GIACOMINI U.K. LTDUNDERFLOOR HEATING & COOLINGCOMPATIBLE ENERGY SOURCESBIOMASSSOLARAIR SOURCEGROUNDSOURCEWith increased support from government initiatives such as Green Deal and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)encouraging home and business owners to use more green technology, underfloor heating is swiftly becomingthe heating partner of choice for many renewable energy systems. When linked with technologies such as ground and air source heat pumps, biomass boilers or solar thermalsystems, underfloor heating can offer its users a sustainable solution to cutting energy costs and reducing theircarbon footprint.Underfloor heating compliments these renewable energy sources because it uses less energy for distributionthan a traditional radiator system. This is due to its low flow and return temperatures. The choice doesn’t end there. Giacomini are proud to introduce you to H2YDROGEM®, our innovative catalyticburner that allows the production of thermal energy totally free from fossil-fuels.The H2YDROGEM® was developed after an extensive programme of research and development that aimed tofind a zero emissions heating cycle. The H2YDROGEM® produces heat by combining hydrogen and air inside acatalyser, uniquely this method of heat production does not combust the gasses, which means no bi-productsof combustion or greenhouse gasses. By mixing the two elements together it produces steam, which thencondenses and in turn produces heat energy. Heat produced by the reaction is removed by a heat exchangerembedded in the burner. The water temperature is between 35 and 40°C, ideal to feed low temperature heatingsystems such as underfloor heating.HYDROGENPAGE: 06T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk W: www.giacomini.co.uk

It isestimated that in commercial properties underfloor heating can reduce heating costs by up to 40% when compared to the energycosts of conventional radiator or hot air heating systems. An area heated with a low temperature radiant system, especially in commercial properties where height and surface areas areoften significant, will have low air movement. This avoids the air stratification and the notable upward dispersion of heat thatoccurs with a traditional heating system.• Reduced Vandalism (Lower risk of site thefts due to its limited scrap value).• Improved Health & Safety (No risk from high surface temperatures & sharp edges).• Healthier Environment (Increased staff well-being & productivity, reduced illnesses).T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345PAGE: 09

They include concrete structural floors and concrete screed floors, as well as block and beam floors witha screed finish. The type of solid floor selected will depend upon the structural requirements of the floor. A typical screeded floor sectionis shown above, pointing out the different elements of the floor structure and showing the Giacomini underfloor heatingpipework within the structure. The sub-base will usually be made up of two layers, the first being a compact or consolidated hard-core, which will havea sand binding layer on top. A damp proof membrane (DPM), typically 1200 Gauge, is usually included at this level; this isessential to stop moisture transfer into the concrete base.Insulation is then laid. This is necessary to meet current building ‘U’ values and to comply with current building regulations. As well as to reduce downward heat loss.Giacomini PE-X pipework is then laid, held in place with poly-propylene U-Clips and the screed. The makeup and thicknessof the screed will be determined by the structural requirements of the floor. Screed used for this type of underfloor heatingshould not include any insulating materials. The heating pipework is positioned giving a minimum screed cover of 30mm(25mm + 5mm deflection for clips).Screed floors will be laid onto a sub-base, which can be a concrete base or a block and beam sub floor.PAGE: 10T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345

Therefore it is essential that planning begins at an early stage in the project and the building contractor isinformed of the construction required for the radiant panel. The underfloor heating plated system can be easily adapted toaccommodate a number of special floor details, including sprung floors and cross battens.Suspended floor systems include both joisted floors with conventional joists, as well as solid floors with battens fixed tothe floor. The underfloor heating system consists of aluminium diffusion plates spanning between the joists or battens. Thediffusion plates are grooved to accept the heating pipework.Sprung floor: With battens loose laid onto blocks supported on a solid base, the underfloor heating is fitted in the normalmanner, but using double sided tape to hold the plates in position. The use of tape avoids dislodging the battens whenfixing the plates.Cross battens: If joist centres are not suitable for installing the diffusion plate, the floor can be cross battened with thebattens fixed at 400mm centres (this work must be completed prior to Giacomini installers arriving on site). The underfloorheating system can be installed on the cross battens. Outputs from the plated system are limited to around70W/m 2 but will depend upon the floor finishes.T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345PAGE: 11

