Kinabalu National ParkToday, you travel out to Mt. Kinabalu National Park and to the base of the highest mountain betweenthe Himalayas and New Guinea. Catch a glimpse of the summit, often shrouded in cloud. The hugerock monolith looms over you as a daunting reminder of the climb you are about to embark on butdon’t be discouraged, it’s a hugely rewarding experience! Spend the afternoon exploring the trailsaround the park or opt to travel to Ranau and the Poring Hot Springs for a relaxing soak. (B)Mt. KinabaluSet off early on Day 3 to tackle the mighty Mt. Kinabalu, whose summit stands at an impressive4,095m (13,435 feet)! It’s a fair slog to the top but well marked and with shelters along the way totake brief rests. The surrounding scenery is varied and should be enough to take your mind off thejourney ahead of you. Altitude can be a problem for some people so take your time, enjoy the pristineenvironment around you and hopefully you will successfully reach the top of this monumental peak.Night three is spent sleeping in a basic mountain hut before rising early to climb upwards towardsthe peak. After reaching the summit, pat yourself on the back before heading back down, a walk ofaround five to seven hours. What an achievement! (2B, 2L, D)Kinabatangan RiverJourney along the Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s longest river and home to an incredible variety ofwildlife. Take an afternoon cruise and look out for kingfishers, macaques and proboscis monkeys. Ifyou’re lucky, you may also spot more elusive species including elephants, otters and orang-utans.Stay overnight in the jungle where you can check out all kinds of species in their native environmentbefore being soothed to sleep by the sounds of the surrounding wilderness.
