Dear Friends & Supporters of Christian Living Communities,
happy birthday ClC! after reflecting on 40 years of service and commitment to enriching
the lives of seniors, we are struck by how our Christian foundation remains strong and
continues to provide direction for our future.
often when an anniversary comes around you find yourself digging through old photographs,
mementos and in our organization’s case, documents. one such document that we re-read
was a transcript that our original administrator, elmer houtsma, wrote in 1992 reflecting on
our founding. in the paper elmer outlined the vision for ClC, “...Christian living Campus
was never exclusively a service to the members of the community who founded it. it was
always intended to be, and always was, equally open to those from other traditions if they
were in need of the services provided.”
Christian living Communities continues to provide Christian love, respect and compassion
to all seniors regardless of their faith practice. We are very much rooted in the words of Jesus,
“as i have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34b). The commitment is the
same, it is how we carry out those words today that has changed.
instead of traditional hospital-like nursing care, today we provide top-notch skilled care in
thriving “resident neighborhoods.” The Masterpiece living and eden alternative
programs help us better empower seniors for active and meaningful aging.
We have solidified our commitment to memory services and are resolved to have at least 75
percent of our staff trained in the alzheimer’s association dementia certification program.
recently, difficult decisions were made to address federal funding cuts to Medicare and
economic challenges in the state. in 2010 and 2011, our team members did not receive wage
increases and found a way to reduce overtime and outside-agency use without impacting
quality of care; this resulted in our actual 2011 financial performance exceeding our budgeted
goals by $300,000 and allowed us to apply the funds to wage increases in 2012.
looking forward, we will focus on bringing services to seniors in their home, exploring
economical senior living options and integrating emerging technologies into the care we
provide. That care will be rooted in the same founding principles of loving others as god has
loved us.

Connecting the Dots
Moses speaks the words above to the people of god as they’re preparing
to move ahead after their 40-year journey. Part of their preparation is
to listen to the story of that journey. for the israelites, it’s an exercise in
“connecting the dots,” and the picture that emerges is of a faithful and
loving god.
The late Steve Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward;
you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that
the dots will somehow connect in your future.” it’s a fact that the future, no
matter how hard we think about it or how much we plan for it, is hazy and
uncertain at best. We can build hope and trust for an unknown future by
connecting the dots of our past, and seeing the picture that emerges.
our 40-year faith story at Christian living Communities is one of
prayerful beginnings and an unwavering commitment to care that is
both Christ-like and of the highest quality. it’s a story of devoted staff,
committed volunteers, and visionary leaders, each of whom have played
an important role in keeping Christian love, respect and compassion at the
center of daily life.
as we connect the dots, we end up with the same picture as Moses and the
people of god saw all those years ago: a picture of a faithful god who has
blessed us in all the work of our hands, who has watched over our journey,
and who for “these forty years” has been with us all the way. May it
continue to be so, by the grace of god.

The Beginnings
Foundation for the Future
“it wasn’t rosey at all. What can you do with $2000, even back then, 40
years ago, not much. So there was some struggling ...it was good that
bethesda came on board ...it all worked out well, never had doubts ...a
lot of prayer went into it. god led it all the way, without him it probably
wouldn’t be here today.” – Earl Lammers, the liaison between the Bethesda

“We would go and sweep the floors so it would be clean for the next day,
and when the windows got put in, we went and washed the windows and
when the furniture was brought over that had been stored in a barn, we
washed all the furniture down – so it was just exciting. We could see the
progress we were making. They were such good memories.” – Mary Ham

A window for each resident, side by side in the companion
rooms of 1972 and continues in the private suites of 2012
Decades of Impact
a window for every resident – sounds pretty common, but even today
some skilled nursing communities are built with companion suites that
have beds side by side, only one window for residents to share. in 1972,
with dignity and respect as the cornerstone, our founders ensured a
window for each person to enjoy fresh air and a beautiful view.
advocacy is also at the foundation of ClC. instead of “Mr. Smith goes to
Washington,” we had “elmer houtsma goes to Washington.” in the ‘70s
Congress passed legislation mandating each nursing home must have a
Medical director - little direction, no provisions for funding, legislation
without a nod towards implementation. Mr. houtsma, our first administrator,
was relentless in his advocacy for nursing home rights and influenced the
further clarification and financial support for the start of programs.
he also signed ClC on as an early member of a statewide senior care
advocacy group then called the Colorado association of homes for the
aging (Caha), now known as leading age Colorado. ClC’s faithful
support helped leading age grow from just a few care providers to the
200 strong members it is today.
ClC helped pioneer the assisted living option in the state of Colorado.
We were among the first to develop a care level offering help with dressing,
medications and meals to seniors who really didn’t fit skilled nursing
criteria but really weren’t safe at home. This new care level also brought the
advent of the 12-hour work shift and universal worker concept long before
it was commonplace in the senior care industry.
in the spirit of our founding, Christian living Communities continues to
look at dignity in the details. instead of windows, it is details like choice
dining and resident-directed services. ClC also continues its presence in
the national discussion with executive leadership serving on multiple
advocacy committees. as Mary reilly, a senior vice-president with the
national leading age organization stated, “You guys grow a lot of talent
there ...the leadership has really been noteworthy.”
as it was then, as it is now, and as it will be in the future – ClC is an
impactful organization.