The panels are produced in a range of thicknesses from 30mm–100mm. The installation of this system is very simple.Panels are laid with the bell at each end of the room, with panels butt jointed and cut to size.Once the panels are in place, the aluminium plates are pressed into the grooves, leaving a gap at each end for the pipe turns.PAGE: 12T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345

GIACOMINI U.K. LTDUNDERFLOOR HEATING & COOLINGSCREEDGiacomini’s Guide To ScreedWith many years of experience within the underfloor heating sector, Giacomini has built up several strong relationships withquality UK screed providers. We are proud to be able to offer their services within our underfloor heating package, giving you asingle point of responsibility. When considering a screeded floor system there are two main types of screed to consider.Flowing Screed (Liquid)Flowing screeds are generally made from a mixture ofcalcium sulphate, sand and various other chemicals toproduce a ‘Liquid’ screed. These are pre-mixed whendelivered to site and ‘poured’ then levelled. This meansthat larger areas can be installed faster. Wire mesh can beused to enhance the strength of these screeds. In addition, several manufacturers are now replacing calcium sulphatewith cement to produce a ‘Liquid-Cementitious’ screedwhich is stronger and faster drying, although this is still notcommon.Advantages:• Quicker to install in larger areas.• Requires fewer expansion joints.• Better thermal conductivity.• Lower screed thickness required.Sand & Cement Based Screed(Semi-DRY)Sand and cement screeds are generally a 4:1 mixture of sandand cement, which are usually reinforced with PP fibres. These screeds are normally mixed on site but can comeready mixed. Various additives can be added to enhancethe drying times or strength of these screeds.Advantages:• Can be used for wet areas.• Can be laid to falls.• Can be mixed on site.• Less preparation required.• Generally quicker drying times. If you are interested in including one of our approved screeding services within your quotation, please advise your localGiacomini representative.PAGE: 14T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345

The vast mixedusedevelopment will include high quality homes, surrounded by open space, businesses, and communityfacilities.Giacomini UK was drafted in on the 2nd phase of theproject to install a dual heating system, utilising both ourunderfloor heating and heat interface units.PROJECTOur solid floor underfloor heating system was selected toheat both the town houses and core apartments.Seventy-five twin heat interface units were installedwithin in the core apartments blocks. The primary circuit supplies two heat exchangers withinthe unit that in turn supply the underfloor heating andgenerate instant domestic hot water. This offers an effective and fair solution to providingheating and instantaneous hot water for communalproperties. In 2013 Giacomini launched its latest heat interface unit, the G5, which is available to order directly from the UKoffice. To find out more about ourNew Heat Interface Unit, please scan the QR code >>PAGE: 16T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345

GIACOMINI U.K. LTDUNDERFLOOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING & COOLING HEATINGFLOOR FINISHESWhen selecting the final floor finish, consideration must begiven to its suitability and the affects that it may have onthe performance of your UFH system.Three factors must be taken into account:• Thermal resistance:This is the measurement of temperature difference bywhich a material resists a heat flow. This can be influencedby factors such as the thickness and thermal conductivityof the material. Thermal resistance of flooring is shown viaits ’ Tog value’.• Temperature constraints:When selecting your flooring its is important to decipherwhether any of its material properties have any thermalrestrictions to consider. For example, certain vinyl adhesivesand timber flooring may not exceed 27 °C. This is easilycompensated for at the design stage.• Suitability of the underfloor heating floor structure:Depending on the type of underfloor heating system youchoose there may be additional factors within its buildupthat could impact your floor selection. For example, when underfloor heating has been applied to a large area, expansion joints may be required in order to control anyheat-induced expansion or contraction. It is important toconsider this movement when selecting your floor finish. There are four basic types of floor finish which should beconsidered: ceramic, which includes natural stone materialssuch as flag stones, plastic or vinyl floor coverings, timberand timber products, and carpet. The table below demonstrates the tog values of differentfloor finishes. A higher thermal resistance (Tog value)will reduce the heat output into the designated space, instead raising the temperature within the underlying floorstructure.• Ceramic tiles • Limestone • MARBLE• POLISHED SCREED • SlatE • flagStonES• VINYL • LINOLEUM • Marmoleum• laminatE TILES • RUBBER • AMTICOCERAMIC EXAMPLESACCEPTABLE thermal resistancesFINISH TOG RESISTANCE15mm Ceramic Tile 0.17 0.017mK/W20mm Marble 0.10 0.001mK/WPlease note:• Please take into consideration expansion joints priorto laying the ceramic floor finish.• Flexible adhesive must be used to reduce the risk ofthe tile or stone splitting or cracking.ACCEPTABLE thermal resistancesFINISH TOG RESISTANCE2mm Vinyl 0.30 0.03mK/W2mm Linoleum 0.74 0.074mK/WPlease note:• Always check the manufacturer’s recommendedmaximum floor surface temperature to ensure theproduct is suitable for use with UFH.PLASTIC & VINyL EXAMPLESTIMBER EXAMPLES• Engineered timber• Hardwood• Softwood • PARQUET • BAMBOOACCEPTABLE thermal resistancesFINISH TOG RESISTANCE18mm Oak 1.13 0.113mK/W22mm Ply/Chipboard 1.57 0.157mK/WPlease note:• Take in to consideration board width andthickness when specifying the floor finish.• Timber floor surface temperatures are limited to27°C, to avoid problems with moisture within thewood.• CARPET • CORK • CoirACCEPTABLE thermal resistancesFINISH TOG RESISTANCECombined carpet (100polypropylene hardtwist) and underlay1.90 0.190mK/W(waffle)Combined carpet (100wool loop pile) andunderlay(rubber crumb)1.70 0.170mK/WPlease note:• We recommend a maximum combined Tog value of2.5 for carpet and underlay.CARPET EXAMPLESThe information contained in this document is intended for general guidance only. Please contact your selected flooring manufacturer for accurate data.T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk F: 01454 316345PAGE: 17

