As the Center approaches its 10th anniversary celebration in Summer Internship American Grantscontent,<br />

In promoting teaching and research of the highest quality on Latin<br />

America at Harvard, the Center has identified support for faculty<br />

and student research, faculty-led field trips to Latin American<br />

research sites, and the introduction of courses with Latin American<br />

content as key priorities. The DRCLAS internship program, which<br />

matches student volunteers with non-governmental, cultural, public<br />

and private sector entities in Latin America, remains the largest<br />

program of its kind at the University.<br />

Harvard faculty received 12 conference grants, 9 research grants,<br />

two curriculum-development grants for new courses with Latin<br />

popular new inter-disciplinary course, Latin America and the Washington<br />

Consensus, with Harvard Law School Professor Roberto Mangabeira<br />

Unger. Simon Schwartzman, a leading Brazilian sociologist and<br />

President of the Institute for Studies on Labor and Society (IETS) in<br />

Rio de Janeiro, taught two courses on social issues in Brazil at the<br />

Harvard Sociology Department: Poverty, Exclusion and Modernization<br />

and Social Policies in Latin America: Issues, Stakeholders, Outcomes.<br />

Since 2002, the Regional Office in Santiago has organized several<br />

international conferences and public events in the region, hosting<br />

Harvard faculty members and staff working on existing projects or<br />

exploring new ones. More than 50 Harvard students participated in<br />

academic programs, internship or research opportunities organized<br />

Looking Ahead: The Next Ten Years<br />

In December 2004, the Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary.<br />

The 10th anniversary Steering Committee, chaired by Advisory<br />

Committee member Lorenzo Weisman, has contributed to the development<br />

of the Center’s strategic plan and is working to ensure an<br />

even brighter future through prudent financial planning and development<br />

efforts. The Center’s first decade was so full of good news that<br />

it may be hard to top, but the vastly interesting, contradictory,<br />

engaging and dynamic region we learn more about every day never<br />

ceases to inspire us.<br />
