A Word from our President
ExTRAORDINARy SERvICE
THROuGHOuT CONGREGATIONAL AND
COMMuNITy LIFE
Our congregation is
blessed with a breadth of
stellar programs that further
our mission. Led by Rabbi
Perry Netter, and supported
by Cantor Mark Spindler
and a dedicated staff, our
programs succeed at such
a high level because of a
positive, effective, sacred
partnership of our clergy
and staff with lay leaders
and volunteers who are
committed to and passionate about sustaining the vitality of
our synagogue and mission.
Our congregant support and leadership are so substantial
and extensive that we recognized and honored many of our
lay leaders and volunteers during three Shabbatot. On June
16, we honored our minyannaires who ensure our twice-daily
minyan, our honors coordinators and gabbaim who ensure
that our services go smoothly, and our greeters who ensure
that our services are welcoming and accessible to all. On June
22, we honored volunteers who have distinguished themselves
through their work on committees, in office and building
support, and through contribution of their time and expertise to
the synagogue. On July 13, we honored our Kesher volunteers
and leaders, who devote themselves to caring for our members
with illness, frailty, disability and loss.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our lay leaders and
volunteers for selflessly giving so much of themselves for the
greater good of our sacred community.
Standing out for extraordinary, exemplary and inspirational
service throughout congregational and community life are the
recipients of our two major synagogue awards: Irv Sellers
(Kaufman Award) and Judith and Jonathan Epstein (Keter
Torah Award).
Irv Sellers, a past president, has served Temple Beth Tzedek
from the first days of the merger as its first co-chair of the
Ritual Committee, as a vice president, and at present, as cochair
of the Kesher program. In these significant positions, Irv
has put in his heart and soul, and drawn upon his substantial
reservoir of wisdom and compassion to lead us beautifully to
help ensure that we merged harmoniously and that we tended
to the bikur cholim needs of every member. Irv and his beloved
wife, Doris, founded and chaired the Kesher meal delivery
program, providing TBT-catered Shabbat and shiva meals
during times of loss, hospitalization, birth and adoption. Irv
has also served as an active member of Brotherhood, the Rabbi
and Cantor Evaluation committees, the Finance Committee,
the Catering Committee, the High Holidays Subcommittee
and the Cantor’s Gala Committee. Irv has also enhanced our

A Word from our President continued...
Shabbat services by serving as a greeter, stepping in to lead davening when
the Cantor is away, and giving a d’var Torah.
Judith and Jonathan Epstein have exceptional qualities and abilities, and
are extraordinary in their dedication to our congregation and community.
Judith has served as secretary, co-chair and chair of our Ritual Committee
and chair of our High Holidays Subcommittee with great proficiency. She
coordinates haftarot assignments, honors coordinators and gabbaim. She is
a member of the Rabbi and Cantor Evaluation committees. Judith enhances
our services by leading davening, reading Torah, chanting Haftarah,
serving as honors coordinator and giving words of Torah.
Jonathan has served as synagogue vice president, treasurer,
parliamentarian, endowment funds assessment leader and Ethics
Committee member. Jonathan is currently Brotherhood president, a
member of our Board of Trustees, and chair of our Publicity and Shofar
Committee. Jonathan has added vibrancy to Brotherhood and significantly
upgraded our Shofar publication. Notably, Jonathan has stepped up for
major leadership of the Kadimah School as the newly installed Kadimah
co-president at this time of great need.
Jonathan and Judith volunteer at Federation Super Sunday, and along
with their wonderful children, Hailey and Gabriel, volunteer at the Kesher
Mincha at Weinberg program and Outstretched Arm programs.
Those who have served with Jonathan, Judith and Irv know that they
embody Jewish values and hold the highest standards throughout their lives.
We are fortunate to have the benefit of their tireless and caring leadership
and extensive expertise elevating the quality, strength and richness of our
community.
Yasher koach and kol ha-kavod Jonathan, Judith and Irv and all our
lay leaders and volunteers. Please forgive my inadvertent omission of any
volunteers. I will do my best to provide recognition throughout the year in
our Kol Ha-kavod column.
