We feel it is essential that our students go outand experience these places and cultures; so essentialthat we’ve built such excursions into our curriculum. Whywouldn’t we visit the Hadzaba, one of the last remaininghunter-gatherer societies on the planet? Why wouldn’t weinvestigate East Africa’s coastal history and landformswhile visiting the Tanzanian coast? Why wouldn’t we studyhow weather and agriculture interact on the fertile slopesof Kilimanjaro? Outside the formal curriculum, there areother avenues to experience our rich surroundings.Time and time again we witness students forming lastingbonds and having life-changing experiences duringOutdoor Pursuit (OP) trips as they camp and ascend theheights of Kilimanjaro and Meru. The OP treks are dividedinto 6 levels based on altitude and difficulty, and successat a level allows students to progress to the next.Given our surroundings, it’s no coincidence that we havea thriving Visiting Schools Programme (VSP) that hostsInternational schools from all over the world, and whosestudents interact with people and places in northernTanzania. The Physical Education curriculum takes a games-centredapproach that not only develops specific sports skills butalso increases motivation for healthy living. It also developsthe skills of teamwork, setting personal bests and achievingthem, as well as tactical and strategic thinking. We feel that participation in sports, at both informal andcompetitive levels, can be an important ingredient of everychild’s life. ‘House’ activities and sports events help ensurechildren of all ages find a way to improve self-esteem andhave fun through physical exercise. Some of our students gofurther and excel in inter-school sports competitions, manyof which we host on our campuses. As you can imagine, such events are wonderful community and family occasionsto celebrate sporting participation and success.Co-curricular activities also come under this umbrella. After classes finish, students can try out new sports, creative activities, and community projects. For Secondarystudents, these co-curricular activities (CCAs) arecompulsory and extend their learning out of the classroom. There are multiple other opportunities for young people toparticipate in sports and the outdoors, and we know formany students, their memories of ISM are just as muchabout their physically active lives as with their learning inthe classroom16
