It has been over fifty years since missionary
Bob Finley was expelled from China. When
that happened Finley predicted that the time
had come when missions would be carried
on by nationals, not foreigners. But when he
began to espouse that idea, there were not many
willing ears. He was scorned, castigated, and barred from speaking in
many places — but things have changed. Missions today are predicated
on Finley’s premise and nationals now carry on the dynamic expansion
of the Gospel throughout the world.
SLM has long recognized that principle and is supporting national
workers in 26 countries where they are producing results no foreigner
could ever hope to achieve. These national workers subsist on a fraction
of what is required to field a foreign missionary, so they need our
help.
Perhaps you have wished that you could reach India, or China, or
Africa or South America? Perhaps you wish you could go, or had gone?
It’s not too late!
Now you can make a personal difference without getting on a plane
or a boat. SLM is training national missionaries in all of the above
countries and some 80 others. Adopting one of those workers could put
your face in the missions picture. That worker could be your personal
representative to spread the Gospel in the country of your choice.
This issue of The Reaper is dedicated to introducing you to nationals
that are making a strategic difference, but who need your help (see pages
5-20). Won’t you consider contacting SLM today and letting us help you
fulfill your wish to make a major impact on a needy world? The greatest
and most effective impact you could ever have in missions today is by
supporting a national pastor or evangelist. Please consider helping SLM
meet their needs so they can reach the multitudes.
Many years ago, as the outreach of
Source of Light was growing, we were faced
with a decision about the best use of our
meager resources. We could retain all of our monthly finances
for home office and local needs, or invest some finances in field
needs by establishing Branches in other countries to distribute
our lessons and appropriately apply insight in counseling to
nationals. Not all American missionaries can fully comprehend
the issues of other cultures so that they can counsel students with
wisdom and understanding. Typically nationals are more effective
in ministering to nationals.
So, by faith, we began to prayerfully establish offices in other
countries. Some of our overseas Branches have been supervised by
gifted nationals and some by career American missionaries who
are called by God to a specific country.
During my tenure as General Director, it was my great privilege
to visit many of our fields for extended periods of time to sense
what God was doing. My impression is that God has signally
blessed the decision to support the fields by wonderfully touching
our donors’ hearts to meet the needs, and by very encouraging
reports of souls saved, fine people discipled, and many good
churches established.
In the natural life, I enjoy planting things and seeing them
grow to produce fruit or display beauty. I feel that God has allowed
Source of Light to plant offices in many fields and God has blessed
us with much fruit and spiritual beauty. Our primary seed is the
Word of God. Jesus said, The seed is the word of God. Except a corn
of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone. but if it die, it
bringeth forth much fruit. Praise God, our fields report many tens
of thousands of “seeds” that have been sown. God’s immutable
promise is that His Word (the seed) will not return void (Isaiah
55:11). Praise God with us for all that He has done, and help us by
prayer as you learn of specific needs of our fields.
5
In Galatians 4 we read that Jesus was born of a woman to redeem
His People that they might receive the “adoption of sons.”
Adoption changes everything for the son of God. The past is
forgotten and it is as if the son was born into the family. Adoption
means that the Heavenly Father loves the adopted son as His own.
Adoption means the son has a permanent relationship with the
Heavenly Father. Once adopted, that position is irrevocable.
The most unique thing about this adoption into God’s family
is that our Heavenly Father made the choice to adopt us. We have
no choice as to who our earthly father is, but our Heavenly Father
chose us and adopted us! He has also made us heirs and joint heirs
with Christ, His Son.
In this issue of The Reaper, we are introducing some of our
national workers. We are suggesting that you or your church
consider adopting one or more of these national missionaries!
Make them a part of your family or your church family. Remember
their specific needs and faithfully bring these needs to God in
prayer. If you are able, support them financially. If you cannot help
with their financial needs, you can pray that the Lord will lay them
on the heart of someone else who can support them. Many of these
nationals have very little financial backing. Your adopting them
could be the catalyst that makes their ministry expand and grow
— bringing forth MUCH fruit to the glory of God. There are eleven
national missionaries mentioned in this issue of The Reaper. Ask
God if He would have you adopt one of these nationals! SLM has
many other national workers that need your prayer and financial
support. Write to the SLM Field Department if you would like to
adopt a national from a different country. We will be happy to send
information about others to adopt.