Thank you so much.
Janet Gunner
from tHe CHoLent Pot
During the first and second
centuries of the common era, there
were three communal authorities
in Israel: the priest, who was the
religious functionary responsible
for the sacred service in the Temple;
the political leader, who represented
the Jewish community to the Roman
authorities; and the Torah sage, who
was the interpreter of divine wisdom
and spiritual guide for the generation.
Each in their own way, in their own
dominion, played a vital function
in maintaining social order in an age of chaos and change. Rabbi
Shimon described each with the metaphor of wearing a crown:
Rabbi Shimon said: There are three crowns: the crown
of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of
kingship. And the crown of a good name is superior to
them all (Avot 4:17).
Notice that Rabbi Shimon adds a fourth crown. It is not that
Rabbi Shimon can’t count; what Rabbi Shimon taught is that there
is something greater than the power and influence that derives
from one’s station in life. More important than competence and
success in one’s career is one’s character. At the end of the day,
integrity, honesty, kindness, goodness and more are what remain of
a person’s reputation.
In our age, we apparently must add one other communal
authority to Rabbi Shimon’s list: the college football coach. I am
stunned that a ubiquitous conversation across media lines is the
2
Awards for extraordinary synagogue and
community service and leadership
Recipients of TBT Keter Torah award
question of what the scandalous events at Penn State will do to Joe
Paterno’s legacy. He was, after all, the winningest coach in history.
As a result, he was the most important and powerful person in
the Penn State universe. The football program generated millions
of dollars of revenue for the university and elevated Penn State’s
profile as an institution of higher learning. Once again, we have
evidence of how much is sacrificed in our culture for the sake of
victory on the gridiron.
When sports and news commentators ask the question, what does
this do to Joe Pa’s legacy, I confess that I find the question offensive
in the extreme. There should be no question about Paterno’s legacy.
Benjamin Franklin said, “It takes many good deeds to build a good
reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” A friend of mine once
told me that when she was a young teenager, her father counseled her
that, “you can lose your virginity and your reputation only once.”
To ask the question about Paterno’s patina of saintliness after the
revelations of his cover-up of multiple felonies committed by one
of his subordinates is an obscenity. To worry more about Paterno
than the many young men who were violated by Jerry Sandusky
is to participate in and perpetuate the sports idolatry that winning
trumps everything.
This public discussion violates those young men a second
time. The Penn State authorities – including the president of the
university, should the assertions of the Freeh report be tested to be
accurate in a court of law – belong in jail. That is the most fitting
and just legacy of this tragedy. There are fundamental values that
are the bedrock of civilization. Winning over 400 football games is
not one of them.
We’re now in the heat of the summer, and TBT Brotherhood is the
place to be cool.
After a fun outing to watch the Buffalo Bisons baseball game in
June with our TBT Membership Committee, Brotherhood took it easy
in the shade in the July. But we’re ready to start up again in August
and then hit the ground running again in September.
Join us on Aug. 19 for our first Scotch and Steak night, starting at
4 p.m.! That’s right, we’ll have delicious, grilled steaks and yummy
sides, while we take the opportunity to sample some of the finest
scotch, brought to you by our own David Davidson. So take a test
run, try them out and see which ones you like. Learn about the finer
points of scotch, and even how to tell good from, well, not good.
Other drinks will also be provided, of course. Just know your own
limits, and have a great time with your brothers. This event will be
open to everyone.
Then, in September, we’ll be ramping up for
another year of fun. For starters, join us Sept. 9 for our
opening brunch for our year, featuring Rick Zakalik,
TBT member and executive director of the Jewish Community
Center of Greater Buffalo, talking about what’s new at the “J,” what
you may be missing, and what you can expect in the future. Then, a
month later, we’ll have TBT member and Buffalo Bisons President
Jonathan Dandes joining us to talk about the Bisons, the World Series
and baseball in general, while we watch the documentary, “Jews and
Baseball.” And there’s more planned.
