Discovery TMThe future of pipeline inspection

Tracerco’s Subsea Technologies include diagnostictechnologies designed to optimise the performanceand assess the integrity of your subsea assets aswell as a range of highly accurate and reliable subseainstrumentation to measure level and density. Our instrumentation has been designed to deliver in theharshest environments with over 20 years life and hasbeen deployed in many projects globally.

TracercoA world leading technology company, Tracerco hasused its scientifi c expertise for over 25 years in supportof the oil and gas industry, providing unique andspecialised detection, diagnostic and measurementsolutions. With facilities, knowledge and expertiselocated around the world, Tracerco provides itsinternational customers with the fi rst class serviceexpected from an industry leader.Discovery is Tracerco’s latest innovation in subseadiagnostics and is the world’s fi rst Subsea CT scanner.Pipelines can now be scanned from the outside withoutthe need to remove protective coatings, allowingassessment of fl ow assurance and pipeline integrity, even of unpiggable pipelines, with a totally non-intrusivescan and under normal pipeline operating conditions.1

“The only technologycapable of obtaininga clear visual imageof your unpiggablecoated pipeline.”Discovery TMTechnologiesIntroducing the world’s firstSubsea CT Scanner. As assets age over time oilfi eld professionals arecontinuously faced with the test of ensuring effi cientproduction and pipeline integrity. Inspection of thesepipelines subsea has often presented challengeswhere pigging is not an option or deemed too risky.Until now, inspecting a pipeline from the outside wascostly and often an ineffective high risk. Discovery TMhas broken down this barrier to inspection by allowingonline inspection of the pipe from the outside withoutremoving the protective coating.Discovery TM has been created for fl ow assurance andintegrity specialists concerned with subsea pipelinesthat cannot be inspected by conventional means suchas ILI tools.Discovery TM is a diagnostics tool designed to detectwall thinning and build-up such as hydrate, sand orwax. It can be deployed on unpiggable pipelines, online, without any interruption to production or theneed for pipeline modifi cations. Discovery TM is deployedusing an ROV and clamped onto the pipe. Real timecommunications allow instant assessment of pipelineconditions. Different versions are available based onpipe diameter and depth of deployment, all are fullymarinised. Unlike alternative technologies such asultrasonic and pulsed eddy current, Discovery TM can bedeployed, eliminating the expense and risk of damagingpipelines on coating removal/re-application.2

Tracerco’s inspection services are used subseato provide operators assurance of the integrity oftheir assets and to diagnose fl ow abnormalities.Understanding the production system andpipeline transport network is key to safeguardingproduction processing and implementingappropriate remedial action.Discovery TM provides a high resolution imageof pipeline contents and pipe wall thickness, enabling pipeline integrity fl aws and fl ow assuranceconditions to be accurately visualised.:: Inspection tool for unpiggable, coated pipelines, rigidand flexible risers, caissons, and pipe-in-pipe systems:: Tomographic wall thickness map of each scanninglocation provided:: Tomographic scan of pipe contents is also provided(showing any deposits or hydrate build-up):: Pipe-in-pipe lines can be inspected to measurethe wall thickness of both the inner and outer pipes:: Multiphase flow does not affect results:: Coating (concrete/FBE/polypropylene) does notneed to be removed:: Approximately 2 millimetre radial resolution:: Up to 80mm wall thickness capability3

Integrity and InspectionDiscovery TM provides integrity specialists with a reliablemethod of measuring the wall thickness of pipelines.Accurate sizing of wall thickness can be made in minuteswith a high resolution image of pipeline contents beingprovided from an external scan of the pipeline. Thetomographic image shows fl aws within the pipe walls andallows operators to plan for the future life of the pipeline.Deployment of Discovery TM brings several benefi ts tointegrity specialists::: Removes the concern and risk of internal inspectiontools getting stuck and interrupting production:: Allows unpiggable pipelines that were previouslyconsidered impossible to inspect to be assessed:: Eliminates the risk of the pipes being damaged orcorroded during coating removal/re-application:: It can be deployed quickly by ROV and no modifi cationto the pipeline is required:: Measurements can be taken online with no interruptionto production4

“It is believed that upto 40% of the worldoil and gas pipelinesare deemed to beunpiggable.” 1 51. www.europeanoilandgas.co.uk/article-page.php?contentid=5132&issueid=197 (2008):: Accurate sizing of wall thickness:: Pipe-in-pipe inspection capability:: No need to remove coatings (quickly deployed):: Immediate results:: Can be used for inspection of unpiggable pipelines:: Non-intrusive detection:: Easily deployed and simple operation through an ROV

“Tracerco’s cutting-edgetechnology fi nally fulfi lsthe long awaited dreamof having technology tohelp solve some of themost intriguing fl owassurance challenges.”Keijo Kinnari, Statoil Senior Specialist, Technology ExcellenceFlow AssuranceDiscovery TM provides fl ow assurance specialists with areliable method of diagnosing fl ow abnormalities withinpipelines without interruptionto pipeline operations.Flow Assurance Specialists can now obtain anaccurate measurement of hydrate and wax build-upin pipelines, which was previously impossible usingany other technology.Discovery TM can also diagnose the effectiveness of anyremedial treatment. This has several benefi ts for the operator::: Previously unobtainable data can now be obtainedon hydrate and wax build-up on pipelines to allow theoperator to optimise production:: Measurements can be taken online with nointerruption to pipeline operations:: There is no risk of a stuck pig:: There is no risk to production as the measurementsare taken from the outside of the pipeline:: No need to remove coatings (quickly deployed):: Immediate results:: Can be used for the inspection of unpiggable pipelines:: Non-intrusive detection:: Easily deployed and simple operation through an ROV6

“Instant pipelinevisualisation for bothinner and outer pipes.”Pipe-in-pipe IntegrityPipe-in-Pipe SystemsFor the fi rst time Discovery TM provides integrityspecialists with a reliable method of diagnosing wallthinning of both pipes in a pipe-in-pipe system.Integrity and inspection specialists can now obtaindata on weaknesses and wall thinning as well as wateringress between pipes, allowing both the inner andouter pipeline in a pipe-in-pipe system to be inspectedfrom the outside.:: Both pipelines can be assessed for integrity:: No need to remove coatings (quickly deployed):: Immediate results:: Can be used on unpiggable pipelines:: Non-intrusive detection:: Easily deployed and simple operation through an ROV8

Risers, Caissons and Pipe BundlesFor the fi rst time Discovery TM provides integrityspecialists with a reliable method of diagnosing wallthinning of internal fl owlines within caissons by externalinspection.Integrity and inspection specialists can now obtaindata on fl ow and integrity of all types of coated risersincluding caissons.“A tomographic wallthickness map of eachscanning location isprovided to 2mm radialresolution.”:: Immediate results:: Non-intrusive detection:: Easily deployed and simple operation through an ROV11
