No. 30 11 October 2012This Friday our school representatives will be attending the Showcase State awards in Brisbane. As you are aware,Frenchville was shortlisted in the academic success category. Our admin team members will present to a panel of educationalrepresentatives and answer questions about our Frenchville programs as part of the judging process. Whatever happens inthe finals, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our Frenchville staff team members – they have worked togetherconsistently to apply our improvement agenda strategies and to achieve great outcomes for our students. The models we areapplying have seen improvement in our data and we are always looking to achieve further improvements.Earlier this week we examined our 2012 data sets with the staff team. It is always great to have a fresh set of data, althoughwe must remember that this data was collected back in May during NAPLAN testing week, and sits alongside the regularclassroom assessment which is collected in an ongoing way in every room. Students have moved on considerably since thisNAPLAN time with their learning. Some of the quick highlights from our data this year:-99.1% of year three students achieved above the national minimum standard in reading. This is our best result ever.Knowing that very few students are below this standard means that our achievement tail end is decreasing. This is the resultof a great team effort – parents valuing reading, teachers encouraging the range of learners and providing targeted instructionand a consistently rising standard in the early years. Looking at what our prep students are doing currently, who knows what’spossible in future?-53% of year three students achieved in the top two bands of NAPLAN in reading – this is also a great story showing that themajority of our students are achieving at the highest levels. 58.6% of year three students achieved in the top two bands ingrammar and punctuation – again a great achievement-We had an increase in the reading mean and the upper two bands result for year five readers-In year seven, all results were flagged as comparable to our nation’s schools-In year three, five and seven Frenchville outperformed fellow like schools in fourteen out of a possible fifteen areas – likeschools are schools that are deemed demographically similar to our schoolOf course there’s always things to work on. Our writing results were not as strong this year across the board, although somegood results were still achieved and when we examine distance travelled data in writing from the year 3 to year 5 cohort andyear 5 to year 7 cohort we can see growth over time and some good individual student gains. Our numeracy results arestarting to stall a little, which means we need to invest in some teacher PD in this area and some further resourcing. We havebeen expecting this development, due to our increased focus on reading in the last three years which has taken up most ofour staff development time. We have been working with an external consultant in the maths subject area, commencing lastterm with some lesson modelling and continuing this term with some training on the pupil free day. Much of this work centreson mental computation. All students who sat the NAPLAN tests will receive their reports this Friday.Leisa NeatonPrincipalDon’t forget to follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/frenchvillessOctober October November11 P&C Meeting 22 Pupil Free Day 14 Spotlight Concert12 Year 1 Swimming 24 Year 7 Camp begins18 Free Dress Day for Daniel 26 Bookpack orders due
