Visit us at www.work-microwave.deSatellite Up- and DownconverterSingle / Dual / Triple BandSingle / Dual ChannelS-, C-, X-, Ku-, K(DBS)-, Ka-BandThe satellite up- and downconverters which aredeveloped and manufactured by WORK Microwave, are designed to satisfy the high requirements ofmodern satellite transmission, such as TV uplinks andhigh speed data networks. Analogue transmissionformats are supported as well as digital transmissionformats. For many years, these devices have beenused worldwide for fixed satellite earth stations, satellite news gathering (SNG) vehicles and othermobile or portable applications. The up-and downconvertershave been produced more than 1200 timesso far and customers worldwide appreciate theirreliability and high level of quality.4th Generation – still betterThe 4 th generation, based on our experience and skill,is still better. The synthesizer and oscillator portion inevery satellite converter is the most importantcomponent because it decides the converter'sreliability. For many years WORK Microwave hasbeen developing and manufacturing highsophisticated microwave oscillators and synthesizers, which are used in our converter series as well. Thenew design allows us to reduce the number ofcomponents by more than 30%. In addition, significantimprovements have been made on circuit design. This design results in an AC power consumption oftypically 35 VA / 23 W. This leads to an even higherreliability and longer life time.S-, C-, X-, Ku-, K and Ka-Band coverageThe satellite converter series cover the satellitefrequency bands S-, C-, X-, Ku-, K- and Ka-Band. Theconverters support the standard IF-frequency bands70 ± 20 MHz and/or 140 ± 40 MHz. The conversion isperformed without spectral inversion. Theupconverters offer an increased power output(P 1dB ≥ +10 dBm) in all versions. The units areavailable as single band, dual band or as triple bandconverters (see also next page under “Specials andOEM products).High signal integrityThe extreme low phase noise of the oscillatorsguarantees an excellent signal quality. Low spuriousemissions allow our customers to use the convertersalso in the environments with demandingrequirements, such as high power video uplinks.Sophisticated temperature compensation guaranteesthe stability over a very wide temperature range.Housing optionsThe converters normally are delivered without fansand can be operated in environments, where atminimum 1 RU space for natural ventilation isavailable above each unit. This eliminates the fan aspotential point of failure. For rack installations withoutany space in between the units a fan within theconverter unit is recommended, which forces anairflow from the right side to left side of the units.2012-09-173

dBc/HzOperating and control – easy integrationinto your systemThe converters can be operated via the push buttonson the front panel using self-explanatory displaymenus or via remote control (RS232, RS422/485,TCP/IP over Ethernet). Detailed monitoring of thesystem status and a summary alarm output (dualchange over switch contacts) are provided. For theremote control either ASCII string based commandsas well as addressable, packet based commands areprovided.Remote monitoring and control through SNMP and aWeb browser interface is also available.-50-60-70-80-90-100-110Phase Noise Performance of Up- andDownconverters-12010 Hz 100 Hz 1 kHz 10 kHz 100 kHz 1 MHz 10 MHzCustomized productsFrequencyIn addition to standard products WORK Microwaveoffers custom tailored products and specializedproducts as follows:Modified or smaller housings to fit into yourexisting design for mobile and portableapplications.Extended storage or operating temperature range.Military versions for hostile environment (shock, vibration, humidity). For downconverters: Application specific outputfiltering and automatic level control. Visit us at www.work-microwave.deSatellite Up- and Downconverter,Outdoor VersionSingle / Dual / Triple BandS-, C-, X-, Ku-, K-, Ka-BandWORK Microwave provides it’s proven up- and downconvertersalso in an outdoor housing. The units canbe operated over a temperature range -30°C to 60°C(-22°F to 140°F). In the non-operating modus theysurvive temperatures of -50°C to 80°C (-58°F to176°F) without any damage. Same as the 19'' rackconverter units, they meet the requirements formodern satellite transmission such as TV up-link andhigh-speed data network. Because of their ruggedconstruction and low power consumption, they aremost suitable for fixed satellite earth stations, satellitenews gathering (SNG) vehicles, Fly-Aways and othermobile applications.Technology of the 4th GenerationAll WORK Microwave outdoor converters areequipped with the most modern technology of WORKMicrowaves’s 4 th generation satellite converters. Thisdesign allowed us to reduce the number ofcomponents by more than 30%. In addition significantcircuit improvements were made. This design resultsin an AC power consumption of typically35 VA / 23 W. The housing includes special internalheat dissipation structures, resulting in a completelypassively cooled unit. All this leads to high reliabilityand long lifetime.Outdoor installationWORK Microwave’s outdoor converters are best fit tobe mounted directly to the antenna. They do notrequire additional protection against water. Thehousing provides environmental protection accordingto IP67 (temporary flooding) when all cables areconnected and sealed appropriately. Special environmentalprotection sleeves for the coaxial connectorsallow optimal sealing from the housing to the cable, ifthese sleeves are used to seal the connection of thecable with adhesive shrinking tube or a rubber splicingtape (e.g. of type 3M/Scotch TM 130C). Additionally thehousing should be mounted with the connector sidedown. Alternatively the connector panel can be in avertical position.S-, C-, X-, Ku-, K- and Ka-, single, dual ortriple band coverageWORK Microwave is offering the satellite outdoorconverters as single band units covering S-, C-, X-,Ku-, K-Band and Ka-Band or as Dual or Triple bandunits covering a combination of these frequencybands. They support the standard IF-frequency of70 ± 20 MHz or/and 140 ± 40 MHz. The conversion isperformed without spectral inversion. All WORKMicrowave upconverters offer an increased poweroutput (P 1dB = +10 dBm) in all versions.2012-09-1713

