Update of interface drawings with the following CRs:
- FHFCU; CR0138 version 2 accepted, see above.
- FHLOU; CR0143 version 1 accepted, see above.
- FHLOR; CR0135 version 2 accepted, see above.
o Section 5.11.1
According IID-A, section 5.11.1: “For each instrument, the average Critical HK
rate shall represent 330bps max, at assembled packet level. 2 solutions are
acceptable…”. This requirement is not reflected in the relevant section of IIDF-
B
Sentence to be added to HIFI IID-B 3.3 (statement of compliance):
“The essential housekeeping packet as described in the ”HIFI HK PS ICD”, Ref. SRON-U/HIFI/SP/2001-
003, is compliant to the corresponding requirement of 330bps in section 5.11.1 of IID-A.
o Any other IID-B issue
ESA has performed a “pre” CCB and concluded readiness to sign the IID-B pending implementation of
above changes.
AI #3: HIFI will verify if the caveats written on the first page of IID-B version 3.2 can be deleted by
06/09/2005.
• Standing wave: ESA position is believed by ESA to have been accepted by HIFI.
• LOU window icing: ASP confirm that the baseline is still the passive baffle (non heated). ESA is
performing a investigation on an heatable baffle solution.
• Pointing: As built configuration has been explained to HIFI, and has not been accepted by HIFI .
It has been agreed that the next issue of HIFI IID-B (version 3.3) shall be the “final one”. In the future
changes (non compliances shall be handled with RfW’s in order to minimize work on IID-B update.
- IMT preparation and planning
o Procedure status
HIFI has not yet send the required input by 31/08/2005 as it was agreed. HIFI explained, that Nick
Whyborn, who is currently on holidays, can only provide the detailed hourly planning during next week
(cw 36).
ASED explained, that there are still 6 open NCR’s which are related to the start of the IMT.
ASED makes clear that the relevant NCR’s have to be processed prior to IMT.
HIFI invites ESA (JR), ASED (SI) & ASP(BC/GD) to participate to a Teleconference on this subject
Monday 5/9 13:30. HIFI will send the participation details by mail.

date 2 September 2005 reference SCI-PT-37771 page 6 / 11
ASP stated that the issue of “double sending” the first command is not yet solved by Alenia.
HIFI IMT will be performed with the currently implemented ICU AVM. According HIFI planning CFM2
ICU will be available for an exchange by the end of the IMT campaign. The OBSW on CFM2 ICU will be
version 2.22 (as it is on ICU AVM), or if any adaptation is needed, by only minor changes to version 2.22.
- LSU simulator interface fit check on SVM simulator
During LSU simulator fit check, it turned out, that the interims WG I/F have a different flange w.r.t to the
defined end of the WG I/F. Since the mechanical WG integration on the EQM model will be done not at
the end of the WG’s, but on an interim I/F, the flange will not fit to the flexible WG, provided by HIFI.
Work around solution to be identified. Currently there are two options:
1. enhance the interim I/F by an additional piece of WG with the correct flange. This would lead to a
bend of the flexible WG.
2. as above, but without the bend. Instead of the mechanical mounting of the LSU simulator on the
SVM simulator panel has to be done with a spacer (with the size of the additional WG piece.)
HIFI IMT TRR is scheduled for 08/09/2005 at 10:30 @ASED-OTN.
HIFI EMC Meeting is scheduled for 07/09/2005 at 10:30 @ASED-OTN
Prior to the HIFI IMT there will be a HIFI SFT after successful LSU simulator integration.
- WOH/V thermal stability
Industry is currently analyzing the Claudio Damasio’s proposal to increase the thermal control interval
from 10s to 100s.
Regardless the investigations on the thermal stability issue, and regardless the different understanding of
WOH/V interface locations, it has been agreed, that the operational temperature range of WOH and WOV
on the mounting feet will be in the range of +5 to +15 degrees.
3. HIFI System Status/Schedule (Presentation HIFI)
- Last month achievements
- Planned next month achievements
- Identification of major problems, which can seriously impact HIFI planning.
Detailed status of HIFI System is attached in ANNEX #2, Section 1
Early ICU WBS integration tests have been successfully performed in KOSMA, with still some open
details to be solved.
4. Focal Plane Subsystem Status (Presentation HIFI)
Detailed status of HIFI FPU is attached in ANNEX #2, Section 2
On band 6 a random misalignment have been identified. FPU group is investigating whether cause is in
Mixers (as in band 5) or in MSA mounting, or in test equipment. In case the misalignment of the mixer
units is found to be acceptable, the recovery would be to adapt the alignment of the MSA (under HIFI FPU
group control).

