Issue 135 - the Pembury Village Website

PEMBURY SCHOOL JUNIOR WARDENSTHIS YEAR saw the first group of Year 6 pupils atPembury School take part in a Junior Warden Scheme.This involved ‘yours truly’ visiting the school over severalweeks to give talks to those children participating to helpdevelop their ‘Life Skills’ and ‘Citizenship’.Thirty children from Year 6 took part and covered topicsincluding: Crime Prevention, Personal and CommunitySafety and Consideration for Others. Each topic includedbrief talks then activities, which I hoped would help thechildren remember what had been talked about. From therevision sessions each week, this proved very successful.If you get the chance, ask any one of them where the word ‘Constable’ comes from.Their final session was a visit to Camden Court to serve tea and cakes to residents there.This was part of their ‘Consideration for Others’ topic. The afternoon was enjoyed bychildren and residents alike. For the children the highlight, apart from the cakes, wasfinding out how different school is now, compared with 40, 50, even 60 years ago and forthe residents it was having the opportunity to share their memories.I was privileged to be able to present the 30 children with their certificates at the final‘Celebration Assembly’ at the school. Finally, I would like to thank those children who tookpart for their enthusiasm and attention during the sessions and also to wish them ‘GoodLuck’ as they start on the adventure of Secondary School.Parents, you should be Proud.Tom Younger, KCC Community Warden, PemburyPEMBURY CRICKET CLUBTHE CRICKET club this year has had amixed season on the playing front; thefirst team fighting against relegation andnever quite playing to their potential, andthe second eleven pushing for promotion.The junior section however continues togrow from strength to strength with circa 70boys and girls attending weekly coachingsessions, based at both the cricket club andPembury School, and the Under 11/13/15& 17 teams all competing well in theirrespective leagues. What continues to be ofgreat importance to the health of the club isthe number of junior members making thestep up into adult league cricket. AroundKent, it is only the clubs with this criticallink that survive, and here in Pembury wehave a fantastic production line thanks tothe work of our team of coaches and theparents who ensure our children are in theright place at the right time!I am in no doubt that part of the successhere is also down to the terrific familyatmosphere that now pervades the club.Much of this has been generated by the widerange of social functions being run throughoutthe year by Sandy Crouch. A packedclubhouse with members of all ages is now acommon sight at the club and we believe itwill be the foundation for our future success.That said, we are always on the look out fornew members, be they young or old and wewould be delighted to hear from you if youare interested in becoming a member.