Thank you for praying about adoption, and participating
in this aspect of Source of Light Ministries. What a wonderful
opportunity for you, your Sunday school, or your church to adopt a
family or ministry, following them as they serve Christ in a country
or culture that you may never see or visit. You CAN serve the Lord
in a country thousands of miles away! Details about finalizing an
adoption are on Page 20.
Thousands of souls went into
many more were left homeless by the
Guyana Branch Director, Winston
Abel, writes: “Guyana is one of the
least densely populated countries in
the world and the only one in South
America that is English-speaking. The
population of Guyana is spread thinly
over large areas. Many, especially the
original nationals, live in isolated
villages far into the interior of the
country. This makes it difficult to
personally reach large sections of
the people on a one-on-one basis,
to communicate the truth of the
Gospel. Because of the geography,
demographics, and religious diversity
of Guyana, and because there is
postal service to most of the country,
SLM Bible lessons are ideally suited
to bridge this communication gap.
“About one-third of the population
of Guyana is Hindu and ten percent
are Muslim. There are very few
evangelical Christians in the rest of
Mailing Bible lessons to students
the population. SLM literature is the
only exposure many of these adults
and children have to the Gospel. One
of the most important roles played
by SLM in Guyana is the teaching of
God’s Word to believers and those
attending church. There is very little
fundamental Bible teaching here, and
many of the churches are charismatic
Mailing Bible lessons to students
seeking spiritual gifts and prosperity,
negating sound fundamental Bible
teaching. The majority of our students
have attended church most of their
lives, but never understanding the
plan of salvation and what it means
“When I, Johnson
Bello, was 15 years
old, I discovered my
love for God’s Word
while studying at
a Bible Institute.
Teaching the Word
of God appeared to be my spiritual
gift. First, I served as Dean of
a Correspondence Bible Study
school for eight years. Then I met
Dr. Glenn Dix of Source of Light
International, and I joined SLM in
2000.
“The SLM Bible lessons are
much appreciated here in Ivory
Coast because the writing is simple
and clear. Many children, young
people, and adults have received
Jesus Christ as their personal
Savior through the Bible lessons,
and continue to do so.
“One of my greatest sorrows
and burdens has become one of my
The Challenge:
9
greatest joys. Since the war, 99%
of the churches have modified the
clear teachings of God’s Word. They
preach only about how to obtain
material blessings and health, and
about demonology. The salvation
of souls is no longer a priority.
To fight this theological plague,
God convinced me to set up a free
Distance Bible Institute. Pastors in
ministry do not need to leave their
churches, but can study online at
our Web site: http://ibed-inter.org.
“At first, I worried if the Pastors
would accept the truth. But God told
me: ‘Bello, just give them the lessons.
I will do the rest.’ To this day, I have
not received any complaint. In fact,
many students now have courage to
teach the new things they learned:
eternal security, proofs of Christ’s
Deity, and spiritual gifts. God has
also allowed me to teach doctrine in
a charismatic Bible Institute.
“The next plague I want to fight
is the flood of immorality and
iniquity that comes to our people
through radio and television. Socalled
Christian radio stations,
because of money, broadcast many
false teachings. My future goal is to
operate Biblically sound Christian
radio and television stations.”
“Soon after
my conversion
in 1975 [writes
Philip Thang], I
offered my life to
serve the Lord.
When I finished
my study, I
went for a year to an unreached area
of Myanmar [formerly Burma] as a
missionary. Thank God, 349 people
accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as
their personal Lord and Savior. They
converted from animism and became
new believers in Christ. By 1985,
seven churches were established in
several places. Now these churches
are self-supporting.
“After attending Berean Baptist
Bible College in India, I finished
my masters’ and doctor’s degrees by
correspondence from institutions in
the USA. God led me to start “Win
Myanmar Mission” in 2003, which
includes Word Bible Seminary, an
orphanage, and church planting. We
thank the Lord for working together
with SLM International to establish
SLM Myanmar in January 2009.
