Williamson Gay and Lesbian Studies Course Development Grant (1997)<br />

A competitive $4,000 course development grant from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina’s<br />

Williamson Fund to develop SOWO 330: Human Sexuality and Sexual Identity, a course on<br />

human sexuality, for the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Work. The first graduate student at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

North Carolina at Chapel Hill awarded this grant since its inception in 1994.<br />

Teaching Assistant Technology Supplement Award (1997)<br />

A competitive $1,000 grant to support the innovative use <strong>of</strong> technology in classroom teaching,<br />

awarded by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina Graduate <strong>School</strong>. Award supported the use <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Internet in facilitating class communication, research, and student learning in SOWO 330:<br />

Victims’ Programs Planner, Governor’s Crime Commission (1998-99)<br />

Assisted in the development and implementation <strong>of</strong> victim assistance programs in North<br />

Carolina. Duties included staffing the Victims Programs Committee and the Governor’s Task<br />

Force on Domestic Violence, providing support for criminal justice and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it victim service<br />

agencies in the program planning and grant application processes, and preparing policy<br />

documents on victims’ issues in North Carolina. Required strong organization skills, writing and<br />

speaking ability, and an understanding <strong>of</strong> the dynamics <strong>of</strong> victims’ issues.<br />

Field Placement, CycleBusters, Family and Children’s Services, Wake County Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Social</strong> Services (1994)<br />

Block placement in program for teen mothers receiving AFDC and at risk <strong>of</strong> dropping out <strong>of</strong><br />

school. Assignments included creating a training curriculum for new student mentors, creating<br />

and leading a workshop for teens on rape and sexual assault, case management and advocacy for<br />

clients, and researching funding opportunities. Supervised by field instructor Linda B. Johnson,<br />

MSW, DSS Program Manager, and faculty liaison Evelyn Williams, MSW.<br />

Information Specialist, National AIDS Hotline (1992-93)<br />

Counselor on national nonpr<strong>of</strong>it health hotline. Duties included providing information and<br />

education about HIV and AIDS, crisis intervention counseling, and <strong>of</strong>fering appropriate<br />

referrals.<br />

Assistant Area Coordinator, Douglass College Residence Life Program (1990-92)<br />

On-call residence life staff member responsible for over 800 undergraduates living in two<br />

dormitories. Duties consisted <strong>of</strong> counseling and advising student residents and supervising<br />

building maintenance. Required crisis intervention, mediation, and student advising skills.<br />

Crisis Counselor, Women Against Rape (1988-89)<br />

Full-time position in nonpr<strong>of</strong>it agency serving three counties in southern New Jersey. Duties<br />

included counseling clients on hotline and in individual sessions; advocating with health care<br />

providers, law enforcement, and the legal system; writing position papers; public speaking and<br />

community education; and preparing statistical reports for local, state and federal funding<br />

agencies.<br />

Principal Investigator, Harvesting the Grapevine: Collecting LGBTQ Success Stories to<br />

Change Campus Policies (March 2007-July 2008) Oral history project designed to gather and<br />

publish stories from faculty members, administrators, students, and other staff at educational<br />

institutions who were successful in recent campaigns (i.e., in the last 10 years) to have nondiscrimination<br />

policies based on sexual orientation or gender expression, or domestic partner


enefits policies, adopted by their institutions. Supported by a grant from the American<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Scholars in the amount <strong>of</strong> $20,000.<br />

Principal Investigator, Multicultural Scholars Program in <strong>Social</strong> Work (September 2005 – May<br />

2009) Intervention designed to improve academic performance, retention, and graduation rates <strong>of</strong><br />

first generation college students, students <strong>of</strong> color, and students transferring from community<br />

colleges who show great potential and intend to major in social work. Supported by a grant from<br />

an external funder in the amount <strong>of</strong> $55,000.<br />

Principal Investigator, Stress and coping in gay and lesbian students in field placement (June<br />

2003) Analysis <strong>of</strong> stress and coping data gathered in semi-structured interviews with 30 lesbian<br />

and gay students and graduates from social work programs in one Southern state. Supported by a<br />

grant from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alabama Research Advisory Committee in the amount <strong>of</strong> $5,000.<br />

Principal Investigator, Gay and lesbian students in field placement: An exploratory study.<br />

(January 2001–June 2002) Independent developmental research project on the experiences <strong>of</strong><br />

gay and lesbian social work students in field placements in one Southern state, based on<br />

qualitative interviews with graduates and field instructors. Supported by a grant from the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Humanities and <strong>Social</strong> Sciences Research Fund, North Carolina State <strong>University</strong> in the<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> $1,750.<br />

Mental Health in <strong>Kansas</strong> (2005-present). Provide consultation for qualitative analysis <strong>of</strong> group<br />

data.<br />

Principal Investigator, Issues in Research on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender<br />

Populations: Scholars’ Experiences with Institutional Review Boards (January 2003-2004). Led<br />

qualitative research project on the experiences <strong>of</strong> social work scholars who do research with<br />

LGBT populations regarding the responses to their proposals from their institutional review<br />

boards. Supervised a team <strong>of</strong> social work doctoral students.<br />

Research Associate, Opportunities for Families Fund (OFF) Evaluation, Human Services<br />

Research and Design Lab, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Fall, 1994-Spring, 1997)<br />

Participated in a multi-method evaluation <strong>of</strong> four programs receiving OFF grants from Z. Smith<br />

Reynolds Foundation. Duties included managing the institutional review process; conducting onsite<br />

interviews with program staff, participant families, and local community members;<br />

transcribing, coding, analyzing and interpreting interview data; producing progress reports for<br />

the foundation and the program sites; and coordinating technical assistance to program sites.<br />

Researcher on an intervention research project funded by the Center for Disease Control (CDC),<br />

which used public health education <strong>of</strong> 8th and 9th graders and county service providers to<br />

address violence in teen dating relationships in Johnston County. Designed to strengthen<br />

quantitative research skills, duties included creating a testable hypothesis regarding service<br />

provider data and analyzing the data using SAS and FoxPro s<strong>of</strong>tware. Supervised by Dr. Vangie<br />
