The American Red Cross was founded on the generosity and capacity of the
human spirit – to act with humanity in our communities every day. During
the past year we have seen just that – the strength of our volunteers and
community partners working hard to alleviate suffering and provide
lifesaving programs and services. This Annual Report highlights the work of
our exceptional volunteers and partners and all of the great things we are
accomplishing every day.

The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area had a tremendously busy
year serving more local clients and reaching out to more local community
members than in any previous year. We saw a number of local disasters this
year including house fires, winter ice storms, spring flooding, and a tornado that touched down in Muscatine and
Louisa counties. All of the disasters the Red Cross responds to, whether they make headlines or not, can have a
potentially devastating impact on the lives they touch. That is why our dedicated volunteers are on call 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Without these volunteers, our work would not be possible.
During the past year, we continued to actively work to develop new ways to strengthen our relationship with the
African American community. The American Red Cross Diversity Committee initiated a comprehensive and
aggressive marketing campaign to recruit additional volunteers and raise awareness about Red Cross programs and
services. Our chapter was also selected to participate in an International Services pilot program. It focuses on outreach
to diverse populations, youth and adult volunteer involvement, and increasing awareness about Family Tracing and
International Humanitarian Law programs and services.
We are also proud to report that our local chapter was named one of 80 highly-performing chapters in the United States
by the National American Red Cross. A total of 805 chapters were evaluated in 2006. To achieve this outstanding
designation, the chapter was scored on a comprehensive set of performance criteria through its Chapter Performance
Standards system. This is truly a remarkable accomplishment to celebrate.
We could not have accomplished any of this without the generosity of the Quad Cities area community. We thank the
countless individuals and organizations listed in this report who supported our efforts in the last year. We not only
appreciate your generosity, we depend on it.
Looking to the future, I think we can all agree that there will never be a day when natural disasters can be avoided. As
the need for preparedness becomes more evident, the role of the American Red Cross is more vital and significant than
ever. The Red Cross is an integral part of America today, and it will be tomorrow because of the outstanding support of
our communities. Thank you for supporting the American Red Cross.

In an emergency, time is not on your side - but the American Red Cross is.
American Red Cross disaster volunteers stand ready 24 hours a day to respond to
house fires, blizzards, chemical spills, tornadoes, and floods. These extraordinary
volunteers help comfort people who have been displaced from their homes by
providing immediate emergency needs like food, water, clothing, first aid, and
mental health counseling. Last year, the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities
Area provided assistance to 441 people after a disaster threatened to destroy their
lives. In addition, Red Cross volunteer instructors trained 4,813 youth and adults
in family disaster preparedness, enabling them to minimize the impact of disasters
on their lives and leave them better prepared when disaster happens.
In June, the American Red Cross began to use an innovative new technology known as the National Notification
Network (3n). The 3n system allows the Red Cross to more rapidly mobilize volunteers during a disaster. Within 30
minutes or less, the automated system notifies 400 disaster volunteers via internet or phone and determines their
availability to respond to the disaster. The 3n system can also categorize volunteers according to their specialties,
enabling Disaster Services to respond with a targeted team to any disaster. Th 3n system was purchased through a
generous grant from the Scott County Regional Authority.
Just days after the tornado hit Fruitland,
Iowa, Sue Riley saw Red Cross disaster
volunteers walking down the street, making
their way through the debris, to talk to
homeowners. Sue was one of many Fruitland
residents that received help from the Red Cross.
After talking with volunteers, Sue was given a
Red Cross client assistance card to help cover her
most immediate needs.
“I wouldn’t have even thought to call the Red Cross. I’ve donated, but I’ve
never been on the receiving end and I didn’t even know they did that. The Red
Cross took away the ‘Oh my gosh, what am I going to do about money when I
don’t get paid for another week.’ The Red Cross was very helpful and the people
were very nice. It’s a great program, I’ll keep donating!” Sue’s wondered how
people have gotten help in other disasters. Now she has seen how the process works.
“They get it fast! You get help right away.”

Heroes don’t necessarily wear capes – but heroes do save lives. The
American Red Cross is the community’s leader in training heroes to lead safer,
healthier lives and change the outcomes of potentially fatal situations. In the past
year, the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area trained 17,325 individuals
in lifesaving CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In
partnership with community aquatic facilities, 12,576 individuals were trained in
learn-to-swim, lifeguarding, and water safety instruction classes.
Since 2002, the Red
Cross has trained 427 members of
Laborers’ Local Union No. 309. Brad
Long, Business Manager, says, “Safety is our
number one concern and the Red Cross training
programs have exceeded our expectations as a partner
in meeting our safety requirements.”
Labor Union members have used the skills
they learned in First Aid and CPR training to assist
co-workers on the job. Recently, a worker suffered
sudden cardiac arrest and his co-worker, who
completed Red Cross training, knew the proper steps
to take and was able to assist him until paramedics
arrived.

