to taste) 

Ogiri Okpei (Iru) 

1-2 big stock cubes 

Before you cook the Nigerian Banga 

Soup 

COOKING DIRECTIONS 

Extract the palm fruit concentrate 

from the palm fruits or open the tin 

and set aside. 

Cook the beef and the dry fish with 1 

bulb of diced onion and the stock 

cubes till done. 

Wash and cut the scent leaves into 

tiny pieces 

Cut the remaining bulb of onion. 

Pound the crayfish, ogiri and pepper 

in a mortar and set aside. 

Set the pot of palm fruit extract on 

the stove and start cooking at high 

heat. Leave to boil till you notice 

come red oil at the surface of the 

Banga Stew. If you think that the 

Banga Soup is watery, cook till the 

soup has thickened to the 

consistency you like for your stews. 

Now, add the beef and fish are well 

done, the palm fruit concentrate and 

add water to get the consistency you 

like for your stews. Leave to boil very 

well. 

Add the onions, crayfish, pepper and 

ogiri blend and let it boil very well. 

Add the scent leaves or other 

vegetable and salt to taste. Leave to 

simmer for about 2 mins. The Banga 

Soup is done.

TV and on other TV and online platforms. 

Nollywood has made Nigeria the second 

largest producer of movies by numbers 

after India's Bollywood and is now 

estimated to be worth over NG?853.9 

billion (US$5.1 billion) as at 2014 and 

actually boosted the rebased Gross 

Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria to 

make the country Africa's largest 

economy under “Motion pictures, sound 

recording and music production,” with a 

huge increase of N9 trillion in size. 

Analysts stated Nollywood made about 

N1.72 trillion in 2013. 

“Living in Bondage” Igbo language 

movie directed by Chris Obi Rapu, 

written by Kenneth Nnebue and 

Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, aka "Paulo" for 

Kenneth Nnebue's NEK Video Links in 

1992 has become synonymous with the 

beginning of Nollywood, but the fact is 

Nnebue actually produced 40 home 

videos in Yorùbá language before 

making his first Igbo language movie. 

But the first Nigerian home video is 

“Ekun” in 1984 by the late Muyideen 

Alade Aromire, a popular Yoruba actor, 

filmmaker and founder of Yotomi TV, who 

studied TV and film production in 

Cologne, Germany. The video in VHS 

format was made before Kenneth 

Nnebue's first Yorùbá home video “Aje 

Ni'ya Mi” in 1989. Today, Nollywood, 


including Kannywood of the booming 

Hausa genre is attracting movie buffs, 

film students and film scholars and also 

investors. 

Nollywood started the revolution in 

digital film making in Africa from the 

days of straight-to-video productions 

using analog video like Betacam SP and 

JVC camcorders that video camera 

operators cradled and also carried like 

their babies on shoulders from one 

location to another. 

Nollywood was a child of circumstance 

born out of the necessity of never-say-die 

Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa filmmakers and 

marketers who had to develop new film 

distribution channels and platforms for 

their movies when the cinemas collapsed 

due to the high costs of producing films 

on celluloid. The high costs were caused 

by the Structural Adjustment Programme 

of former head of state of Nigeria, 

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda in 

the late 1980s. 

“Then, we used to shoot on celluloid. For 

celluloid, post production can't be done 

here, it is taken abroad. Most filmmakers 

could not do that, so we had to resort to 

making films in video format. We 

screened them at cinemas by using video 

projectors,” recalled veteran Nollywood 

star and producer Prince Jide Kosoko. 

Nollywood attracted many Igbo 

electronics traders in Lagos and Onitsha 

who invested hundreds of thousands of 

naira on making movies as fast as 

possible for quick Return On Investment 

(ROI) and this Nollywood the first 

guerrilla film making industry in Africa . 

They imported containers of Video 

Home System (VHS) cassettes and video 

cassette recorders (VCR) for recording 

and playing video cassettes sold in their 

electronics stores and hawked on the 

streets from Idumota in Lagos to Upper 

Iweka in Onitsha Market of Anambra 

state . Nollywood also attracted the 

starry-eyed Nigerian youths who have 

been dreaming of becoming TV and 

movie stars, including graduates of 

theater arts and English from the 

universities, such as Ibinabo Fiberesima, 

first female President of the Actors Guild 

of Nigeria (AGN), Hilda Dokubo, Rita 

Dominic, Ejike Asegbu, Juliet Ibe, Yibo 

Koko, Sam Dede, Charles Okafor, 

Lancelot Imasuen, Basorge Tariah Jnr, 

Clem Ohaneze, Victor Osuagwu, Bob- 

Manuel Udokwu, Mike Ogbolosingha, 

Julius Agwu, Francis Duru, Monalisa 

Chinda, Thelma Okoduwu, and Patrick 

Otor from University of Port Harcourt and 

Fred Amata, Jim Iyke, Ali Nuhu and 

others from University of Jos. Nollywood 

has also produced two dynasties of 

notable filmmakers, the Ejiros and 

Amatas. While Chico Ejiro mentored by 

his elder brother Zeb Ejiro is the most 

prolific producer of home videos, Jeta 

Amata is the shining star of the Amata 

dynasty, making movies both on 

celluloid and digital cinema format and 

one of the few internationally acclaimed 

young filmmakers in Nigeria. 

