<strong>Using</strong> <strong>Your</strong> <strong>Own</strong> <strong>IT</strong> <strong>Devices</strong> <strong>at</strong> BHASVICDid you know?You can get access to the <strong>College</strong> Network and internet connection via your own device!This access is available through any Wi-Fi enabled device (laptops, tablets, smart phones, etc.)How do I find the connection?Connection is via the <strong>College</strong> Wireless system using the GUEST connection. This is not a hiddenconnection so your Wi-Fi device will be able to find it. There is no password for this connection.How do I log in?Once your device has found the connection and you open up an internet browser or try to connect toany other internet service, you will be asked to login to the <strong>College</strong> network using your normal <strong>College</strong>login and password.Wh<strong>at</strong> services are available to me?Once you have logged in you can use any service th<strong>at</strong> can be accessed via your device’s web browser:VLE - you can access the <strong>College</strong> VLE in the same way th<strong>at</strong> you would do from home.<strong>College</strong> files – you will have full access to your <strong>College</strong> files via the link on the VLE or directly fromyour device browser <strong>at</strong> www.bhasvic.ac.uk/myfiles Depending on the device you are using, you will beable to view many types of document. However, to work on your files your device has to be able toopen the file and have the appropri<strong>at</strong>e software installed. For example, if you want to work on a Worddocument you will need a device th<strong>at</strong> can open Word documents and have MS Word installed.Email - you can login to and use your BHASVIC Google email accounts as well as any personal emailaccounts you have.World Wide Web - you can browse any pages th<strong>at</strong> are available on a <strong>College</strong> PC.Certain m<strong>at</strong>erial and social networking pages will be denied access in the same way as they are usinga <strong>College</strong> computer. If you have special “Group policy” access to certain sites (as part of a subjectrequest) which are normally denied to a default student – you will not have access to these sites via theWi-Fi network.Important consider<strong>at</strong>ions:SecurityBHASVIC will not be responsible or liable for any device th<strong>at</strong> you bring in with you to <strong>College</strong>. Werecommend you have insurance cover, and th<strong>at</strong> you are able to keep your device safe from theft <strong>at</strong> alltimes. If you leave your device un<strong>at</strong>tended, forget where you left it or leave it on public transport it willbe your responsibility entirely to find or replace.


StorageBHASVIC does not have storage facilities and lockers are unlikely to be secure for large or expensivedevices. We recommend light, portable devices th<strong>at</strong> you can carry around with you <strong>at</strong> all times. If youare not able to do this then we advise th<strong>at</strong> you do not bring the device into <strong>College</strong>. Large, heavypowerful laptops are not advised!ChargingBHASVIC will not allow device charging, or running a device from a mains supply. If you are working forextended periods during the day and your device will not have the charge for this then you will beexpected to manage your work between <strong>College</strong> facilities and your own device.SoftwareBHASVIC cannot provide any form of software or maintenance for devices.Acceptable Use of Computers PolicyThis policy applies equally to students and staff using their own devices when <strong>at</strong> the <strong>College</strong> as it doeswhen a <strong>College</strong>-owned device is being used.