Through SLM, we have begun a
discipleship school, a prison ministry,
and started translation work. We are
also using the courses of the World
Wide Bible Institute in our seminary.
“One day I went to Kanpalet to
The Challenge:
10
preach the Gospel. I found four girls of
one family there. I heard the story that,
when the family went out to the field,
the father was possessed by an evil
spirit. When they returned home, the
father killed the mother with a knife.
The children became totally helpless.
They did not have enough food to eat,
or enough money to attend school. I
felt terrible for them when I saw them
with my own eyes. I put myself in their
place, and my heart was moved with
compassion. I took them back to my
home. All four girls have accepted Jesus
as their personal Lord and Saviour and
attend the government school. God
has now led me to support 15 orphans
in our orphanage.
“We are doing our best to win all
of Myanmar to Jesus Christ, and to
ground them in sound doctrine with
the SLM materials. There is no greater
joy than sharing the good news and
winning lost souls. Please pray for us.”
Romania is the land of Transylvania
and Gypsies. Just over twenty years
ago this country was freed from the
Pavel Greucean
power of the Soviet Union. At that
time religious freedom was severely
restricted. The religious environment
is dominated by the Romanian
Orthodox Church which claims over
87% of the population. Since 1990,
Source of Light missionaries Pavel and
Cipriana Greucean have conducted an
SLM DTB in Otelu Rosu, a small town
in eastern Romania. Pavel conducts
Bible correspondence courses, prison
ministries and leadership training
seminars, and does follow-up on
evangelistic ministries.
The downturn in missions giving
due to the worldwide economic
situation has challenged many of
feel this economic pinch more severely
than we here in the U.S. Instead of
The Challenge:
and was given a degree in apiculture
by the government of Romania.
Pavel now has 100 bee hives that
produce honey and are rented to
farmers in the area to polinate crops.
His initiative and entrepreneurship
has helped the SLM ministry in
children are Priscilla (4) and Aquilla (2).
My parents and I are Christian converts
from Islam. In 1985, when our family
started a church
in my mother’s
village on Java,
there were no
Christians in
the village.
Now, there is a
Gospel church
and a house
for a monthly all-night prayer
meeting for local pastors.
“I worked for more than
10 years at a fertilizer
trading company. In October 2006,
God showed me His plan for me to
become a full-time servant of God, so I
resigned my job. At first, it was difficult
because we always got a salary every
month; now, we had to live by faith and
depend on God. My vision and burden
was not to become a pastor, but to help
other pastors and Christian people in
Indonesia to have a basic knowledge
of Christian theology and to learn how
to live the Christian life. In February
2008, I shared my vision with a pastor
friend of mine and he placed me in
contact with SLM International.
“When I viewed the SLM materials,
God burdened me to start SLM in
Indonesia. A SLM representative
came to Jakarta in 2008 and
The Challenge:
• Purwoko needs an additional $300 per month support to operate
this new Discipleship Training Branch.
• Adopt Purwoko and the new Branch office in Indonesia.
15
encouraged me to promote the SLM
courses throughout the country. By
the middle of 2009 it was clear God
had brought us into partnership, and
we made plans to open a new SLM
Branch. A few hours before the
SLM representative came to
Indonesia, God called my father
home to Heaven. Personally, I
was very sad because
my father was my
hero, and I always
shared my problems
with him and counted
on his advice.
“Although I was in
deep sorrow, I decided
that we should still
open the new Branch in Indonesia.
Praise the Lord that on October 20,
2010, SOLMINDO (SLM-Indonesia)
was born. We began to print the SLM
Bible courses locally here in Central
Java. God has now enabled us to
expand the SLM ministry to four other
areas: Jakarta, West Kalimantan,
North Sulawesi, and North Moluccas.
“Christian churches in Indonesia do
not have good discipleship programs.
Converts from a Muslim background
also face persecution and the need
to change their whole mindset. That
is why SLM in Indonesia exists: to
develop the quality of faith of Christian
people so that they can be strong
in the face of trials, troubles, and
suffering.”
Guillermo and Vicky
Salazar minister in the
town of Temuco, close
to the southern tip of
Chile, nearly at “the end
of the earth.” They began
to work with Source of
Light in 1979. Guillermo
is a seminary graduate and has studied at
the Technical University of Chile. He has
been a Baptist pastor and has experience
serving in several churches and in camp
ministries. He worked as a government
administrator before joining SLM.
