3 rd World CDS/ISIS Conference Took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 14 to 16September 2008 150 participants, from 31 countries and 4 continents Wide range of Presentations and Panel Discussions onthe history, applications and future of ISIS Softwareproducts. Source Code of the programs developed by BIREME(CISIS, IsisDLL, ISIS-NBP and ABCD) from now onwill be distributed under an L-GPL license and havebeen released on BIREME website. Rio Declaration on the Future ofthe ISIS SoftwareRecognizing that: The ISIS Software Family has a unique technologicalconcept and developmental mission to cope withInformation Storage and Retrieval Systems (ISRS),particularly for developing countries where the technologyis widely known and used; The new developments lead by UNESCO (esp. the J-ISISproject showing renewed commitment) and BIREME (esp.the Network Based Platform and the integrated librarymanagement software ABCD) represent importantadvancements toward the updating of the ISIS platformaccording to the state of the art in software development asapplied to information storage and retrieval systems;

Rio Declaration on the Future ofthe ISIS SoftwareRecognizing that: The ISIS Software Family has now fully embraced the Free andOpen Source Software approach and the support of UNICODEstructures to be fully open and multilingual, which best suits itsspecial mandate to promote self-reliance, sustainability andknowledge-creation-by-sharing with the librarians andinformation workers; The enormous merits and commitment of both UNESCO andBIREME in developing and supporting ISIS, which has broughtan extraordinary contribution to the automation of bibliographicdatabases, information systems and libraries mainly indeveloping countries, and has created, strengthened anddeveloped capacities on ISRS, and therefore increased theorganization and visibility of scientific, technical and culturalinformation from the developing world.;

Rio Declaration on the Future ofthe ISIS Software Affirming the continued value of the facilities offered by the ISISSoftware Family; Have decided to:1. Establish an international steering committee (provisionallyconsisting of the ISIS3 Organization and Scientific Committee)and accredited by UNESCO, to assist and collaborate withUNESCO, BIREME, and the ISIS Software Family DevelopersCommunity in fundraising, quality control and promotion;2. Support and contribute to the development of the ISISNBP coordinated by BIREME under a FOSS approach andto envisage its wide adoption and dissemination to updateISIS applications; to this end, a wide capacity buildingprogramme on the new software should be prepared;

Address national commissions to UNESCO in order toinform them about the impact of the ISIS Software familyso that they can request UNESCO to pursue itscommitment and support;4. Redefine the status of the ISIS national distributors that4. Redefine the status of the ISIS national distributors thatwill assume a new role in supporting training andpromotion activities in their local environments;

Rio Declaration on the Future ofthe ISIS Software Recommend:1. That UNESCO and BIREME pursue their commitment inleading the maintenance, support and updating of theISIS Software Family;2. Preparation of a Memorandum of Understandingbetween UNESCO and BIREME to ensure sustainability,especially for:a. the preservation of the technological identity and specificdevelopmental mission of ISIS;b. the facilitation of the use of BIREME’s ISIS-technologies inall UNESCO’s member states.

Introduction to J-ISIS Successor to WINISIS Developed thanks to collaboration with the Universityof Antwerp New multiplatform Free and Open Source Software(FOSS) ISIS suite. Same successful concepts and functionalities as theexisting ISIS suite while removing the restrictions thatcurrently exist. Producing a Client/Server system that supportsUNICODE while benefiting from the latest softwaredevelopments. Develop a long-term solution that would be modular,easy maintainable and extensible.

J-ISIS Project Java programming language chosen to the implementmultiplatform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, etc...)environment of the suite. Uses the Sun Netbeans platform for building modularapplications. Open Source Libraries used by the J-ISIS Engine: The Berkeley Database that can manage variable lengthrecords Lucene for indexing and searching MARC4J for ISO2709 and MARC I/O JFlex and JCup for generating from a grammar the printformatting language lexer and parsers

J-ISIS Project J-ISIS uses mainly open source technologies developed bySun Microsystems. UNESCO is negotiating a Memorandum of Understandingbetween UNESCO and Sun Microsystems. Project will be hosted on Sun Microsystems Java.net website to involve the java communities. The whole source willbe provided as a NETBEANS project including the 3 rdparties open source libraries. The J-ISIS project is free software, published under theterms of the GNU General Public License. There is absolutely NO WARRANTY for J-ISIS, its code andits documentation.

ISIS-Network Based Platform (NBP)

Introduction to ISIS-NBP Development in collaboration with BIREME ISIS-NBP is a “platform” to develop applications, it isnot an application itself. ISIS-NBP should be understood as an infrastructure orframework, upon which ISIS developers can use todevelop modern and wishfully better applications tomeet end users demands.