Plus, we’ll be ramping up our free weekly coffee service,
Brotherhood to Go, on every Sunday morning when Gesher School is
in session. So come on by, have some “Joe,” shmooze, and help us out,
as we warm the hearts and stomachs of everyone who comes to TBT.
All this means it’s also time to renew your membership with
Brotherhood. Once again, membership is just $25 for the year, and
includes discounted rates on Brotherhood programs(including our
monthly brunches) and special programs in the future that will be
open ONLy to Brotherhood members. So join us and support our
efforts to bring the men of TBT together for social, cultural, spiritual,
social action and other activities, all centered around our Jewish
identity and heritage, and helping our synagogue community to be
strong, caring and vibrant.
As always, I’m available anytime, by phone, email, one-on-one,
carrier pigeon, signal flares, or any means of communication if you
have questions, comments, or suggestions. I look forward to seeing
you at the next Brotherhood event.
until then, we are….
Ladies’ Corner (SISTERHOOD)
At a recent Sisterhood board meeting, the question was asked,
“What is the difference between MERCAZ and MASORTI?”
When there is a question that we wish to answer, we used
to look it up in an encyclopedia or other reference material.
Today, life is much simpler – just google it!
yes, google is a verb as well as a noun!
* “MASORTI, meaning ‘traditional,’ is the Hebrew name
for the movement of Conservative Judaism in Israel. The Masorti
Movement, founded in 1979, is the umbrella organization of
Masorti kehillot (congregations), which foster the practice
of traditional Judaism among Israeli men and women while
embracing modernity. In promoting the combined values of
Conservative Judaism, religious tolerance and Zionism, the
Movement strives to nurture a healthy, pluralistic, spiritual and
ethical foundation for Israeli society.”
*From website masorti.org
As a Sisterhood, we make
an annual contribution to
Masorti, and specifically to our
“sister” kehilla. Every region in Women’s League is assigned
a kehilla to support. They are rotated every two to three years,
and women from the different kehillot frequently join us at
convention and share information about their area.
* “MERCAZ USA is the Zionist Organization of the
Conservative Movement, representing Conservative Judaism
within the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for
Israel, the American Zionist Movement and the Jewish National
Fund. Our mission is to support religious pluralism in Israel
and strengthen the connection between Israel and the Diaspora.
We are the advocates and the force that guarantees funding for
religious streams that is so crucial to our Movement’s growth
in Israel and around the world.”
*From website Mercaz.USA.com. Additional information is
available at the website.
Sisterhood will have an opening board meeting on Tuesday,
Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Our Opening General Meeting will be on
Thursday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Details will be out shortly about
the program and dinner. We hope to see many of you there.
We have an exciting and interesting year planned and
want every woman in the synagogue to be a part of it. you
do not need to be a member of the shul to be a member of our
Sisterhood, so your friends may come and join with you if they
are interested. Bills for dues will be in the mail soon (you may
have already received yours) and we look forward to greeting
everyone.
See you in shul,
We Want YOU!
By the time TBT members are reading this, the High
Holiday Subcommittee will have had at least two meetings
to begin planning for the services. We encourage you to
participate, by taking a role in our wonderful services.
Also, ushers are needed to monitor tickets and maintain
decorum.
If you are interested in serving as an usher, helping corral
youth in the hallways or having an ark opening or English
reading, please contact Judith Epstein at j2epstein@
Cantor Gala
On Saturday night, Nov. 17, 2012, Temple Beth Tzedek will be
honoring our beloved cantor, Mark Spindler.
This major Temple fundraiser will be celebrating his 25 years
of service to Temple Beth Tzedek and its predecessor shul, Temple
Shaarey Zedek. The Cantor is the first honoree of what we hope will
be an annual event.
The Cantor’s Gala Committee hopes that many of our congregants
will be there to help honor our Cantor and support Temple Beth
Tzedek. But if for some reason you can’t be there in person, you can
wish Cantor Spindler a yasher koach or a mazel tov by placing an ad
in our Tribute book.
The evening will include music, dinner, dancing and some surprises
that we can’t talk about yet!!
