2006 – 2009 AUSTRALIANRESEARCH COUNCIL GRANTProfessor James Ogloff is a memberof the research consortia.Juries and interactive visualevidence: Impacts on deliberationprocesses and outcomeVisual technologies are transforming thecourt environment. This project measuresthe impact of interactive displays on thetrial process; specifically how computersimulations and crime scenereconstructions may better inform juries,but potentially increase prejudice againstdefendants. The project brings in the keyplayers as industry partners - police,prosecutors and judges - workingalongside academic experts in law,architecture, media studies, psychologyand criminology. Blending observationand experimental approaches, the studytracks how jurors in simulated courtsettings use visual evidence in makingdecisions, and identifies ways of usinginteractive technologies most effectively,while minimizing negative impacts.Australia confronts new types of securitythreat in the form of terrorist networks,sophisticated money-laundering andpeople-smuggling operations. TheAustralian Federal Police and prosecutorsare developing new display technologiesto explain complex information to jurors,which in the process, simplify courtprocesses and shorten trials. At thecutting edge of this development areinteractive displays, including computersimulations and crime scenereconstructions. Judges will use empiricalinformation about how juries use suchinformation in order to developappropriate guidelines for admittinginteractive visual evidence, while courtplanners and architects will use theproject data to identify implicationsfor court procedures and design.Research FacilitationGroupA Research Facilitation Group meetsmonthly.
