From the Desk of Jay Schmelter President of the Board _Dear Chesterfield Day School community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support of Chesterfield Day School. Your dedication has helped the school to continue to grow and succeed during the 2010-2011 school year and beyond. When I reminisce over the 2010-2011 school year, I am constantly and continually amazed by this wonderful community. Our parents are enthusiastic and passionate, our faculty is skilled and experienced, and our administrative staff is tireless and hard-working. Chesterfield Day School is clearly a great place for students, but this is no accident. Everything we do, we do to advance and support our students. As President of the Board, the best reward I can imagine is watching our graduates move on to the next phase of their lives with success and excitement. Our most recent graduates have done just that. I would like to thank Alicia Noddings for her work as the Interim Head of School during the 2010-2011 school year. Alicia has been a wonderful asset for many years, serving in many capacities (parent, principal and interim head). She is a true professional with a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge, and we are very lucky to have her as a part of our School. I would also like to welcome Matt Virgil to the Chesterfield Day School community. Matt has been named as our new Head of School and began his tenure in the summer of 2011. During the search process, I was most impressed by Matt’s qualifications, professionalism and enthusiasm. I am very excited to support Matt as he leads CDS into our next era. One constant that I hope we can all embrace is change that leads to continuous improvement as we continually work to fulfill the Chesterfield Day School mission. The Board of Trustees charges Matt Virgil, the administrative team and the faculty with continually looking for ways that we can improve how the school serves our students and families. From the Desk of Alicia Noddings Interim Head of School Dear Chesterfield Day School community, As I reflect upon the 2010-2011 school year, I think of a year filled with collaboration at CDS: not only in our classrooms, but throughout the school. The year began with our Board approving the School’s next long-term strategic plan, constructed thoughtfully over several months with input from parents, Board members, administration, and faculty. Our community then continued its strategic thinking with the exciting opportunity to select a new Head of School. This effort required tremendous time and dedication from our Search Committee, Board, faculty and staff, and others. The search culminated in November 2010 with the selection of Matt Virgil as the next Head of CDS. While this completed the work of the Search Committee, it was only the beginning of our next collaborative phase as the School’s staff and Board worked with Matt extensively throughout the winter and spring to help him know the School inside and out, so that he could formally join CDS in June “hitting the ground running”. Summer was then filled with the collaboration of our new administrative team, including not only Matt, but new Director of Development Theresa Fleck and new Director of Admissions Julie Bryzeal. The work of this exceptional team propelled us into August, when we welcomed back another exceptional team, our dedicated faculty, and began the exciting cycle of a new academic year. It is important as we look back on 2010-2011 to say thank you to all of the people in our community whose hard work, dedication, and support make it possible for CDS to prepare to celebrate its 50th year of providing a personalized education of unparalleled excellence for students of diverse backgrounds. Thank you to our Board of Trustees, our talented faculty, the administrative and staff team, and most of all, to our families, present, past, and future, for your commitment to CDS and faith in the educational approach which produces graduates who are ready to lead the way toward the future, using heart, head, and hands. As the national economy continues to struggle, our donors have shown continued generosity with their time, talent, and treasure, giving us both a successful Annual Fund and Fantasm auction. This success was due in great part to Board of Trustees member and CDS parent Kathy Wunderlich, who served as our Interim Director of Development from January to May of 2011. I would like to say a special thank you to Kathy for all of the time, creativity, and energy that she put into our development program, with results demonstrating the incredible commitment that our families and other donors continue to have for CDS. In closing, I would like to say a personal thank you for the incredible support that I received during the past year from the entire CDS community as I had the privilege of serving as Interim Head of School. I am delighted to welcome Matt as Head and am impressed with both his vision for the exciting future that is ahead for CDS and his understanding of the CDS mission, philosophy, and community. The 2011-2012 school year will be filled with both opportunities to continue to do what CDS does best and to celebrate all that CDS has done for students over its incredible 50 year history: providing an exceptional educational environment which encourages students to excel, supports them as they grow, and recognizes the unique gifts that each of them has to share.
