BOOK SALE
Earthquakes, tornados and floods – Northern Illinois had more than its share of extreme
occurrences this summer, The Mount Prospect Public Library didn’t escape unscathed. With
over 10 inches of rain in the early hours of July 23 rd , storm water washed over the bank on Route
83 and into the parking garage and eventually into the Library. The Friends room wound up with
3-4 inches of storm water on the floor. The Library was closed for two days while maintenance
staff pumped out the water and disposed of everything that got wet. Tom Garvin and his staff did
a super job of saving undamaged materials and cleaning everything. After ten days of fans and
dehumidifiers the Friends walked into a sparkling clean room and were back in business. The
publicity the Library received – we even made the Chicago TV news -- alerted the public to our
losses. With in a few weeks we received so many really nice donations that we were able to
replace what was lost and then some.

The July sale raised $10,044. Approximately two-thirds of those materials were sitting
on the floor in boxes the week before the flood. Luckily it did not rain a week earlier. Thanks to
everyone that put in many volunteer hours cashiering, sorting and schlepping boxes to bring it all
together.
EVENTS
The Friends were scheduled to have a table at the 12 th Annual Midsummer Downtown
Block Party on Saturday July 23 rd . Unfortunately, most of the materials we had earmarked for
this event were lost in the flood. With many of our volunteers dealing with their own flood
problems we decided to take a pass on the event. The Library still had a presence with several
staff members manning the Library’s table. Sorry if you missed us. We hope to participate again
next year.
EVENING BOOK DISCUSSION
The Friends Evening Book Discussion Group finished off the year with three terrific books.
In October they usually like to read a spooky story. This year it will be Audrey Niffenegger’s Her
Fearful Symmetry. In November, another Wisconsin book was chosen: A Reliable Wife by
Robert Goolrick. Then some comic relief with the heart warming story of Dewey the Small Town
Library Cat by Vickie Myron. The Friends Evening Book Discussion Group meets the third
Wednesday of every month at 7:30 pm in Meeting Room B. New friends are always welcome.
HELP WANTED
As always, we could use your help. We need volunteers to set up Thursday evening
before the sale and take down Sunday afternoon after the sale. Thursday and Sunday involve
moving boxes of books which seem to get a little heaver each year. If there are any younger
folks that need volunteer hours for school requirements we can offer a few hours on each day.
We could also use a few cashiers. So, if you have a few hours to spare and would like to help a
good cause, please give Peter Hicks a call at 847-439-7916 (PDJHicks@Yahoo.com)
We really appreciate all the help and time our dedicated volunteers contributed toward this
successful venture. So let’s have a great sale and make 2011 another great year.
