Did you know Isleham has a village pond? Tony Westonis the ponds guru for Friends of Isleham NatureReserves and, with Avi Stacey and the help of grantsfrom The Wildlife Trusts ofBedfordshire, Cambridgeshireand Northamptonshire, hasbeen renovating the pondbeside East Fen Road. It isdeveloping well. Below Tonyreflects on his experienceswith his own ponds this year:“June and July seem to be thetime that nature renews itself. As always it has elements oftooth and claw. This year wasno exception in my ponds.“The 2011 battle was fought in the pond water betweenabout 20 Dytiscus (Great Diving) beetles that had flown in andthe tadpoles before I could affect a rescue… This was no contest;all 30 lots of frogspawn came to nothing as the tadpoles gotdevoured. The next year saw an invasion of dragonfly larva inmy newt pond. I did a little rebalancing of the odds and endedup with a good hatch of efts (baby newts).“This year has been no less a problem. My deep fishpond hada clean out and a haircut to get it ready for hot summer days. Inthe bottom, the liner had been breached by willow root frommy corkscrew willow, fortunately the mud in the bottom sealedthe holes. The willow is no more, it has been weed killed. Next,a grass snake was hunting fish in the pond. Sorry fish, but thistime the snake gets precedence.”As a result of his spring-clean and May’s Shubunkin goldfishspawning, Tony has several hundred fry. If anyone wants to trytank-rearing fry some give Tony a call on 01638 780692. Healso has available a few types of pond plant and some large lilies.Among other wildlife news from the Friends of IslehamNature Reserves, we should mention the avocets that have beenon Isleham Wash since early spring and the common terns thatare now feeding their chicks on the artificial island Avi and Tonybuilt and then fixed in the Wash over the winter. As we approachautumn, waders will be using the Wash as a place to feed up ontheir southward migration – green sandpipers are regular, butit’s worthwhile looking out for a range of other species. We held a successful open dayon 22nd June for other “Friends”groups (all volunteers responsible formanaging other Local Nature Reservesin Cambridgeshire) –as always we arevery grateful to St Andrews Church forthe use of the social centre for suchevents. We had a useful exchange ofideas with the other groups about ourmanagement of the railway reserve, and were able to show them some ofthe wildlife we are seeking to protect, such as the odd, pale yellow broomrapeplants, which parasitise the knapweedplants growing on the reserve.Other events to look out for areChildren’s Fun Day on 27th July at theRailway Reserve (from 12.00–3.00pm)in association with Soham Children’sCentre. All welcome – bring a picniclunch and we will provide butterflynets, collecting equipment and we willhelp children identify what they catch;there will be arts and crafts as well.www.ljbroofingservices.co.uk7OvenPadCleaning ServicesI will professionally and efficiently clean ovens, ranges,Agas, ceramic hobs, extractors, microwaves and BBQs.It’s a dirty job:why not give me a call? Please contact Paddy Kelly onTel: 01638 742703Mobile: 0775 263 1343Email: info@ovenpad.comwww.ovenpad.comLater in summer we will hold a bat evening – date and venueto be determined – again all welcome. If you’d like to know more about the Friends of IslehamNature Reserves, please contact Alastair Burn (01638 780553),or Andrew Garbutt (07903 092899).You can also find us on Facebook. A Big Thank YouFrom the Gala Association CommitteeThe sun shone and the crowds came out and everyone had alovely time.A lot of very hard work for several months ahead goes intoorganising the day and although a lot of people are involved, the biggest THANK YOU must surely go to the volunteers whoPhotos by Vernon Place:Above: The WI’s Suffragette Parade; Left: Mildenhall Cycle Club organised cycleraces; Opposite page, clockwise: Pre-School Egg & Spoon Race; Gala Queen andPrince, Megan and Connor Forder ; “Miss & Mr Isleham”: Noreen Brighty withBecky & Victoria Rattle with Hector.just turn up on the morning around 8am to get the field set up.This involves getting equipment from store; driving in supportstakes; erecting stripy stalls and marquees; setting out No Parkingcones; putting black rubbish bags onto stakes; etc., etc., etc. By11am the field is transformed, but long before this, the peoplehiring stalls and pitches have started to arrive, all wanting toknow where they will be.Another big THANK YOU goes to the organisations that jointhe Parade with floats, both large and small – some creatingWalking Floats. The Glen Moriston Pipe Band, of course, and theMajorettes and indeed everyone else who plays an importantpart: marshals at the head and rear of the Parade and aroundthe route, to make sure that everything ‘stays together’ and thatall participants are safe. There has been disappointment andcriticism expressed in recent years at the lack ofparticipants in the Parade and this is an opportunityto explain that one of the reasons is the lack oftractors and trailers (or other suitable vehicles)available on loan; another is the lack of volunteersto help plan and execute ideas. Perhaps now isthe time when local Organisations – and there aremany – to think about getting together to enterjoint floats. The Competition Marquees were once againbursting with entries and on arrival the Judges (whoall live away from the Village) stood and expressedtheir amazement at the array of exhibits. The CraftMarquee had fewer entries this year but all were ofa very high quality. Crafters please take note. There are so many individuals and companies tothank that to try to mention them all here wouldbe to risk omission but they will receive personal10

