Overview 3 rd World <strong>CDS</strong>/<strong>ISIS</strong> Conference J-<strong>ISIS</strong> <strong>ISIS</strong>-NBP ABCD


3 rd World <strong>CDS</strong>/<strong>ISIS</strong> Conference Took place <strong>in</strong> Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 14 to 16September 2008 150 participants, from 31 countries and 4 cont<strong>in</strong>ents Wide range <strong>of</strong> Presentations and Panel Discussions onthe history, applications and future <strong>of</strong> <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>twareproducts. Source Code <strong>of</strong> the programs developed by BIREME(C<strong>ISIS</strong>, IsisDLL, <strong>ISIS</strong>-NBP and ABCD) from now onwill be distributed under an L-GPL license and havebeen released on BIREME website. Rio Declaration on the Future <strong>of</strong>the <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>twareRecogniz<strong>in</strong>g that: <strong>The</strong> <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Family has a unique technologicalconcept and developmental mission to cope withInformation Storage and Retrieval Systems (ISRS),particularly for develop<strong>in</strong>g countries where the technologyis widely known and used; <strong>The</strong> new developments lead by UNESCO (esp. the J-<strong>ISIS</strong>project show<strong>in</strong>g renewed commitment) and BIREME (esp.the Network Based Platform and the <strong>in</strong>tegrated librarymanagement s<strong>of</strong>tware ABCD) represent importantadvancements toward the updat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong> platformaccord<strong>in</strong>g to the state <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>in</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware development asapplied to <strong>in</strong>formation storage and retrieval systems;


Rio Declaration on the Future <strong>of</strong>the <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>twareRecogniz<strong>in</strong>g that: <strong>The</strong> <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Family has now fully embraced the Free andOpen Source S<strong>of</strong>tware approach and the support <strong>of</strong> UNICODEstructures to be fully open and multil<strong>in</strong>gual, which best suits itsspecial mandate to promote self-reliance, susta<strong>in</strong>ability andknowledge-creation-by-shar<strong>in</strong>g with the librarians and<strong>in</strong>formation workers; <strong>The</strong> enormous merits and commitment <strong>of</strong> both UNESCO andBIREME <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g and support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>ISIS</strong>, which has broughtan extraord<strong>in</strong>ary contribution to the automation <strong>of</strong> bibliographicdatabases, <strong>in</strong>formation systems and libraries ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong>develop<strong>in</strong>g countries, and has created, strengthened anddeveloped capacities on ISRS, and therefore <strong>in</strong>creased theorganization and visibility <strong>of</strong> scientific, technical and cultural<strong>in</strong>formation from the develop<strong>in</strong>g world.;


Rio Declaration on the Future <strong>of</strong>the <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Affirm<strong>in</strong>g the cont<strong>in</strong>ued value <strong>of</strong> the facilities <strong>of</strong>fered by the <strong>ISIS</strong>S<strong>of</strong>tware Family; Have decided to:1. Establish an <strong>in</strong>ternational steer<strong>in</strong>g committee (provisionallyconsist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong>3 Organization and Scientific Committee)and accredited by UNESCO, to assist and collaborate withUNESCO, BIREME, and the <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Family DevelopersCommunity <strong>in</strong> fundrais<strong>in</strong>g, quality control and promotion;2. Support and contribute to the development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong>NBP coord<strong>in</strong>ated by BIREME under a FOSS approach andto envisage its wide adoption and dissem<strong>in</strong>ation to update<strong>ISIS</strong> applications; to this end, a wide capacity build<strong>in</strong>gprogramme on the new s<strong>of</strong>tware should be prepared;

Address national commissions to UNESCO <strong>in</strong> order to<strong>in</strong>form them about the impact <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware familyso that they can request UNESCO to pursue itscommitment and support;4. Redef<strong>in</strong>e the status <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong> national distributors that4. Redef<strong>in</strong>e the status <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ISIS</strong> national distributors thatwill assume a new role <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g andpromotion activities <strong>in</strong> their local environments;

That UNESCO and BIREME pursue their commitment <strong>in</strong>lead<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, support and updat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<strong>ISIS</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Family;2. Preparation <strong>of</strong> a Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Understand<strong>in</strong>gbetween UNESCO and BIREME to ensure susta<strong>in</strong>ability,especially for:a. the preservation <strong>of</strong> the technological identity and specificdevelopmental mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>ISIS</strong>;b. the facilitation <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> BIREME’s <strong>ISIS</strong>-technologies <strong>in</strong>all UNESCO’s member states.


Introduction to J-<strong>ISIS</strong> Successor to WIN<strong>ISIS</strong> Developed thanks to collaboration with the University<strong>of</strong> Antwerp <strong>New</strong> multiplatform Free and Open Source S<strong>of</strong>tware(FOSS) <strong>ISIS</strong> suite. Same successful concepts and functionalities as theexist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>ISIS</strong> suite while remov<strong>in</strong>g the restrictions thatcurrently exist. Produc<strong>in</strong>g a Client/Server system that supportsUNICODE while benefit<strong>in</strong>g from the latest s<strong>of</strong>twaredevelopments. Develop a long-term solution that would be modular,easy ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>able and extensible.


J-<strong>ISIS</strong> Project Java programm<strong>in</strong>g language chosen to the implementmultiplatform (W<strong>in</strong>dows, L<strong>in</strong>ux, Mac OS X, etc...)environment <strong>of</strong> the suite. Uses the Sun Netbeans platform for build<strong>in</strong>g modularapplications. Open Source Libraries used by the J-<strong>ISIS</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>e: <strong>The</strong> Berkeley Database that can manage variable lengthrecords Lucene for <strong>in</strong>dex<strong>in</strong>g and search<strong>in</strong>g MARC4J for ISO2709 and MARC I/O JFlex and JCup for generat<strong>in</strong>g from a grammar the pr<strong>in</strong>tformatt<strong>in</strong>g language lexer and parsers


J-<strong>ISIS</strong> Project J-<strong>ISIS</strong> uses ma<strong>in</strong>ly open source technologies developed bySun Microsystems. UNESCO is negotiat<strong>in</strong>g a Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Understand<strong>in</strong>gbetween UNESCO and Sun Microsystems. Project will be hosted on Sun Microsystems Java.net website to <strong>in</strong>volve the java communities. <strong>The</strong> whole source willbe provided as a NETBEANS project <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the 3 rdparties open source libraries. <strong>The</strong> J-<strong>ISIS</strong> project is free s<strong>of</strong>tware, published under theterms <strong>of</strong> the GNU General Public License. <strong>The</strong>re is absolutely NO WARRANTY for J-<strong>ISIS</strong>, its code andits documentation.

<strong>ISIS</strong>-Network Based Platform (NBP)


Introduction to <strong>ISIS</strong>-NBP Development <strong>in</strong> collaboration with BIREME <strong>ISIS</strong>-NBP is a “platform” to develop applications, it isnot an application itself. <strong>ISIS</strong>-NBP should be understood as an <strong>in</strong>frastructure orframework, upon which <strong>ISIS</strong> developers can use todevelop modern and wishfully better applications tomeet end users demands.