Vicky is very talented and as a young
person, much of her time was devoted to
working with children. She is a graduate
of the Child Evangelism Fellowship
teacher’s training course. Vicky studied
piano, voice, and nursing in a university;
she also took seminary courses. Vicky and
Guillermo have one daughter, Marcela.
Guillermo is the director for the Chile
Discripleship Training Branch. From the
Branch office, they send out lessons to
the 78 Associate Discipleship Schools in
that country.
Guillermo has the oversight of two
churches — the city church in Temuco
and one in the rural countryside. It is difficult
to get to this church because of very
The Challenge:
• The SLM Chile office/storage area was severely damaged during
the February earthquake. They still need $980 to repair the
damage, as well as for the supplies given out in relief work.
• The Salazar’s need $800 in monthly support.
bad roads, but these uneducated people
love the Lord and studying the SLM Bible
courses. Guillermo and Vicky developed
materials for a Marriage Enrichment Retreat
program as they were concerned for
many Chilean couples (even Christian
couples) divorcing. Vicky has also written
materials to help women experiencing
domestic violence.
Guillermo has served as a prison chaplain
for many years. The Lord has blessed
him with an exciting ministry working
with inmates. As they study the Bible lessons
and hear God’s Word taught, many
have come to Christ and been baptized.
In the southern tip of Chile there are
many natural disasters — severe winds
that bring havoc; tsunamis that bring
flooding; and most recently, a series of
earthquakes. The Salazar’s try to minister
to their countrymen with aid, food, and
supplies, in hopes that some will come to
know the Savior.
Leadership of the Source of Light
Branch in Brazil has undergone
change in the past few years. Jim and
Julie Leonard have worked diligently
in training a national worker,
Antonio Bibiano, to take over the
responsibility and leadership of the
SLM Brazil Branch. With passing
on the torch to Reverend Bibiano
as the director of the Discipleship
Training Branch, comes many
responsibilities. We trust that God
will lead Antonio to continue to train
new leaders to reach out to the 187
million Brazilians, just as he was
prepared for ministry.
Antonio considers the Source of
Light Bible courses as an efficient
tool to further missions. He writes:
“In Acts 1:8, we see that to do
missions we receive the necessary
power to do so. But ye shall receive
The Challenge:
• Pray for Antonio Bibiano as he directs the DTB in Brazil.
• The Bibiano’s need $500 in monthly support.
• Adopt Antonio Bibiano and his wife and the Branch ministry
power, after that the Holy Ghost is
come upon you. To accomplish this
command ye shall be witnesses unto
me; for a simultaneous global and
local outreach both in Jerusalem, and
in Judea, and in Samaria, and unto
the uttermost part of the earth.”
SLM Brazil uses the Bible courses
with great results, for evangelism
in the public schools, in prisons,
and in churches. Antonio says “the
biggest blessing of the Bible courses
is planting churches.” He has found
this true in the Source of Light
Baptist Church which was planted
six years ago.
Pray for Antonio and his wife as
they place the tools of ministry into
the hands of faithful leaders, called
of God, to bring Brazilians to Christ
and to help them grow in Him.
In 1971, at
age 19, the Lord
called me [Samar
Pradhan] for fulltime
service. After
receiving training
at Calcutta Bible
College, the
Lord gave me
opportunity to work with a churchplanting
organization. I was excited
to see how the non-Christians
were coming to know the Lord.
The basic thing which I learned at
this time was the life of faith.
One day, before a Seekers’
Conference, when I asked for
money from the National Director,
he told me, “We have no money,
but you pray for this need and
God will surely provide.” That
day we got a surprise gift for the
conference.
Another time we needed to pay
money to purchase a building, but
we had no money in our bank. If
we did not pay in time, the advance
money would be lost. However,
through prayer, the Lord provided
miraculously. Faith always brings
victory in our lives.
The Challenge:
• Samar and Smruti Pradhan need $300 a month support.
• Pray that a church will be planted among the Muslim people in
Samar’s area. Pray that the Lord will bring a revival in Orissa.