date 2 September 2005 reference SCI-PT-37771 page 7 / 11
It is still the plan of HIFI to provide the QM Up-converter to ASED prior to start of the EMC tests. Best
would be to integrate the up-converter during the same slot, when the ICU AVM will be replaced with the
CFM2 ICU.
FCU:
Multiplier draw too high current. Cause not yet understood. Testing of one of the 3 board design is on hold
due to manpower focusing on solving the over-current issue. FCU delivery to HIFI system is already
affected. SRON is investigating measure to compensate. Urgent Solution needed.
FPGA design verification showed minor errors, which will be corrected. Require 1 week of additional
testing, with no impact on the FCU delivery date to HIFI system.
5. LO Subsystem Status (Presentation HIFI)
Detailed status of HIFI LOU is attached in ANNEX #2, Section 4.
By end of September ALL FM boxes will be delivered to MPIfR. This is compliant with LO s/s schedule.
FS box to follow soon.
The dowel pin hole drilling is wrongly mentioned as schedule risk in section 4 of Annex #2, because the
approach to drill the holes has been agreed during HIFI PM #5 (SCI-TT-37145), which does not need any
longer both plates (Astrium plate and MPIfR plate at the same time).
Detailed status of HIFI LCU is attached in ANNEX #2, Section 5.
LCU software activities are ongoing (transfer from Labview procedures to OBSW). LCU PCB’s have been
completed except areas where items are not finalized (band 6 biasing approach). LCU FM hardware is not
on the critical pass of the LO s/s. HIFI explained, that even if the entire HIFI ILT may be performed with
the existing intermediate model (software can be updated at any time), only a very limited set of system
tests are needed prior HIFI system delivery to ESA (involving the FM LCU)..
Detailed status of HIFI LSU is attached in Annex #2, Section 6
6. WBS Status (Presentation HIFI)
Detailed status of HIFI WBS is attached in Annex #2, Section 7
Delivery dates are in line with HIFI system needs.
7. HRS Status (Presentation HIFI)
Detailed status of HIFI WRH/V is attached in Annex #2, Section 8
Delivery dates are in line with HIFI system needs.
AI #4 HIFI to check if provisions performed on HRS unit level EMC tests as described in CESR-
HRS-NC-322-392, are implemented in the WIH integration on the EQM. If not, it shall be included
prior to start of the EMC test. Due date: 07/09/2005.
8. ICU Status (Presentation HIFI)

date
2 September 2005 reference SCI-PT-37771 page 8 / 11
Monthly Progress Meeting with CGS are still not being hold on a regular basis. Issue has been addressed
with ASI. ESA is trying to set up the next Progress Meeting in September (Proposal 21/09/2005) Current
delivery dates:
CFM2: 09/09/2005
ANNEX #2
HIFI Progress Report # 6, 2 Sept 05
Prepared by: Paul Wesselius, Kees Wafelbakker
To: Representatives ESA, HIFI mailing list
Date: 1 Sept 2005
1. HIFI System
1.1 Engineering
• A Radiator DRB was held. The main NCR was on mass (overmass ca. 1.2
kg). Permission to ship was given. Meanwhile ABAQUS analysis indicates
that there are no structural consequences for the radiator or for what HIFI can
see for the Astrium supports (this may have to do with the notching on strut
loads) Consolidation of these conclusions will be before PM#7 and in time for
STM testing mid-October.
• Bridgeing Waveguide Procurement is ongoing, a Tender has been received
and is being negotiated regarding delivery planning.
• Comments to the next issues of IID-A and IID-B were generated.
• CQM IST at Astrium was supported, including SFT checkout of the LOU and
LCU and preparations for IMT including the LSU simulator
1.2 PA
Prepared by: H.M. Jacobs
date: 1 st September
1.2.1 Summary
During the last period, the main attention was focussed on system issues and FP and LO
subsystem support.
The support given had a high engineering intensity. Due to this, the processing of HIFI
system non-conformances has a serious backlog.
1.2.2 Work performed
FP Up-convertor:
-Pre-cap inspection and TRRB on QM 10-08-2005
-EEE parts procurement for FM.
-Detailed support regarding the test program on QM.
FP-CSA:
-Preparations for TRRB on the FM
FP-FPU:
-Development and flight screening of coaxial cables.
-Materials/processes verification.

