Welcome to CONvergence 2012! Welcome to four days of the nerdiest fun. Ever.
Whether you’re a Joss Whedon aficionado, hardcore Starcraft gamer, aspiring science
fiction writer, or just want to know how to explain fantasy to your boss who’s started watching Game
of Thrones, CONvergence has you covered. With panels running all day (and late into the night!), you’ll never be without
entertaining conversations about your favorite genre topic.
This year’s theme, Wonder Women, celebrates the women in science fiction and fantasy who may not always be the star
but always kick butt. It also celebrates the women who create said butt-kicking heroes. Guests of Honor Lyda Morehouse
(author), Sharyn November (editor), and Tamora Pierce (author) have created some of our favorite
novels featuring female heroes, while Bonnie Burton (author), Sophie
Aldred (actor), Ruth Thompson (artist), and Judith Walcutt (writer/
director) have been the driving forces behind your favorite games,
programs, and geek culture commentary. You’ll have the chance to learn
more about your favorite characters straight from them and what it takes
to succeed in their professions – and maybe get an autograph or two.
But CONvergence is more than just panels. Visit Harmonic CONvergence
to listen to live bands, or take a break to watch insanely
awesome anime in Theater Nippon. Get your hands dirty with art and
science projects in Connie’s Quantum Sandbox. But please avoid creating
grey nanobot goo in a fit of brilliance… that’s so hard to get out of
the carpet.
And don’t forget to stay for CONvergence’s nightlife. As the sun sets,
out come amazing costumes and the outrageous personalities to
match. Watch your fellow costumed con-goers perform in the Masquerade,
or interact with them as they roam the hotel. One of the best con
moments is coming across your favorite character in the flesh (so to
speak) and getting photographic proof. Or finding the perfect Hulk to
round out your Avengers cosplay group, because not everyone has
the guts to run around in public, shirtless and painted green.
Of course, there are also the room parties ringing the pool area.
Two levels of formerly mundane hotel rooms transform for the
night into themed retreats with food, drink, music, and activities.
Who can resist 1-up cupcakes or test tubes filled with
delicious “science”? And don’t forget about CONsuite, serving
munchies and conversation in equal portions late into the
night.
So come join us in the celebration of inspiring women that
is CONvergence 2012! Gentlemen, take a seat this year and
see how ladies make science fiction and fantasy even better.
