LUX ETVERITASFLOREANTThe Universityof WinnipegTo the graduates of 2003:The University of Winnipeg is near a major intersection in Winnipeg, which is itself aCanadian crossroads, with axes along North-South and East-West routes. It is appropriate, then, that your graduating class represents, in some way, almost every nationality, religiousand cultural group; and that fact has had an impact on the way you think and work together. You have been a very outspoken and conscientious university cohort, advocating for tuitionfreezes, building the food bank, promoting respect for diversity, freedom of speech, andfreedom of thought. At the same time, you have completed your academic programs, tackledand solved numerous problems, and expanded your intellectual horizons immeasurably. That is why those of us who are gathered here to launch you into the world can do so withsuch confidence and optimism.Yes, the world is a very turbulent place right now. Never before, however, has the world neededmore those valuable gifts you have demonstrated in your time here: the determination topursue knowledge for its own sake, the genuine desire to understand another person’s orculture’s view, mutual respect, open-mindedness, social awareness and responsibility, thewillingness to fight for what you believe in—all prerequisites for citizenship in this changingand challenging world. You give us pride, and hope.Patrick DeaneActing President and Vice-President (Academic)The University of Winnipeg

To the graduates of 2003:This past year I was elected the President of the Alumni Association of The University ofWinnipeg, but my association with the University originated a long time ago. My father,Tony Nanton, graduated with United College’s Class of ’58 and I graduated with TheUniversity of Winnipeg’s Class of ’88. You may have chosen to come here because, like me,you were following in a family member’s footsteps, or you may be a trailblazer, the first inyour family to go to university.Either way, you deserve our profound congratulations on a job well done. We are confidentthat you will meet the challenges of the future as successfully as you have managed yourstudies here. You have built a strong foundation for your life as a creative person, asproductive worker, and as a global citizen. I hope you have also developed, as I did, a strongfeeling of belonging. You will always be a valued member of the University community, andthe Alumni Association is very proud to welcome you today.Doug Nanton, Class of ’88President, University of Winnipeg Alumni Association

Philip WeissHonorary Doctor of LawsPhilip Weiss has made it his life’s work to educateyoung people about the Holocaust. In honour of hisselfless efforts, Weiss will receive an HonoraryDoctor of Laws at today’s Convocation ceremony.Weiss has lectured extensively in high schools anduniversities throughout the province. “Over theyears, Philip’s impact on my students has beendramatic and more often than not, life changing,”says Allan Levine (BA ’75), a Winnipeg historian, teacher, and longtime friend of Weiss.Weiss’s own life in Drohobych, Poland was alteredirrevocably with Hitler’s rise to power. Followingthe German invasion in 1941, the Nazis herdedthree million Polish Jews behind ghetto walls. When Weiss’s ghetto was destroyed in 1943, Weissand other Jewish men were sent to labour camps, including Plaszow, the camp depicted inSchindler’s List. From there he was transferred tothe Mauthausen concentration camp. Knowing hewould not survive more than a week in the torturousstone quarry, he offered his services to theGermans as a technician and was transferredto a nearby plane factory.“I always maintained a vision of the world past theHolocaust, and that is what kept me going,”says Weiss. He was liberated on May 5, 1945.Miraculously, his mother, father, brother, andsister all survived—a rarity among Holocaustsurvivors. The family immigrated to Winnipeg, where he eventually opened Philip Weiss Limited,a furniture design and manufacturing business. In2002, after a successful career and many awardsfor innovative design, he closed the business andretired from his duties as president. He has not, however, retired from his duties as anambassador of goodwill. Weiss provided freescreenings of Schindler’s List for thousands ofchildren—earning a special citation from StevenSpielberg—and continues to provide financialassistance to students participating in the AsperFoundation Holocaust and Human Rights program, which sends young people to the HolocaustMuseum in Washington. Along with his late wife,Weiss established the Philip and Gertrude WeissEndowment, which recognizes individuals andorganizations engaged in Holocaust education aswell as those who strive to eliminate racism andreligious discrimination. In 1994, the ShaareyZedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem honouredhim with the Humanitarian Award recognizingexemplary citizenship. He was recognized onceagain in 1998, when he received the CanadianJewish Congress Award as one of 50 CanadianHolocaust survivors who have greatly contributedto the betterment of Canadian society. But most importantly, Weiss has earned a place inthe heart of everyone whose life he has touched.Levine describes Weiss as a rare, courageous, andcompassionate individual who exhibits the higheststandards of the community. “He is a man ofdignity; a scholar, philanthropist, and in everyway a fine person.”24 The University of Winnipeg