ANNEX #2
1.2.3 Current activities
-Preparations for HIFI system PAD close-out meeting with ESA.
-Preparations for TRRB and DRB meetings
1.2.4 Coming activities
Meetings:
HIFI PAD close-out meeting . September 22 nd 2005
WBS FM TRRB September TBC
HRS-H FM DRB September TBC
1.2.5 Concerns
-Back-log in processing HIFI system NCR’s
-Closure of EEE parts level acceptance at the sub-systems versus the delivery schedule.
1.3 AIV and Deliveries
Prepared by: Willem Luinge
Date: 30 Aug 05
1.3.1 Last month achievements System AIV
1. QM IST at Astrium
1. harness LCU LOU checked
2. LSU simulator parts have been procured
2. ILT planning: a draft ILT manpower plan available for discussion
3. ILT detailed test plan updated (to a level that it is suitable for comments)
4. Report QM and DM 2 results available (not all evaluations complete)
5. Subsystem issues
3. ICU AVM2 and OBS 3.2 ‘passed’ post shipment test
4. LO tuning tested with LOU using AVM2 and OBS 3.2 (no RF
power and no FPU): successful
5. (Full blown test could not be finished; AVM2 needed for WBS test)
6. Wiki page installed
7. Beam scanner tested on band 1 DM; not yet validated (reliability to be
improved; alignment is now time consuming)

ANNEX #2
8. Early ICU WBS integration takes place at this moment
9. LSU DM post shipment test and performance test prepared
2.3.2 Planned next month achievements
1. IMT tests
2. Validation beam scanner part 2: open
3. Make an inventory of procedures that have to be updated and that have to
be made
4. IA course
5. Integration HRS (one polarization)
2. FPU
Prepared by: Klaas Wildeman
2.1 COA
• Mounting for the seven CLO 2’s redesigned, production drawings made, all
parts machined, COA structure modified, new CLO mount installed (all at
SRON) and TPD is working now on re-alignment (35 mirrors). The
modification of the COA structure was a delicate operation because all
mirrors stayed in place to minimize the re-alignment effort. Re-alignment at
TPD makes good progress. Sofar this action went successful.
• Fit check of housing of the Diplexer Assy (DA) on COA ongoing.
• External alignment still to be done (TPD).
• CLO part of cryo alignment verification will be done again (as planned; as part
of the first phase of FPU test).
2.2 DA
• The Diplexer Assembly with beamsplitters for 1, 2 and 5 (and 3 as option)
• During assembly we were confronted with an alignment problem (flatness
affected by mounting) of grids in the DA/DRT. Investigation is ongoing
• Effect on alignment of mounting DA onto COA quantified/tested (ongoing)
2.3 MSA’s and MU’s
MSA = Mixer SubAssembly; MU = Mixer Unit