PM100W - 230v 8 Zone UNDERFLOOR HEATINGWiring CentreThe PM100W is designed to control heating installationswhere temperature control is made by room thermostats, which operate electric actuators controlling water supply toindividual circuits. This 230v wiring centre is for use with mixing or distributionmanifolds allowing you to control up to 8 individualthermostats. The unit contains a control relay with time delay for the UFHcirculating pump and a relay for switching external controls.Time switches with volt free contacts can be connected tothe unit. The PM100W offers many benefits to the final users, such as:• Deactivation of the circulating pump when all electricalactuators are in the off-position. Avoiding energy wastageand unnecessary wear on the circulating pump.• Activation of the circulating pump, with a 4 minutes delay, from the moment a thermostat requires the opening ofthe electrical actuators. This relay guarantees the completeopening of the linked hydraulic circuits.• Constant monitoring of the supply and deactivation of thecirculation pump, when the pre-set temperature limit hasbeen exceeded for more than 4 minutes. This avoids repeatignition and shutdown of the system, which can have afuture impact on the temperature regulation of the mixervalve.FIG.B• Allows control of supplementary heating elements (e.g.boiler) with auxiliary connections.• Daily or weekly event program (connecting a time clock ora time switch).• Night set back function (connecting a time switch).• The status of each 230v electrical actuator (normally closed)is indicated using LED signals.• Direct installation of the product on the wall with protectivecasing.FIG.AKEY SIGNAL STATUSFIG.c12Activation ofthe electricalactuators.Activation ofthe time switch.Supplytemperaturealarm.Supplytemperaturesignal.A red light is shown when itscorresponding zone (1-8) iscalling for heat (via the roomthermostat).Time switch is positive.3High limit exceeded. GIACOMINI U.K. LTDUNDERFLOOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING HEATING FAQ’S1 9How do I CONNECT my UNDERFLOOR HEATINGsystem TO the boiler? The underfloor heating system should be connected to theboiler through the manifold. The manifold controls the heatrequirement for the underfloor system by blending hot waterfrom the boiler with cooler returned water from the floorcircuits. Most boilers have a high output temperature (80-85°C)to cater for the other heat requirements of the dwelling (e.g.hot water cylinder, radiators and towel rails), which meansthat they should not be connected directly to the underfloorsystem. Why do I need ANOTHER pump on the manifold? The pump circulates the water within the underfloor heatingsystem and will continue to operate after the injector valve hasclosed and hot water is no longer being mixed with the returnwater. It is also required where the pump on the boiler wouldnot achieve the required flow rates in the system. Please note:Pumps are only required on mixing manifolds (for use on hightemperature circuits, which require blending down).Where should the manifold be positioned? The manifold can be positioned virtually anywhere in thebuilding, as long as there is enough heat output to supply thedemand. However it is preferable to site the manifold centrallyin the building to ensure pipe runs to circuits are kept to aminimum. Will PUTTING CARPET OVER the UNDERFLOORheating HAVE an EFFECT on it?Yes, carpet will slow the heat transmission down because of itsthermal resistance. However this should not significantly affectthe overall performance of the system. It is important thatcarpeting is specified as a requirement during the design of thesystem and that the correct underlay is fitted; this preferablyshould have a tog rating of less than 1.Will underfloor heating WORK withLAMINATE FLOORING?Yes, however care should be taken when selecting laminateunderlay. The manufacturer’s advice should be soughtregarding suitability for use with underfloor heating, as somelaminate underlays are highly insulating. Can UNDERFLOOR HEATING be INSTALLED on apressurised sealed SYSTEM?Yes, it