30 years. Giving blood is a good
thing to do - it can save lives.”

During Red Cross Month in March, Family
Safety Day was held at Northpark Mall, providing
thousands of Quad City residents with free health
screenings, demonstrations, and information. In
September, a health and safety fair was also held at
Century Woods Apartment Complex in Rock Island,
providing residents access to free products and
services.
Our chapter also educated 1,752 people in
HIV/AIDS awareness and education and provided
512 residents with free blood pressure checks to
prevent stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney
failure.

A patient’s need for blood knows no borders. Operating the largest, most
advanced research laboratory in the world, the American Red Cross is the largest
single supplier of blood in the nation. Blood and blood components are used in
emergency services, in the
treatment of cancer patients, for people with blood disorders, and
in other lifesaving treatments that benefit countless individuals
across the country.
With the help of the Heart of America Blood Services
Region, volunteers helped collect 3,525 units of blood in
Henry and Mercer counties. Every day, nine units of blood are
collected in our communities, potentially saving the lives of
27 people.

Dear Red Cross,
I just wanted to send a quick message thanking the QC Chapter
of the Red Cross, and particularly the AFES case workers, for assisting
my family with our recent AFES case. Unfortunately, this is the second
deployment where I have lost a grandparent and have been unable to
attend their funeral. However, the Red Cross has been there for us each
time. Having served as an AFES case worker there in the Quad Cities, I
have had the experience of being at both ends of those messages now, and
don’t know what the service members would do without you. The Red
Cross makes the process virtually seamless and I continue to shout your
praises to anyone who will listen.

The American Red Cross was born on the battlefields of the Civil War and the
tradition of providing emergency services to our military members and their families
continues today. Last year, the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area provided
emergency services for 527 members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
The Red Cross helps send emergency messages regarding the death or serious illness
of a family member, the birth of a child, or other family emergency. The Red Cross
also has licensed mental health professionals to provide guidance, information,
referrals, and other needs for military personnel and their families. The Red Cross is
the only organization to facilitate emergency communications for military members.

Red Cross International Services supports humanitarian relief around the
world by tracing relatives lost during disasters or wars; educating people about
international humanitarian law; helping strengthen other national societies by sharing
expertise and resources; and responding to appeals for relief assistance in armed
conflicts and natural disasters. The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area is
participating in an International Services pilot program for chapters. The program
aims to strengthen the position of chapters in the United States as a part of the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in their communities.
The Quad Cities chapter is focusing on tcommunications, fundraising,
outreach to diverse populations, and youth, staff, and volunteer involvement in
service projects and delivery. Through these efforts, the Red Cross trained one
worker as an instructor in International Humanitarian Law and educated local high
school students about the Red Cross Measles and Malaria programs.

When someone asks, “Can you help?”, Red Cross volunteers answer,
“Yes we can.” The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area relies on
volunteers to help people plan and prepare for emergencies, provide training in
lifesaving skills, assist victims of disasters, connect families, or simply lend a
helping hand to members of the community. The work of the Red Cross is
done locally by 802 adult and youth volunteers.
Although the tornado hit his hometown, Red Cross disaster
volunteer Mike Phillips said it wouldn’t have mattered where the disaster
was - he knew he needed to be there. “It’s so important to be there as soon
as you can to talk to these folks.”
After a tornado hit southeastern Iowa on June 1 st , Mike spent two
weeks in Muscatine, Grandview and Fruitland, working with the
disaster assessment team and then conducting client casework
interviews. “It’s always a good thing to volunteer and to give back to the
community. It seems like no matter what you do [in life], there is
always something you can do to help someone else.”
Mike started giving back to the community as a Red Cross
volunteer after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and has since
been an active disaster volunteer. “The most rewarding part of working
as a disaster volunteer is being able to sit and comfort them (the
clients) and make them feel safe. I tear up sometimes when I talk to
them. You need to reach into your heart and understand what they are
going through. It’s important to be there and give them a hug or
whatever it takes.”
In the past year, 13,199 youth were trained with vital skills to care
responsibly for children, stay safe at home alone, be safe near the water, handle
basic emergencies, and use proper handwashing techniques. Red Cross Clubs are
active at Jordan Catholic School, Sherrard High School, United Township High
School, Logan Elementary School,
Bettendorf Middle School, Assumption
High School, and a peer educator group
at Bettendorf High School.
In addition, the Red Cross hosted
three Kid’s K.A.M.P.’s (Kids Are More
Prepared) for children between the ages
of five and 12. Kid’s K.A.M.P.
participants benefited from a variety of
health and safety activities, ranging from
how to respond to approaches from
strangers to how to make healthy snack
choices.
