Honor Class of 196050th AnniversaryBy Sandy Hedrick Robbinst was a time before Wii’s, IPODs, and MP3’s. WeIdidn’t have cars that talked to us or phones that wetook pictures with! When we read a book, it wasby holding it in our hands and turning the pages, not by touching an electronic gadget. Texting was somethingthat meant reading a school text book. We actually had totake a course to learn how to type – now our grandkidscan do it on their own PCs starting at age 3! Playing meantputting on “old” clothes and going outside, not sitting infront of a TV with a remote in our hands making littleobjects move around on the screen. As we approach this milestone in our lives, it seems thatmore often we look back fondly on those times when wewere without aches and pains and life seemed so muchsimpler. Time always has a way of softening the edges ofreality and we achieve selective memory. The Class of 1960is no exception. Having entered first grade in 1948, ourwhole educational career was achieved in what we fondlyrecall as the “fabulous fifties.” (Fifties music is still ourfavorite.)Our students came from elementary classes at the Emaus,Wood, Susquehanna Streets schools, Royalton, and FeaserSchools. In fifth grade, because of overcrowding, some of ushad to attend class in the Borough building in what is nowthe Council chambers. In eighth grade, we all entered FeaserSchool and were thoroughly intimidated by Mr. Roxsandic. We finished 8th and 9th grades at Feaser and then enteredthe hallowed halls of the high school. It was a time of severeovercrowding in the school district and so for those threeyears we had split shifts or half days. Some days we startedschool as early as 7 a.m., went home at 10:30 for a 2-1/2hour lunch and returned until dismissal at 4 p.m. (That tooksome getting used to.) In nice weather, we’d sit on the wallat the high school and wait for boys to drive by and pick upgirls for rides in their cars.In those days, there were dances held in the gym over lunchtime. On Thursday nights, we could go to the MethodistChurch where dances were held in their “new” EducationalBuilding. The Elks Theatre was the place to go for Saturdaynight movies. Boys actually asked girls out on dates andwent to their houses and picked them up. Most of us wentto the first show and then had time to go to Stuckeys orBottseys for a soda before heading home.Proms were the highlight of the year. Woe to the studentwho had a girl or boyfriend not in the Junior or Senior class.Either that classmate didn’t go to the prom or had to go withsomeone “approved” by his/her significant other. We didn’thave to worry about tux’s matching evening gowns in thosedays – they were generally white. As far as career planning, we could either take the Academiccoursework if we knew we were going to go to college,or take a business or general curriculum. The biggest jobopportunity in the area was at Olmsted AFB which wouldsend people to the high school to give clerical tests forjob placement. Those tested were then put on a waitinglist according to scores and we sat back and waited to becalled for a job! Those who went to Olmsted often found ahusband there from the many airmen who called Olmstedhome. At that time, too, there were numerous industriesand businesses in the area for those interested in goingdirectly into a job. It was much easier to find satisfying andprofitable work in those days. The Class of 1960 graduated and went its various ways, butfaithfully, every five years, we have held a reunion of oldfriends and classmates. This year, we added a bonus – acruise to Bermuda was made in September, and even thoughthree hurricanes were in the area that week, we had a perfecttrip and wonderful camaraderie. We have become a smallergroup, more mellow, more accepting of the effects of timeand trials and of each other. It is good to have memories, and now they are mostly sweet, as memories tend to be overtime. As we look back, we can say we’re glad we were there;we have no regrets.4 ALUMNI NEWS
