Teaches properstructuring of security systems. Explains print queues, disk management, and otherlocal area network (<strong>LAN</strong>) issues. Presents concerns and issues for the purchase andinstall<strong>at</strong>ion of hardware and software upgrades. Can be taught using any networkoper<strong>at</strong>ing system or a range of oper<strong>at</strong>ing systems as a delivery tool.This course teaches the principles of <strong>LAN</strong> management and the skills necessary tomaintain and manage a network. It will provide an overview of <strong>LAN</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ions, theimportance of servers, backup, security, user service, and acquisition andinstall<strong>at</strong>ion in <strong>LAN</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ions, the role of <strong>LAN</strong> managers in these functions, andother topics rel<strong>at</strong>ed to server and client management and performance. The coursewill help prepare the student to function as a <strong>LAN</strong> manager and/or <strong>LAN</strong> systemadministr<strong>at</strong>or. This course focuses on the management of <strong>LAN</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ing systemsincluding user and group management, file systems, print services, and systembackup. If you miss class, you can c<strong>at</strong>ch up by followingalong in the syllabus, completing your assignments and discussions for th<strong>at</strong> week.Students are required to log in to Blackboard <strong>at</strong> least once each week (see my gradingpolicy below for l<strong>at</strong>e assignments and discussion posts). Your particip<strong>at</strong>ion in theAssignments and Discussions are your <strong>at</strong>tendance for the independent parts of thisclass. Note: Any discussions th<strong>at</strong> are postedth<strong>at</strong> have copied directly from an Internet or other, source, and will receive 0 points. Allwork must be the student’s own work.Quizzes/Exams – Quizzes will be posted in every week. These afford “particip<strong>at</strong>ion”points in th<strong>at</strong> you are allowed to take the quiz multiple times. See the quizzes due d<strong>at</strong>eposted in the last page of the syllabus.Assignments – Lab Assignments have been selected for the student to performindependently. Students will post the results of the labs in the Assignments section ofBlackboard each week. Internet access is required for the labs and exams. An“open” lab is maintained <strong>at</strong> the college if the student is not able to do the labs <strong>at</strong> home.Assignment over the m<strong>at</strong>erial covered in class th<strong>at</strong> week must be posted inBlackboard before the class meets again or unless otherwise specified inBlackboard. L<strong>at</strong>e posts will be marked down by 1 point for each week they arel<strong>at</strong>e. Assignments are graded twice during the course – once <strong>at</strong> Mid-Term and again <strong>at</strong>the end of the course.Labs – Your text comes with MOAC Virtual Lab access instructions inside the envelopeon the back of the pack. You will be required to establish a Windows Live ID account inorder to access the labs. You have 15 hours and 50 minutes available in which tocomplete the labs I have assigned. The Access code you are provided should only beused to initially set up the account on Microsoft’s IT Academy’s site, you will then useyour email address and login th<strong>at</strong> you cre<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> registr<strong>at</strong>ion to log in and access yourmodules and labs under My Learning. Note th<strong>at</strong> the program requires Internet Explorer6 or above (surprise). If you don’t have it, you can use one of the computers in the OpenLab. Please check with the Lab Manager to determine when the lab is available. Do notspend more than the provided time on each lab or you will run out of time to completeall of the labs. Please periodically save a screen shot to demonstr<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> you areworking your way through the labs.