More information concerning the Tribute Book and the gala itself,
will be available very soon. Watch your mail, email and the Shofar
for more information or contact Lisa Davidson at 510-1990 or at
Lisaabbey57@gmail.com for further details.
Misheberach
The Temple Beth Tzedek community has enriched our
Shabbat morning services with the addition of singing
Debbie Friedman’s tune (z’l) for the Misheberach
prayer. As we continue to increase our congregational
family, we also have a long list of names on our
misheberach list. If you have added a name to the list in
the past, and are aware that the individual is no longer in
need of the special prayer for healing, please kindly call
the Temple office to have the person’s name removed
from our list. We wish everyone a speedy and complete
refua’h shelemah.
Project Beit Tefilah Update
This month, we are focusing on the recent activities of the Project Beit Tefilah Design Team. Other teams, as appropriate,
are also active and their activities may be featured in future months.
The Design Team includes Lynne Birnholz, Harold Gelfand, Janet Gunner, Rick Jacobson, Susan Katz, Jim Kramer, Leslie
Kramer, Harvey Lichtblau, Cathy Shuman Miller, Rabbi Netter, Harvey Podolsky, David Ribakove, Harvey Sanders, David
Schiller, Ed Steinfeld, Ellen Steinfeld and Rick Zakalik. The Design Team includes members with backgrounds in art and
architecture, experience with real estate, construction projects and construction materials, and knowledge of many of our
programs and activities for which space would be needed in any new building.
The Design Team has been very active recently. It met once in June and twice in early July to interview three architecture
firms – including two from out of town and one local firm. (The out-of-town firms came at their own expense. TBT did not pay
to bring anyone in.) The Design Team will soon be deciding whether or not to interview other local or out-of-town firms. (The
next meeting was scheduled too late in July to be included in this issue of the Shofar – stay tuned for next months’ update.)
Readers may wonder – why are we interviewing architects when we haven’t yet made a decision as to whether to even move
forward with a new building? Great question! In order to evaluate the two sites we are looking at most closely (as well as any
others), we need to have a good understanding as to the programmatic needs of the congregation – in order to determine how
large a building we would need and whether such a building could fit on that site. This requires the assistance of an architect.
Hence the need to interview architects now to help us evaluate our options. We also need to engage the services of engineers
to evaluate the sites as to the applicable setback and other site restrictions, as well as things like utilities and traffic flow, and
soil and other conditions that could impact the “buildability” of each site. Because architects and engineers work so closely
together, it makes sense to select an architect and engineer together. A cost consultant would then work with that information to
determine an appropriate budget to complete such a project. Remember – this site assessment will not require any expenditure
by the synagogue at this time, and will not cost us anything if the project does not move forward with a new building.
In order for the Congregation to decide whether to move forward with a new building, this is the kind of information we
need in order to make an informed decision. Accordingly, your Design Team is actively evaluating architects so that we can get
you this information. Later, if a decision is made to build a new building, the architect and the Design Team will be eager to get
input from the membership as a whole, as well as all committees, Sisterhood and Brotherhood, clergy and staff. Please hold
onto your design suggestions until and if we reach that point.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to Janet Gunner or Harvey Sanders.

Membership
The Membership Committee, while always reaching out to
welcome new members to the Beth Tzedek family, is planning a
Fun Day for our current members and for potential members on
Sunday, Sept. 2, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
It is a wonderful opportunity to relax in the Jerry Frank
Garden, talk with family and friends, and let the kids have a
relaxing afternoon, before the school year begins.
For the children, we will have a bounce house, a sidewalk
chalk picture contest, craft activities, bubbles, kite flying and
more. For the adults, we plan on having backgammon and chess
challenges, bridge, canasta and mahjongg games. Bring your
cards or tiles, and your friends. Maybe we’ll even have a piethrowing
contest. Nominate your favorite target!
We’ll have snacks and more, with hot dogs, hamburgers,
veggie-burgers (upon request), salad, chips, soft drinks, coffee,
tea (iced and hot) – all beginning at about 5:30 p.m.