• Adopt Samar and Smruti Pradhan and the ministry in Orissa,
India.
18
I got married
in 1982 and I am
so thankful to
God that He gave
me the right life
partner. My wife,
Smruti, works as
Headmistress of a
Christian School in
our city. We have two daughters.
We praise God that three
Muslim people recently accepted
Jesus as Savior through our
Bible lessons. We are meeting
with them personally and sharing
about the work of salvation in
detail. I would like to start a
church among the Muslim people
in my area.
A SLM International representative
came in 2010 and trained our
new Board of Directors. Together,
it is our earnest prayer and desire
to reach all the districts of Orissa
State with the Bible lessons and
to make them true disciples of
Jesus. We know many people
are sincerely praying for Orissa.
I believe God will surely bring a
revival in our land. Thank you for
praying for us.
“In 1993, I [Fanie Buys] felt a
renewed call of God on my life
to work for Him. For two years
I searched for clarity on what He
wanted me to do. After a prayer
journey to Turkey in 1995, I was
sure that God wanted me to work
for Him full-time. At that time it
was for children’s ministry.
“It was during our stay in
Switzerland in 1996 that we first
saw The Mailbox Club Bible lessons.
We were very impressed with
them, and that there were courses
for children through adults. Love,
Dating, and Marriage, especially
attracted us. We knew the Biblical
principles taught in these lessons
had great potential, through the
working of God’s Spirit, to change
lives.
Sanna, our
faithful helper
“In 1998, we
placed an ad in
the newspaper
advertising this
course. Two days
later I dreamed
that I opened
my postal box
and letters poured
out. That
Saturday morning when I opened
the box the dream became reality.
My postal box was full of letters —
The Challenge:
19
letters asking for correspondence
courses.
“That was just the beginning. In
1999, we placed ads in newspapers
in Namibia, Zambia, and Swaziland.
The reaction was, and still remains
overwhelming. From South Africa
there is a great variety of students.
The largest percentage is from the
overfilled prisons all over South
Africa. As we were using more and
more lessons, it was evident that
this had become our main ministry.
We did not have time to continue
with the children’s ministry at that
time.
“Earlier this year, we again
felt the need to advertise in the
newspapers and this was met with
good results. We also have started
a Good News Club for children
again. Praise the Lord! With Him all
things are possible!”
Children’s ministry (Fanie Buys is second
from the left in the second row.)
The stories and needs of SLM National Missionaries around the
world are hard for us to grasp. They tug at our hearts and we wish we
could suddenly have the answer to all their situations. Our Lord wants
our hearts to be bound together with those who serve on the “front line.”
May we see with their eyes the desperate needs of each ministry and
outreach. Pray that God will give you a heavy heart, burdened to the
point that you are compelled to pray earnestly that the needs of these
workers will be met for His Glory.
Ninety percent of SLM’s overseas missionaries are people who are
native to the country in which they serve. Most of them have no means
of obtaining support, unless we help them. Please read through the pages
of this Reaper again, asking God to touch your heart about the needs in
these countries. You may want to consider adopting a national worker.
Our Adopt-a-National Worker program allows you or your church to
bring one of these workers into your family. You can exchange pictures,
E-mails, letters, and perhaps visits! When you adopt a national worker
you will receive an official Certificate of Adoption.
How to Finalize your Adoption
1. Notify Source of Light that you want to Adopt-a-National
Worker.
• You can notify the Field Office by E-mail at:
fieldoffice@sourcelight.org
• You can call the Field Office at 706 342-0397
• You can write Source of Light Field Office at 1011 Mission
Road, Madison, Georgia 30650
2. Give the name and country of the national worker you wish to
adopt.
3. Send us your name and address.
The Field Office will send you more information about the national
worker and the country you have chosen to adopt. Just imagine what
your prayer support and financial interest will mean to the person you
are adopting.
For the past two years, the Prepress Department
has been updating many of the SLM courses as
they are prepared for the Computer-to-Plate (CTP)
readable text, standardizing test placement
to a center pull-out, fewer pages, and adding
color to the courses. Most recently, the emphasis has
been on updating foreign-language materials that were originally