ANNEX #2
• Band 2 completed.
• Band 1 almost completed.
• Alignment of both Band 5 MSA’s completed; assembly started.
• Assembly Band 3 MSA’s ongoing.
• Alignment deviations in Band 5 MU’s (as reported) and in Band 6 MU’s . All
Band 5 MU’s have an identical deviation. Band 6 MU’s, however, seem to
have a random misalignment. But we need more statistics and we need to
re-verify our mounting procedures.
• Anyhow, as a parallel activity we are designing special console frames to be
prepared for accommodating (to some extent) misaligned MU’s. These
frames will be fabricated to a certain level of completion. Final machining can
be done at the moment we know the exact misalignment.
• Consoles behave well . Thermal cycling (as a pre-stabilization) can be
reduced.
2.4 Important decisions
• The current baseline (diplexers in Bands 6L and H ) will be retained, the hope
to be able to replace these by beamsplitters has not materialised.
• No RF filters in Bands 6 will be implemented. Although testing could not be
completed due to failure of the prototype upconvertor, the available technical
indication is that the programmatic risk and the cost cannot be justified by the
needs of adequate performance.
2.5 Mechanisms and CSA
• FPC FM assembly going on
• FPC QM qualification going on
• CSA ready for testing
2.6 Planned next month activities
• Complete DA assembly/alignment and assembly/alignment of two DRT’s
(option)
• Continue band 3 and 5 assembly (band 5 alignment almost completed)
• Continue preparing consoles for an alignment correction of MU’s Band 5
(and probably for Band 6 too). Because of the potential misalignment of the
Mu’s of Band 6 we changed our approach in redesigning a little (all in close
co-operation with CTH).
• Complete alignment of COA.
2.1 Signal Chain
• Band 3 mixers delivered to FPU AIV.
• Band 6 mixer beam measurement program ongoing prior to reshipment to
Chalmers for finalisation of acceptance program.

ANNEX #2
2.2 Upconverter
Prepared by: M. Brandt
Date: 25 Aug 2005
2.2.1 Action Items
Action Items from the CDR Report
1. RPG to include the process for QA and engineering interactions regarding rework
in their PID.
Done
2. RPG to include the inspection criteria (workmanship standard) in the PIDs for
soldering, bonding and other processes requiring inspection. References to
applicable standards are sufficient.
Done
3. RPG to consult with SRON on adhesives in parts list for mass loss details.
RPG has not been able to find further details on EPOTEK 20H mass loss details
when baked at 80°C. No additional input from SRON.
4. Drawings need to include critical dimensions (for inspection) and de-bur criteria
Done
5. Hans to provide SAE specification for plating and RPG to incorporate it into their
PID.
Specifications have been integrated to best knowledge into the corresponding PIDs.
RPG does not have Automobile Specification to refer to.
6. RPG to sort out ESD/EMC test details with Albert Naber.
Intensive communication between RPG and Albert has sorted out most items. HIFI
asks RPG to use suitable cabling for EMC test, no further specification. RPG is
working out plans on EMC testing with Phoenix Lab, which can provide the facilities
to run most of the tests to specifications. One minor modification has been agreed to
by Albert concerning the low frequency handheld H-field sensor.
7. SRON to confirm bolt interface with Spacecraft (size, type and torque)
Naber.

ANNEX #2
DRO is mounted eletrically isolated at RPG. Pre tests at RPG with a dummy show
sufficient stability of the mounting. The use of M4 screws as recommended has
slightly increased the weight of the unit.
9. SRON to locate and deliver the 3dB coupler to RPG.
All couplers (QM+FM) received at RPG. In-band transmission variation of couplers is
compliant with procurement specifications, but not sufficient for the FHIFH/V unit
level specifications.
10. SRON to confirm that the cable from the upconverter to the 3dB coupler has
been ordered and to provide the RF requirements.
Parts for FM an QM have been received at RPG.
Done
21. RPG to provide a configured ICD to SRON.
Done, waiting for close out. Several changes and corresponding CNs have been
issued. Actual version: 2.9 31.5.05
22. JPL issue authorization for phase 2.