can be installed on any sealed or open vented typesystem. How LONG does UNDERFLOOR HEATING taketo WORK?Normally from cold, a typical solid floor system will take 3-5hours to reach temperature. However when the system isoperational, it will only lose on average 4°C in an 8 hour period, therefore it will only take a couple of hours to reach operatingtemperature in normal operation. What type and thickness of FLOORINSULATION should be used?Any board type of insulation can be used. However the foiledhigh-density polyurethane foam is likely to suffer less sitedamage due to the high compressive strength. Pipe fixingstaples also hold very firmly into this type of insulation. Thethickness of insulation required is calculated to achieve aU-value of 0.25, which is the minimum permitted by theBuilding Regulations. Insulation thickness will therefore bedifferent for every building and should be calculated whendesigning the building. What type of screed do I use?In most cases normal sharp sand and cement mix can be usedfor a standard 75mm screed. If the screed is to be less than75mm other options should be considered. Advice should besought from a screed manufacturer as additives and fibres canbe added for additional strength and flexibility. For very thinscreeds a special mix is required, however there is a possibilitythat the floor temperature will not be even, with warm stripsabove the pipe centres.Do I need to add a PLASTICIZER to the screedmix?2 10345678No, however it is important when screeding an underfloorheating system that the screed envelopes the pipe fully for it towork to its full potential. Screed is normally installed very dry;therefore care must be taken to avoid air pockets around theUFH pipe. Adding a plasticizer to the mix can help the screedflow better, thereby avoiding air pockets. Screed as a wet mixshould be avoided because this can cause shrinkage andcracking when drying out. It is advisable to seek expert advicefrom a screed manufacturer. What is the edge INSULATION strip for?Edge insulation strip serves two purposes. Firstly it forms aninsulation barrier around the floor slab and therefore preventsheat loss to surrounding walls. Secondly, it acts to fill theexpansion gap around the slab, allowing the floor to expandand contract as it warms up and cools down. What is the CONDUIT used for?On screeded installations the conduit is installed over theunderfloor heating pipes, where they cross into adjoiningrooms (generally at doorways). This is important because if aroom is heated and an adjacent room is not, the floors expandin different directions and the pipe passing through thedoorway could be damaged. The conduit pipe can also be usedto reduce heat loss in the transit portion of pipework (sectionof pipe from manifold to heated room) or when pipe passesthrough an area that is not to be heated (under kitchen units). What pipe SPACING should I use?Giacomini underfloor heating systems can be individuallydesigned. Please refer to your design data sheet or call ourdesign office. How is the SYSTEM CONTROLLED?Usually, electrical actuator heads are fitted to each underfloorheating pipe circuit. These actuators are controlled either bya central thermostat or individual room thermostats, linkedtogether with a time clock through a wiring centre. A weathercompensation circuit may also be incorporated in the systemto adjust for outside temperature variations. The system canalso be controlled via a BMS (Building Management System). How much WATER will there be in anunderfloor HEATING SYSTEM?An 18mm pipe will contain 0.154 litres per linear metre of pipe.In addition there will be an amount of water in the manifoldand pump. Can I put a manifold in the FLOOR and feedup?Yes, but it is not recommended as air locks may occur. Can CORROSION INHIBITORS be used in thesystem?Yes, Giacomini recommend the use of corrosion inhibitors suchas Sentinel 100 or Fernox MB in all systems. Advice should besought from the inhibitor manufacturer to check compatibility.11121314151617T: 01454 311012 E: enquiries@giacomini.co.uk W: www.giacomini.co.ukPAGE: 35