High signal integrityThe extreme low phase noise of the oscillatorsguarantees a very good signal quality. Low spuriousemissions allow using the converters also inenvironments with demanding requirements, like highpower video uplinks. Sophisticated temperaturecompensation guarantees gain stability over the fulltemperature range.Operating and control – easy integrationinto your systemThe converters can be operated via remote control(RS 232, RS422/485). Detailed monitoring of thesystem status and a summary alarm output (dualchange over switch contacts) are provided. For theremote control either ASCII string based commandsas well as addressable, packet based commands areprovided.A separate 19" rack mount remote control unit allowsremote control of one or more units. The front panel ofthis unit is similar to the front panel of the 19” rackmount type.Customized productsIn addition to standard products WORK Microwaveoffers custom tailored products and specializedproducts as follows:Modified or smaller housingsDifferent IF or RF frequencyCustomized M&C interface and control syntaxExtended storage or operating temperature rangeMilitary versions for hostile environment (shock, vibration, humidity)Long term stability 10 -7 / yearOutput power +10 dBm (1 dB compression point)Low spurious emissions < -80 dBm at full gain(high performance series)Adjustable equalizerDigital gain compensationOperating temperature range -30°C to 60°C(-22°F to 140°F), storage temperature -50°C to80°C (-58°F to 140°F)Remote control through RS232 and RS422/485(2-wire or 4-wire bus) interfacesPacket command syntax supports RS485 bussystems and allows addressed operationSummary alarm output (dual change over switchcontacts) and transmit mute inputIP 67 protected housingCE compliant3 years warrantyOrder informationFor the Outdoor version only the High Performancetype is available due to environmental conditionswhich require the extended temperature range.Open questions, demo unitsIf you need more information about WORKMicrowave’s 4 th satellite converter generation or if youwould like to have a demo unit, please contact us viae-mail: sales@work-microwave.de or call us. Customers worldwide appreciate theirreliability and high level of quality. These types of dualchannel, shared oscillator converters can be used insystems, where an accurate phase relationship isrequired between two converter channels, as it is e.g.the case for monopulse tracking system downconversion.Operating and controlThe converters can be operated via the push buttonson the front panel using self-explanatory displaymenus or via remote control (RS232, RS422/485,TCP/IP over Ethernet).Detailed monitoring of the system status and a summaryalarm output (dual change over switch contacts)are provided. For the remote control either ASCIIstring based commands as well as addressable, packet based commands are provided.Housing optionsThe converters normally are delivered without fansand can be operated in environments, where atminimum 1 RU space for natural ventilation isavailable above each unit. This eliminates the fan aspotential point of failure. Visit us at www.work-microwave.deSynthesized BlockUp- and DownconverterS, C, X, Ku, K, Ka-BandThe satellite up- and downconverters developed andmanufactured by WORK Microwave are designed tomeet the requirements of modern satellitetransmission, like TV uplink and high speed datanetworks. Analogue transmission formats aresupported as well as digital transmission formats. Formany years these devices have been used worldwidein fixed satellite earth stations as well as in satellitenews gathering (SNG) vehicles and Fly-Aways andother mobile or portable applications. These kind ofconverters have been built for more than 1200 timesso far. Customers worldwide appreciate their reliabilityand high level of quality.4th Generation – still betterThe 4 th generation, based on our experience and skill,is still better. The synthesizer and oscillator portion inevery satellite converter is the most importantcomponent because it decides the converter'sreliability. For many years WORK Microwave hasbeen developing and manufacturing highsophisticated microwave oscillators and synthesizerswhich are used in our converter series as well. Thenew design allows us to reduce the number ofcomponents by more than 30%. In addition, significantimprovements have been made on circuit design. This design results in an AC power consumption oftypically 35 VA / 27 W. This leads to an even higherreliability and longer life time.High signal integrityThe extreme low phase noise of the oscillatorsguarantees an excellent signal quality. Low spuriousemissions allow our customers to use the convertersalso in the environments with demandingrequirements, such as high power video uplinks.Sophisticated temperature compensation guaranteesthe stability over a very wide temperature range.Block Converter with frequency synthesizerIn contrast to block converters with fixed or switchable LO these converters include a tunable LO with10 Hz step size. The frequency bandwidth is selectedto achieve low spurious emissions. These propertiesallow wideband frequency coverage with only oneunit, where other concepts with fixed block convertersrequire several different block converter modules.Housing optionsThe converters normally are delivered without fansand can be operated in environments, where atminimum 1 RU space for natural ventilation isavailable above each unit. This eliminates the fan aspotential point of failure. For rack installations withoutany space in between the units a fan within theconverter unit is recommended, which forces anairflow from the right side to left side of the units.2012-09-17 27