ANNEX #2
2.2.2 Development and planning status
Interface document
A change to the Interface document has to be issued, because the unit has higher
weight (700 g instead of 600 g) and the bonding stud torque has to be decreased to
1Nm. Both changes have been in-officially notified. A CN will follow.
Manufacturing package (drawings)
The FM drawings will have a minor change. A radius is integrated at the edge of the
DRO cramp. The requested move of a sidewall and the change of the SMA to PCB
interface will not be implemented. RPG will propose a correct way to ground the 2dB
attenuators.
2.2.3 Fabrication Status
QM fabrication and assembly is finished and the unit is sealed. FM fabrication is
starting.
2.2.4 Electrical Performance tests
Reflection
The Rework of the SMA to PCB transition has been successful. A minor nonconformance
remains at the Input port at 2.4 GHz (-11.5 dB instead of -13 dB). The
rest of the band and the other ports are compliant.
Transmission
The conversion gain and transmission band ripple of the up-converter is compliant to
specification. With the coupler, the passband ripple increases to 1.2 dB on one
output channel. The specification is 1 dB. The total loss is below 19 dB, which is
compliant.
The trough channel, which goes directly through the coupler without conversion is
specified to 0.5 dB. The measured value is 0.8 dB. This channel is not under the
influence of RPG. A notice about this problem had been issued at delivery of the
couplers.
Spurious Signals
All spurious signals and isolation values are compliant.
2.2.5 Environmental tests
The vibration test has been performed successful
The TV test is running
The shock test is scheduled for 29/30 th of August
The EMC test is scheduled for week 36
3. FCU, Status FM design and test
Prepared by: Frans Zwart, Bert-Joost vanLeeuwen
3.1 Technical status
• All FM board designs have partially been tested.
• Multiplexers draw excessive current at power-up; this causes occasional
erroneous FCU power-up. The problem is not quite understood. Extra
manpower and support is arranged. Manufacturer will be contacted.
• FPGA design verification has revealed several minor design errors. Design
will be corrected, requires 1 week additional testing.
• Programming of first flight FPGA's planned on 08-09, assembly on PCB’s
planned 12 to15 September.
• Final verification test FM-FCU and QM Chopper planned on 06-09.
• Cryogenic temperature sensor readout problem found and solved.
3.2 Planning
• FCU planning applicable: "Version June 2005, iss4, Wed 29-6-05"

ANNEX #2
• Delivery of FCU: 09-02-2006
• Status: Boardtest readiness on 10 October might slip to 30 October.
Problems mentioned above have also caused delay
• Acquisition of additional manpower has started.
4. LOU
Prepared by: Rolf Güsten
Date: 26 Aug 2005
4.1 External Parties
(1) Concerning our extended contract with Lewicki (extra costs covered by
MPIfR), they have delivered by now the QM box plus QM parts, and 4 flight
electronic boxes. The qualification was passed successfully with ragard to all
aspects. Incoming inspection and verification at LO S/S level confirmed
performance to specs.
The next boxes will be delivered (stacked) until September, compliant with our
schedule requirements.
(2) Millitech: finally a diode lot has been identified that provides adequate
performance for the flight spare triplers. Two of these new diodes were
successfully implemented into 2 bodies, which run now in the flight
acceptance program. Three more type IV units are to be built (spares).
(3) QMC: all grids delivered (flight and spare). NCR closed out.
(4) RPG: attenuator qualification closed successfully according to our
qualification note. Attenuators have been implemented now in chain 1b,2a,2b.
These activities have obviously caused delay at RPG in their program, but the
cause for the delay originates at the insufficient performance of the (JPL
provided) power amplifiers, not with RPG. Costs for extra work package:
covered by MPIfR
(5) RPG: LO chains:
• Band 1a delivered.
• Band 1b: attenuator built and acceptance tested. Chain in final acc. testing.
• Band 2b: chain acceptance finished successfully. EIDP provided by RPG for
approval.
• Band 2a successfully re-integrated with attenuator. Final steps of acceptance
testing taking place now. Delivery of EIDP/chain within the next 2 weeks.
• Chain 4a was tested cold and is currently in burn-in. Performance to specs.
• Chain 4b ready for performance tests. Waiting for test-setup, that was
allocated to higher-priority chains. Chain 4a/b shall be delivered 3 rd week of
September.
• Chain 3a ready for testing as soon as test setup available.
• Chain 3b A1D in queue for cryogenic testing.
4.2 On subsystem level