Farquhar Award for Excellencein Contributing to Self-GovernanceEd Byard believes that self-governance is criticalwithin a university setting. “Individuals are able tohave an impact on policy—and I think it’s importantthat we do,” he says.Today Byard will receive the Robin H. FarquharAward for Excellence in Contributing toSelf-Governance.Byard says it is gratifying to sit at a table withpeople from a variety of backgrounds and reach aconsensus on an issue. “You develop an appreciationfor other people’s viewpoints,” he says. “And it’sgood to meet people who work in other areaswithin the University.”Since arriving here in 1977 Byard has served onmany General Faculty Council committees, FacultyCouncil of Arts and Science committees, andSenate committees. But his work with TheUniversity of Winnipeg Faculty Association(UWFA) constitutes Byard’s most significantcontribution to the University’s self-governance.His connection to UWFA began in 1986 when heIn addition to his service on the executive, Byardhas served on numerous UWFA subcommitteesand as the UWFA Chief Negotiator for threeseparate contract negotiations, demonstratingexcellent negotiating and personnel managementskills. The key to his success as a negotiator?“Listening,” he says. “But you also have to knowthe issues well, consult widely, and incorporate asmany points of view as possible. If you do that andremain true to your principles, fair and balancedpolicies will emerge.”For Byard, these skills have been crucial whenresolving issues as Chair of the BiologyDepartment. “I enjoy the challenge,” he admits.“I’ve learned there is never just one way to solve aproblem; you have to analyze all sides of a situation.”The faculty and staff with whom he works makehis job easier by pulling together and workingeffectively, he notes. “I am fortunate to work witha highly motivated and ambitious group who striveto provide high quality instruction.”Colleagues and friends agree that Byard has made asalient and valuable contribution to both theBiology Department and the University. Mary RobinsonHonorary Doctor of LawsRich or poor, educated or unschooled, urban orisolated—for Mary Robinson, there is one universaltruth that applies to everyone: each and everyperson is entitled to the same human rights.Former President of Ireland, past United NationsHigh Commissioner for Human Rights, andcurrent Director of the Ethical GlobalizationInitiative, Robinson has dedicated her careerto helping lay the groundwork to ensure thisfundamental value is honoured in every cornerof the globe“Ms. Robinson is a truly exceptional example ofleadership who has worked assiduously to advancethe agendas of fairness, equality, openness, andjustice throughout the world,” says Allen Mills,Chair of The University of Winnipeg PoliticsDepartment and a member of the Friends of theUnited Nations. He adds that as HighCommissioner, Robinson was one of only ahandful of international civil servants dealingwith the problems of an agitated world.Robinson’s approach is a simple one: never toassume that she has all the answers, and to askpeople what they need and where their prioritieslie. “During the five years I served as UnitedNations High Commissioner for Human Rights,my work took me to over 80 countries,” saysRobinson. “I was able to speak with people of allwalks of life, and hear their views on what they sawas the best way to achieve a more peaceful and justworld. What I heard them say, again and again, from Calcutta to Cairo, from Caracas to Cape Town, was that global challenges—poverty, trafficking inpersons, HIV/AIDS, and environmental changes,to name only four—recognize no borders, and canonly be addressed by nations working togetherwith shared resources and common goals.”When awarded the J. William Fulbright Prize forInternational Understanding in 1999, she calledfor new emphasis on economic and social rights, including the right to education. “The humanrights that so many of us take for granted—freedomof speech and religion, the right to a fair trial—cannot flourish where people are deprived ofaccess to food, to healthcare, and education,”said Robinson. The University has had inspiring honorary doctorsin the past, but Mary Robinson seems an especiallyappropriate candidate this year, foregrounding theUniversity’s historic engagement with matters ofsocial justice, and signaling our desire to be evenmore involved with affairs on the national andeven international stage. LUX ETVERITASFLOREANTThe University of WinnipegCoat of ArmsThe Coat-of-Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governingbodies of the University during the academic session of 1972–73.The elements found within the Coat-of-Arms have been associated over the years with bothManitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in thelower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat-of-Arms of Manitoba College. Thegrape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, thelamp, and the open book derive from the Coat-of-Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross, the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity, was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield, the symbol of protection. Thelamp, the symbol of light, also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devotedfor over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book, representing instruction inthe way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student, symbolizes knowledge in ageneral sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limitedinterpretation. The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux etVeritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of thelamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as thegrape) in a Christian land (the cross).34 The University of Winnipeg

Academic DressAcademic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders), and a cap ormortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered which explainsthe variety seen in the academic procession.University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American IntercollegiateCode. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. Thebachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. Themaster’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeveswith an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has along semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They arefaced with velvet. The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred:Theology—red; Science—gold; Education—blue; Arts—white. The width of the edging isdetermined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors.Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are wornwith red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws;golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined inred and white, The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neitherhat nor hood.