Benefitting the Community At Large
Community Benefits
Christian living Communities mission of caring extends far beyond our
own doors. We play a vital role in the community by supporting other
organizations through our contributions of time, talent and treasure.
among our ongoing projects: blood drives, the intergenerational literacy
Partnership, support of Pinewood lodge, a low-income senior housing
community, toys for god’s Kids program and coupon clipping for military
families to highlight a few.
as a host of the 9health fair, the organization’s sixth year of participation,
staff and volunteers provided health screenings and counseling to more
than 800 people. additionally, in 2011 ClC raised and contributed:

our beloved volunteers, both community members and residents, donated
37,400 hours of service or the equivalent of nearly 19 full-time employees.
additionally, staff provided 1,046 hours of leadership to aging and health
services-related organizations.
altogether in 2011, ClC provided more than $2.7 million in recognized
benefit to the community as measured in estimated donations of time,
talent and dollars through programs, hosting meetings, monetary and
time contributions to other organizations as well as unreimbursed care and
service to Medicaid-eligible residents in our health care programs. This is a
$329,041 increase over 2010.
We are resolved to continue to build on the foundation laid long ago to
reach out to those who could benefit from our services and to be involved
in the community around us.

The beginning...
The story of Christian living Communities
begins in the late 1960s, when the board of
directors for bethesda hospital made the
difficult decision to close their Continuing Care
unit, which had been providing long-term care
for seniors. bethesda originally was a
tuberculosis hospital where many dutch
immigrants were treated.
March, 1968 | a steering committee made up of
representatives from denver-area reformed and
Christian reformed churches, along with members
of the bethesda hospital staff, meets to discuss the
possibility of building an independent nursing home
for the community.
December, 1968 | This steering committee meets
with another constituent committee, the Christian
home for the aged, and jointly they form the
university hills Christian nursing home association.
January 1969 | The first meeting of the board of
directors of the university hills Christian nursing
home association.
July 1971 | Construction of Phase 1, a 62-bed
nursing home begins, with don Jeltema as the
general Contractor.
1969, 1970, 1971 | Much prayer and effort are put
into the planning and financing of the nursing home
project. Many dedicated volunteers keep the vision
alive even in the rough times. elmer houtsma is
hired as the administrator for the new community.

May 1972 | a Service of dedication is held for the
university hills Christian nursing home.
March 1975 | a land purchase agreement is signed
with bethesda to buy 5-2/3 acres, including the land
across the street from the nursing home. a planning
committee of the board has already begun to make
plans for a retirement community (Phase 2).
March 1982 | Construction begins on the retirement
community, the Christian living Center.
June 15, 1983 | The living Center opens with great
success, and is completely filled by august 1st.
September 1984 | Construction begins on Phase 3 of
the university hills master plan, adding 32 nursing
home and 30 assisted living beds, building a new
dining room and office area, remodeling the kitchen,
turning the old dining room into a new activities
room, and putting in some beautiful landscaping.
1985 | The Christian living Campus foundation is
formed to help ensure the financial future of ClC.
1987, 1988, 1989 | The helen K. and arthur e.
Johnson foundation gives several grants to ClC for
the purchase of land on arapahoe road. Construction
begins on the Johnson Center, including assisted
living, nursing care, & a specialized alzheimer’s unit.

April 1990 | The Johnson Center begins admitting
residents. nursing home beds are full by november,
the Special Care alzheimer’s unit and assisted living
are full by September 1991.
1995 | Community outreach Program begins and
eventually evolves into our home Care Services.
1996 | Porter Care hospice opens on the Johnson
Center Campus. now known as Porter hospice.
September 1996 | The Village at The Johnson Center
opens, including retirement apartments and assisted
living units. it is fully occupied by the end of october.
September 2001 | ClC adds to the continuum of
care by assuming operation of adult day Services
from Calvary baptist Church.
January 2002 | groundbreaking ceremonies are held
at the new holly Creek campus, located near holly
and arapahoe road. Plans include independent
living cottages, retirement apartments and assisted
living apartments.
2004 | 51 cottages at holly Creek open, Phase i of
holly Creek retirement community construction
begins, and Christian living Campus becomes
Christian living Communities.
July 2005 | holly Creek Phase i opens, featuring a
portion of the town Center and 114 residential living
apartments. This marks ClC’s entry to the
Continuing Care retirement Community arena.
2008 | university hills & The living Center are
renamed Clermont Park retirement Community and
redevelopment begins, joining the two buildings into
one thriving retirement community.
January 2009 | holly Creek Phase ii opens,
completing the continuum of care. The new health
Suites offer 28 assisted living suites, 12 memory
support suites and 24 skilled nursing suites. an
additional 84 residential living apartment homes are
added to the campus.

February 2009 | new assisted living and memory

November 2010 | The health Suites and town
Center at Clermont Park is unveiled. The new suites
serve 63 skilled nursing residents/clients, and the
new town Center features a beautiful marketplace,
living room, game room and library.
Spring 2013 | 74 new residential apartment homes
will open at Clermont Park as well as the completion
of the town Center and the addition of a new adult
day Service at Clermont Park.

A Tradition of Giving
from the very beginning, Christian living Communities has been blessed
by generous supporters. When funds were initially lagging to build
university hills Christian nursing home, a plea for support went out in
early 1970 by way of advertisements in The banner and Church herald
(denominational magazines of the Christian reformed and reformed
Church of america, respectively). The ads offered non-secured debentures
or “promissory notes,” and constituents overwhelmingly responded by
purchasing notes totaling $627,000.
That same spirit of generosity exists today as you have continued to touch
and enrich the lives of numerous seniors.
in 2011, among other things, your generous support provided for:
4 Sustaining seniors in need of a little help with more than $18,000
in residents assistance by providing meals, medical equipment &
home care services
4The creation of a new adult day Services at Clermont Park set to
open in early 2013
4 The training of several dozen staff members in the eden alternative,
empowering us to transform our elder care settings into communities
where seniors flourish
4 Christmas gifts for employees recognizing their daily efforts to
provide quality services and care with dignity and respect
4 alzheimer’s association training for staff. as of the end of 2011, more
than 200 employees had taken at least one course, and nearly 50 had
been certified