Itis not necessary to join the Committee (althoughyou would be welcome) but ideas and commentsare always welcome. It is also possible that youcould be involved in planning and organizing the daywithout the need to attend Committee Meetings. Ifmeetings are not your thing, just get in touch withany Committee Member who will be pleased tokeep you in touch with how you can help. Settingup on the mornings of Gala has been mentioned butsometimes it is forgotten that what goes up mustcome down and the end of the day is hard when iseveryone is tired – particularly if they have beenworking stalls or pitches, etc., throughout the dayas well. YOUR HELP would be most welcome then– it only takes a couple hours – or perhaps just oneif there are enough helpers! We look forward to seeing you all next year.Margaret DavisGala Competition ResultsThe Gala Committee apologise for any omissions or misspellings inthe following, which are due to circumstances beyond our control.Isleham Gala Grand Draw1st Dave Sennett 2nd Lynette Gray 3rd Linda ???RacesPre-schoolRunning 1st Jack Scrivener2nd Damol Colin 3rd Chloe BarnesEgg & Spoon 1st Grace Neal2nd Ashley MurfittBean bag race 1st Ashley Murfitt2nd Colin Myson 3rd Jack ScrivenerUnder 10Running Boys 1st Ben Brooks2nd Max Timms 3rd Ben WilsonGirls 1st Mya Davies2nd Tia Baxter 3rd Rhianna Higson12

Isleham Community CentreNow looking forwardSummer has finally arrived and with it,we have seen two major steps in thebuild. During May, the old playgroundwas removed and over about 10 days wewitnessed the end of an era, as the old VillageHall was demolished. Whilst tinged withsadness at seeing the demolition of a buildingthat has served the village well, it was goodto see another step in the build completedand it now gives a better feel of the overallsite. I’m sure many people have happy memories of events heldin the old hall and, with that in mind, if anyone has pictures ofpast events, in the old hall or on the recreation ground pleaseforward them so that they can be scanned for inclusion on ourFacebook page, the village website and with a bit of work thecreation of an album to be held in the new centre.Once again apologies to all the parents and children whowould have used the old equipment but, as you may haveseen, removal at this stage was essential. A supplier has beendecided upon for the new playground and provisional designplans were displayed on our Gala Day stall. These plans willbe followed up with the supplier doing a consultation with theprimary school children, where the children will have a say onthe equipment to be installed, this should have either takenplace before or if not directly after the summer holidays. Thenew design will incorporate a few refurbished newer piecesfrom the old playground. Work on installation will commencein the new year as we have to demolish the old pavilion andwait until the builders have cleared the site, we will be givingfurther updates as the project progresses. With the weather being good during June and July, work hasmoved on at a good rate. At our monthly site meeting held inJune progress was reported at being at 41% completion. Thiswas only slightly behind the planned point, and with the speedydemolition and internal block-work going at a good pace I cansee most of the delay being recovered. Could Isleham have its ownTimebank?Timebanking is a great way for communities tocome together and help each other by exchangingknowledge, help and skills. The idea is that within a community people help eachother. By helping someone else, you can then save yourtime in the Timebank as a ‘time credit’. One hour equalsone hour. So for every hour you help someone in yourcommunity you can receive one hour of help in return. The possibilities are endless; you could give or receivehelp with writing a CV, picking up a prescription or learna new sport. There are now five Timebanks in Cambridgeshire. Each Timebank has their own coordinator who promotesthe idea, arranges time exchanges and makes sure thateverything is done safely, for example, where individualsupport is being provided for a vulnerable person theTimebank member will have appropriate police checks. Most Timebanks have a paid coordinator; however, thereare good examples, such as Eynesbury and St Neots wherethe Timebank is run on a voluntary basis. The Parish Council would like to know whether thisis something that would be welcome and supported inIsleham, if so please telephone the Parish Clerk.Mrs Diane Bayliss on 01638 781687Bowls ReportWe have now passed the mid-point of the season, the evenings are starting to draw in and theautumn leaf fall looms ahead. The teams have performed well in their respectivedivisions. In the Ely and District leagues, the men aresituated half way in the table but the ladies are in secondplace and can still push for the title. In the Cambridge andDistrict league we have climbed up to Division 3 and areholding are own in mid table, safe from relegation. Wenow need to build on this success and push for promotionin 2014.We have had good success in the national competitionswith Michael Bartlett, Barry Clarke and Barry Grimwoodwinning 3 matches before losing out in the Cambridgeshirecounty semi final by 2 shots (sadly to a Fordham team)therefore just missing out reaching the national finals atWorthing. But in the fours championship, a team comprising ofShane Dunbavin, John Foreman, Darren Dunbavin andBarry Grimwood went one step further and beat a teamfrom Christchurch on an extra end tie break to qualify fora date at Worthing in August. This is a major achievementfor the club as we will represent Cambridgeshire in theEnglish National Championship and will be playing aWiltshire team in the first round. However, before that isthe chance to become county champions when we play ateam from Sawston in the county final at St Neots. The club has also hosted a top ladies county matchbetween Norfolk & Leicestershire; both counties praisedthe facilities we have and the welcome they received whilstin Isleham. The Fair used to rest there, before moving on.They stayed a week, thenthey were gone.Pancake Day Race wasalways good fun,Then into the hall for tea anda bun. Some classes were allowedfrom school for the race. They enjoyed watching, itwas quite a slow pace. But that’s not allowed now,for safety you see,So the race got finished, andso did the tea.1952—2013Now we say farewell to the old Village Hall;Good times were had there, we can all recall.Dances, Meetings and Jumble Sales,Parties, Receptions and Pantomime tales.Cricket Dinners were held there every year. Our team got to Lords, we gave them a cheer. We had concerts and ballet to name a few,Country and Western were popular too.On Gala days we hope forsunshine. We’re lucky if the weatherstays fine. The band and the races all get a cheer,And hope for the same again next year.So for sixty-one years the hall has been used.Let’s hope that the next sixty will keep us amused. With lots of things happening for us to enjoy; To make special memories for each girl and boy.Joyce Drayton24