The converters can be operated via the push buttonson the front panel using self-explanatory displaymenus or via remote control (RS232, RS422/485,TCP/IP over Ethernet). Detailed monitoring of thesystem status and a summary alarm output (dualchange over switch contacts) are provided. For theremote control either ASCII string based commandsas well as addressable, packet based commands areprovided.Remote monitoring and control through SNMP and aWeb browser interface is also available.Customized productsIn addition to standard products WORK Microwaveoffers custom tailored products and specializedproducts as follows:Modified or smaller housings to fit into your ACpower switch on the front panelExisting design for mobile and portableapplications.Different IF or RF frequency bands, Ka-Band(28GHz) version is under development.Customized M&C interface and control syntax.Extended storage or operating temperature range.Military versions for hostile environment (shock, vibration, humidity).Key featuresExtreme low power consumption maximum35 VA / 27 W (single band unit) 37 VA / 29 W(triple band units)Extreme low phase noise (< -50 dBc/Hz @ 10 Hz)Long- term stability 10 -7 / yearOutput power +10 dBm (1 dB compression point)Low spurious emissions < -80 dBm at full gain(high performance series)Automatic reference recognition (5 and 10 MHz)Digital gain compensationOperating temperature range either -30 °C to60 °C (-22 °F to 140 °F) or 0°C to 50 °C (32 °F to122 °F)Remote control through RS232, RS422/485(2-wire or 4-wire) interfaces. The picture above shows astand-alone unit. The input of this unit can be connected to the IFoutput of the downconverter. The picture below shows a block diagram of theapplication specific ALC Filter Amplifier. The signal isbandpass filtered on the input as well as on theoutput. Both bandpass filters are identical. The pictures on the next page show typical amplitudefrequency responses of such filters. The overall filtercharacteristic of the complete unit results from aseries connection of the two identical filters, doublingall attenuation values in dB, which means that e.g. astop-band suppression of 50 dB for one filter results ina overall stop-band suppression for the complete unitof about 100 dB (for the same frequency point). In between these filters a variable gain stage allowsadjustment of the signal level. A small portion of theoutput signal level is coupled to an RMS detector.A digitally implemented control algorithm using amicroprocessor allows to select a specified outputlevel and keeps the output level constant, even if theinput signal varies within the allowed level range. Theoperational parameters of the ALC amplifier can beconfigured from the front panel processor as well asfrom remote. Redundancy Switch 1:1 for IP ModemsRSCI1This version of a WORK Microwave 1:1 RedundancySwitch is specifically designed for IP modems and IPdemodulators. Besides this type also a standard1:1 Redundancy Switch RSCM1 is available, whichcan be used for modulators, demodulators andmodems with ASI transport stream inputs and outputs. The 1:1 Redundancy Switch RSCI1 includes for theGigabit Ethernet traffic interfaces a special type ofform C (SPDT) Ethernet switch with RJ45 interfaces,to allow switchover from one IP modem or IPdemodulator to the redundant one. This operatestogether with MAC address announcing methods, initiated automatically by the Gigabit Ethernet trafficinterfaces: The IP Modulator who detects that a port isa getting active (after switchover) sends a broadcastmessage that the MAC Address has changed.Equipment receiving this message, typically the nextrouter, needs to react to this message and update itsARP resolution table. This is in IPv4 an extension toRFC 826 and is called Gratuitous ARP. For IPv6 it isdefined by RFC 4861, clause 7.2.6 and is calledUnsolicited Neighbor Advertisement. The downtimeafter switchover is approximately less than 5 sec, typically only 2-3 sec and depends mainly on theEthernet auto negotiation time. Both IP modems or IP demodulators need to beconfigured in the same way, have different MACAddresses, but the same IP Address. For the RF transmit signal a transfer relay is included. For the RF receive signal also a transfer relay orpreferably a signal splitter is available, which can bemounted externally to the unit. For L-Band receivesignals also a special signal splitter with integratedswitch is available, which allows to provide DC and a22 kHz tone signal always from the active unit to theLNB.The 1:1 Redundancy Switch accepts alarm signalsfrom the two IP devices. The unit can operate inautomatic mode, were an automatic switchover to thestand by unit is performed upon detection of an alarmof the active unit. For configurations including a splitter on the receivesignal side, where both IP devices can receive the RFsignal, also monitoring of the receive conditions ofboth units is implemented. A switchover is performedin case that, with automatic mode enabled, the activeunit indicates a non consistent receive problemcompared to the standby unit. Also a manual switchover to the standby unit can beinitiated. The units can be controlled from the front panel orremotely via RS 232, RS422/485 or Ethernet.