From Analog videos of the late 1980s and 

1990s, Nollywood has evolved into the

leading African digital cinema industry 

with the filmmakers using the latest 

digital cinema technologies for film 

production. The most popular digital 

cinema cameras in Nollywood are Red, 

Sony and BlackMagic. And many of the 

movies have won local and international 

awards made by the most ambitious 

filmmakers. The most notable movies

Nollywood/Hollywood films such as 

“Amazing Grace” of 2006 based on true 

life story of British slave trader John 

Newton's voyage to West Africa and the 

critical events that inspired him to write 

the world's most popular hymn, Amazing

West African Film Award in the 2006 

Screen Nations Awards, UK and Amata's 

“Black November” was among the top 

Nigerian films in 2012; Nollywood diva 

Stephanie Okereke's “Through the 

Glass”, 2009, was also a fantastic 

romantic comedy with an international 

cast;. Lonzo Nzekwe's “Anchor Baby” 

won the Best Film prize at the 2010 

Harlem International Film Festival in 

New York; Chineze Anyaene's “Ijé, the 

Journey” of 2010 also boosted the profile 

of Nollywood internationally with official 

selection in 18 international film festivals 

and winning five major awards, 

including a coveted award for Best 

Picture and another one for Excellence 

in film making; Mahmood Ali-Balogun's 

“Tango with Me” of 2010 is also worth 

commending. Other outstanding films 

include Michelle Bello's multiple award 

winning first feature film, “Small Boy” of 

2007; Chike Ibekwe's first feature 

“Eternal” of 2009 shared the Golden 

Screen prize for the best film award with 

“An Unusual Woman” by Burkinabe 

director Abdoulaye Dao at the 14th 

annual “Ecrans noirs” Film Festival in 

Yaounde (Cameroon) and has been 

screened at other international film 

festivals; Obi Emelonye has made the 

outstanding movies “Mirror Boy”, “Last 

Flight to Abuja” and “Onye Ozi”; Teco 

Benson, Izu Ojukwu, Kunle Afolayan, 

Lancelot Imasuen, Chico Ejiro, Emem 

Isong, Tade Ogidan, Funke Akindele and 

others have also made good movies. 

Film awards have also boosted the 

progress and success of Nollywood as 

the filmmakers, actors, actresses and 

others compete to win coveted prizes at 

the Africa Movie Academy Awards 

(AMAA), Best of Nollywood Awards, 

AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards 

(AMVCAs and others. 

The Film schools such as the National 

Film Institute in Jos run by the Nigerian 

Film Corporation (NFC) has produced 

international award winning filmmakers 

like Mak Kusare and Kenneth Gyang, 

Emem Isong's Royal Arts Academy and 


Del-York Creative Academy are among 

the leading film schools in Nollywood. 

The late Amaka Igwe, the amazon of 

Nollywood's studios and Best of the Best 

African Film and Television Programmes 

(BOB TV) market have been contributing 

so much to the sustainable development 

of Nollywood. The film schools have 

boosted the capacity development of the 

Nigerian film industry with the graduates 

increasing the numbers of professional 

practitioners in Nollywood who will be 

making more movies in all genres. 

The next ten years will be the most 

dynamic years of Nollywood, because of 

the emergence of the most ambitious 

movies already being made like Lancelot 

Imasuen's epic “Invasion 1897”, Kunle 

Afolayan's “October 1”, Izu Ojukwu's “76” 

and Dapo Adeniyi's “Ake”, from Nobel 

Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka's memoir 

“Ake: The Years of Childhood”. And more 

will come with the increase in the number 

of screens by the leading cinema chains 

of Silverbird Cinemas, Genesis Deluxe 

Cinemas, Film House Cinemas and new 

ones to increase the local film 

distribution of Nollywood movies. Local 

and international film festivals will also 

increase the appreciation of Nollywood 

and among the leading film festivals are 

the biennial Zuma Film Festival, annual 

Abuja International Film Festival, African 

International Film Festival (AFRIFF), Eko 

International Film Festival (EKOIFF), iRep 

International Documentary Film Forum 

and In-Short Film Festival. There are also 

revival of outdoor cinemas with the 

launching of the Screen Naija One 

Village, One Cinema Project cosponsored 

by the Bank of Industry and 

other similar initiatives. 

The $200 million Entertainment 

Intervention Fund of the Federal 

Government of Nigeria through the Bank 

of Industry (BOI) and Nigerian Export 

Import Bank (NEXIM) and the Project 

ACT-Nollywood with a budget of N3 

billion have been launched with 

successful production of two major films;

Funds will also be given for new cinemas. 

The popularity of digital film distribution 

with successful mobile applications and 

platforms such as Iroko TV, Afrinolly, 

Dobox TV and others in the biggest and 

largest mobile telecoms market in Africa 

will increase the mileage and patronage 

of Nollywood with over 125 million users 

of GSM phones and Tablets and over 67 

million users of the internet in Nigeria, 

the most populous country in the 

continent. 

Without the news media, Nollywood 

would not have become so popular, 

because the local and international news 

media channels have been promoting the 

appreciation of Nollywood movies and 

Nollywood stars since “Living in 

Bondage” to date. If the newspapers, TV 

channels, blogs and other news and 

information platforms did not report new 

movies with highlights of their producers 

and stars, none of them would have been 

celebrated in Nigeria and abroad. 

Therefore, the success of Nollywood has 

been boosted by publicity from the first 

home video 'Ekun” to the most expensive 

Nigerian film “Half of a Yellow Sun”. In fact, 

the more publicity you give a movie, the 

more public attention and reception it will 

get. But many Nollywood movies have 

flopped, because of poor publicity and 

the lack of appreciation of the social 

media by the filmmakers and film 

distributors who have not been 

maximizing the benefits of the popular 

social media platforms on the internet. 

The future of Nollywood will be dictated 

by the popularity of digital media for 

digital filmmaking and digital film 

distribution and anyone who is not digital 

compliant in Nollywood will be left 

behind.
