Do NZ employers and firms believe that there areliteracy and numeracy skill gaps in theirworkforces?• Yes. 35% of all respondents said that at least some of theiremployees had difficulties with literacy and numeracy. The industrythat reported the highest levels was manufacturing, construction andinfrastructure, where 54% of firms reported literacy and numeracyissues.• No firm stated that literacy needs were “very widespread” in theirworkplaces, but 40% of those firms that had reported literacyproblems felt that they were “moderately widespread” – in otherwords, they affected a “noticeable proportion of employees” and had“some impact on firm operations.”(Green et al, 2008)