ANNEX #2
Cabling of cryostat for cool-test of LOA1+2 (scheduled for September) complete.
Semi-rigids in cryo tests. All LOAs manufactured. Last batch of mirrors and holders in
production in MPIfR workshop (LOA 1,2 have been fully assembled, waiting for the
chains to be integrated). LOA base plate ready, waiting for Astrium (pin oles/threads).
Schedule risks: various late design changes (requested from higher level and/or
suppliers) have been incorporated over the last few weeks. These have been
considered as minor, however, turned out to become schedule critical (dowel pin
holes and threads in the LOA plate, grid holder for polarization grid – we explained
the details at the last review meeting).
We are currently working with the machine shop on priority basis, not any more on lot
production. Means, if we need to have a total number of 14 of the same part, we
order only the number that is currently needed, to compensate for the extra load on
the workshop and to keep us on schedule. This brings turbulence into the fabrication,
and of course, lengthens the overall production time. We have to re-establish a solid
baseline for our planning asap, and at some point changes cannot be accommodated
anymore.
Critically, we have to establish a baseline for safe operation of the JPL band 6 chains
(JPL’s requests on the tuning of these chains are not compliant with the LO S/S safe
operation philosophy as established in 2004, and require software modification). The
delay in achieving consensus in this question does have impact on the LO schedule.
Needless to emphasize that – as in the previous reports – the LO S/S AIV schedule
is driven by the late arrival of the LSU models.
7.2 Key issues critical for progress
• The thermal analysis of ESA/ESTEC is still pending, including the final decision
about the FHWOH/V SVM interface temperature. We proceed on the baseline of
the WBS-SID but with an assumed interface temperature of 10°C as discussed
with Carsten Scharmberg.
• Manpower is critical at MPS and KOSMA.
7.3 Schedule
Subject to the decision of ESA/industry concerning the open SVM interface
temperature issue the schedule is as follows:
1. one WBS-FM ready for ICU pre-tests 29/08-02/09
2. decision WBO SVM interface temperature 05/09
3. TRR-FM 28/09
8. HRS
Prepared by: Alain Cross
The activities concerning HRS were very limited during August due to vacations.
However, the activity has restarted.
For HRS_H
We have worked on the reports for EMC and TV test and the preparation of related
NCRs.
On the 24 th of August we have performed Physical measurements: mass, CdG, MoI
HRS test equipment is now reinstalled to continue detailed testing.
We have continued the testing of samplers for the second model and are processing

ANNEX #2
the NCRs according to the decision of the telecon of August 23.
The live test for samplers and GaAs is nearly finished and we will perform the
required testing on the samples during the following weeks.
Future activities:
Detailed testing of the HRS_H is planned this week and then some repair was
agreed.
Vibrations are planned for week 37.
DRB shall be planned around end of September/beginning of October.
Next model HRS_V:
IF is ready.
DC/DC converter is ready.
ACS boards are nearly finished but integration and testing cannot start before
burning of the 4 missing samplers.
We try to keep the delivery date as planned, but this will be probably difficult to
achieve.
9. ICU
Regular reports are separately prepared in the course of the regular monthly
Progress Meetings between Carlo Gavazzi Space and ASI to which HIFI has a
standing invitation. The discipline to hold these as physical meetings is being
enforced by ESA, the next one is in planning for 21 September in Milano TBC
HIFI ICU CFM2 delivery from CGS to IFSI is scheduled for cw. 36

ANNEX #2
Also at IFSI a simulator Testcampaign using Luc’s procedure has to be completed for
v. 3.4 of the OBS.
An OBS QM Delivery Review Board is being planned for (first half, TBC) October.
This will be prepared by HIFI (Luc, Peter Roelfsema) in consultation with ESA and
CapTec. At present it is believed that all OBS functionalities except Peak up mode
will have been implemented by end of September.
