The UA’s Steele Children’s Research Center “PANDA Children’sAerodigestive Disorders Center” OpensNovember 7, 2007From: Darci Slaten, 520-626-7217The University of Arizona SteeleChildren’s Research Center’s “PANDAChildren’s Aerodigestive DisordersCenter” opened today. It is housedwithin the UPH Clinics at Wilmot, located at 535 N. Wilmot Road. The PANDA Children’s AerodigestiveDisorders Center is the only one of itskind in the state of Arizona and the southwest. The center serves children who sufferfrom aerodigestive disorders—complex problems involving the airway, lungs anddigestive tracts caused by food allergies and airborne allergens. A few examples of thesedisorders include eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), eosinophilic gastroenteritis andGastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), to name a few. Children with aerodigestivediseases experience nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, choking, cramping and diarrhea. Many children often fail to grow.Arizona has far more cases of EE/EG and other aerodigestive disorders than the nationalaverage. Until now, there has not been a dedicated clinic in the southwest where childrencan receive the special care needed for these painful disorders. The PANDA Center will use a team approach to treat children with aerodigestivedisorders. “Aerodigestive disorders span the sub-specialties of gastroenterology/nutrition,pulmonary, and allergy/immunology, so a team approach is the most effective way totreat these children,” says Steele Center director and pediatric gastroenterologist FayezK. Ghishan, MD. Dr. Ghishan, pediatric allergist/immunologist Michael Daines, MD,pediatric pulmonologist Cori Daines, MD, and nutritionist Lindsay Brown, MS, RDwill serve as the aerodigestive team.“The PANDA Center has been made possible solely through the generosity of ourvolunteer group the PANDAs. We are grateful for their fundraising efforts that havemade the center a reality,” says Dr. Ghishan. The PANDAs (People Acting Now Discover Answers) are the Phoenix Women’s Boardof the Steele Children’s Research Center and have been raising funds for the SteeleCenter for many years.
