The Nuffield is Southampton’s theatre, it is:
World class — The Nuffield makes awardwinning
and nationally acclaimed productions
here in Southampton that tour nationally and
internationally — and we bring theatre from all
over the world to our City for you to enjoy.
Entertaining and stimulating — we all want
to be entertained, but we also want to be made
to think. The Nuffield’s productions are lively,
and our aim is for you to leave the theatre
talking about what you have just seen — how
it made you feel and what it made you think.
New and contemporary — we love
nostalgia, but we also thrive on new
ideas, new interpretations of the classics,
new plays, innovative and contemporary
performance styles. There is a world of
difference out there for us to explore…
Collaborative — we work with the UK’s
best theatre makers — actors, directors,
circus artists, designers and comedians…
Nurturing — one of our primary aims is to
support and direct emerging talent. This includes
new theatre professionals — but also local people
— young and old — who want to learn new skills.
Claim your theatre and relish
your creativity — enjoy.
A royal family gather for Christmas. The father
misjudged act the natural order is upturned and
the scene is set for a story of family break-up,
homelessness and heartbreak.
BABY DOLL
From the same creative team who brought you
A Streetcar Named Desire. The Nuffield Theatre
production is directed by Patrick Sandford.
Nobody writes about desire as well as Tennessee
Williams — his plays seethe with what it is to be
human, and to be attracted to another. In this
sultry play of the Deep South, Baby Doll, the
twenty-year-old innocent (or is she?) tears her
older husband apart as his frustration grows when
she attracts the much younger, bronzed Sicilian
cotton manager — and an explosive emotional
triangle fast develops.
