Neil Broome Interview 49April 25, 2004like Andy Humm and people from Hetrick-Martin, etc. And, I wanted three questionspresented to people in a talking head format and then responded to, and that was – what’sbias-related violence? How is the gay and lesbian community affected? Why is that? What are some of the institutions that support violence against gays and lesbians insociety? Like social institutions and other institutions. And Gregg [Bordowitz] lent methe camera to make that.SS:I just have one last question, unless you think there’s something thatwe haven’t gotten into? Is there anything really pressing?NB:SS:No.Looking back – because you were in ACT-UP in the heyday – what doyou see as ACT-UP’s greatest achievement?NB:Well, there were a few things that occurred – increasing people’sawareness about HIV and how homophobia and who was affected affect social policy. Ithink people did – some people got that message, at large. And, that the gay communitycan – a community affected by HIV can respond and can make government responsive, and can make people accountable. That accountability can be compelled and people alsocan change the outcome of policy and legislation and drug trials and treatment and peopledon’t have to be helpless and people have the power. People have a lot of power – morethan they’d like to think. They just need to open their eyes and recognize that.SS:NB:Thank you, Neil.Thanks.[END OF INTERVIEW]