Family pricing is $32 for a two-adult, two-child family
(children 16 years of age and under), plus $8 for each additional
child, with children under 3 free. Adults are $10 each.
Reservations are required for planning purposes. Please call
838-3232 to reserve your spot in the fun or email to rsvp@
btzbuffalo.org.
Do you know someone new to the area? Do you have a new
colleague or neighbor? Does you child have a new classmate?
We need your help, with every member of TBT acting as an
ambassador for our shul, to find new members. Please send
suggested names to Linda Boxer (390-6861 or boxerlinda@
yahoo.com).
HONORS PLATES – ALIYAH CARDS
SPONSORSHIPS ARE STILL
AVAILABLE
With the creation of Temple Beth Tzedek, our Ritual
Committee decided to produce new sets of Aliyah cards which we
plan on using on all Shabbatot and yom Tovim. We are seeking
sponsors for the individual plates, which can be dedicated as
honorials or memorials.
There are two sets of cards to be dedicated: one set is
anticipated for use for Shabbat, and the other set for all of the
yom Tovim. There are 15 individual cards in each set. As of this
writing, Set #1 for Shabbat has 12 of the 15 cards dedicated,
while Set #2 for yom Tov has four of the 15 cards committed.
This is a very beautiful and meaningful way in which to honor
or memorialize those close to you. The cost to dedicate a plate is
$108 (six times chai), which can be paid either by check to the
Temple or billed to your account.
If you would like to discuss this further, or if you wish to
dedicate one or more Aliyah cards, please contact Herb Scheer at
inaherb@aol.com or by phone at 716-631-5950.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Herb Scheer
Want to help your shul?
Here are some ways to raise
money for TBT while doing your
normal activities:
1. Shop at designated online vendors who will donate a percentage of
your purchase to Temple Beth Tzedek. TBT only receives this referral
fee if you connect to the vendor through our Web site by clicking
on a link from it. Once you do that, you do not need to do anything
further except shop. If you reach the vendor’s site in any other way,
TBT will not receive anything because the vendor can’t trace it back
to TBT. This is a great way to help TBT while you shop! Plus, you
save yourself the hassle of a drive to the mall! So, go to http://www.
btzbuffalo.org/funds/e-tail.htm, and start shopping!
*Amazon.com – Books, apparel & accessories, tapes & CDs,
DvD & video on demand, electronics & software, toys & games,
home improvement, auctions, jewelry, computer peripherals,
office supplies, etc.
*Artscroll – Specializing in Jewish content, particularly Torah
and Talmud: books, audio, software, Judaica.
*Jewish National Fund – Plant trees; support water projects;
honor your loved ones; satisfy the mitzvah of building up the
land of Israel. Twenty(20) percent of your donation comes
back to TBT, while 5 percent goes to united Synagogue for
Conservative Judaism.
*Kosher.com – Packaged kosher foods delivered to the address
you specify.
*Oy Toys – Toys, gifts, clothing, etc., with Jewish themes.
2. use the search engines at www.igive.com or www.goodsearch.com
after first designating Temple Beth Tzedek as your beneficiary. you
only need to make this designation once at each of these services.
After that, every Web search you do on these services yields a penny
for TBT. you do not need to connect to them from our Web site for
TBT to benefit. At www.igive.com, you must also become a member
(it’s free) and designate TBT as your cause, which will also yield a
separate payment to TBT. you may also use the cyber-malls of the
two Web sites without going through the Temple if you have already
designated TBT as your beneficiary.
3. Buy scrip cards for Tops Friendly Markets from the Temple office.
4. Buy Entertainment 2013 coupon books from the office, for $30
each. They make great gifts, or use them for yourself.
5. Support TBT recycling projects. Bring your discarded papers to the
recycling bin in the Temple parking lot. A list of acceptable papers is
available at www.btzbuffalo.org.
It all pays off. To date, TBT has already received $650.38 from
Amazon.com, $195.78 from Goodsearch.com, $201.52 from Igive.
com and $20 from JNF, for a total of $1,067.68. THAT’S MORE
THAN $1,000! And we’re STILL just getting started.
