2008 Northwestern Vermont Animal Resources GuideOld dog, new career: Therapy DogBy Sara RileyMountain Gazette staffDecember 2007:Our seven-year-old German shepherd dog (GSD) Bonnie is not an intuitivechoice for the role of Therapy Dog, but we think she will excel atthe job.On the main page of the website of Therapy Dogs of Vermont(www.therapydogs.org), it says its therapy teamsare “four legged volunteers and their handlers whowork on the emotional health of hospital patients,students in educational institutions, and residentsof nursing/retirement homes and correctional facilities.”When I was a child, my family adopted Thunder, a GSD of mature anddignified years. He was perfectly trained – we kids could not break thattraining; we tried! – our faithful companion and guardian for too few years.Thunder saved me once when, 11 years old, I foolishly interfered in amostly-noise fight between Thunder and a boxer. The boxer went for me,and that’s when Thunder got serious. He saved me from a mauling orworse. This is theprincipal difference betweena dog and a man.”Lisa Haynes, founder ofSave Our Strays (SOS) inHuntington, VT, likedTwain’s saying so muchthat she adopted it as themotto for her rescue organization.A former professionalwrestler known as TheAdjuster, Haynes’ lifechanged when she spotteda stray dog on the way toa wrestling match in Ft.Lauderdale, FL. The unsightlyGerman shepherddog had lost much of hiscoat and carried a scant 40pounds on his large frame.Though she had three rescueddogs of her own at home, Haynes stopped and coaxed the dog intoher car.Later, she called dozens of animal welfare agencies, yet no one offeredto help. She took “Shep” to her veterinarian who determined thescrappy dog was malnourished and ridden with fleas, tapeworms, andsarcoptic mange. The veterinarian recommended euthanasia, but Haynescouldn’t let Shep go without a fight. She took the dog home, giving himhome-cooked food, flea dips, and medication. Eventually, Haynes broughtthe dog back to health and found him a permanent home.“It was truly a rags-to-riches story,” Haynes says of the dog now named“Alf.” The experience motivated Haynes and her husband Roy to movefrom Florida to rural Vermont and start a rescue operation so they couldprovide care to homeless animals.Providing a Safe HavenHaynes founded SOS in 1996 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) operation. Alongwith her husband and several volunteers, Haynes rescues both dogs andcats. The organization takes animals from shelters as well as pets thatowners surrender. Veterinary care is provided and animals stay at theHaynes’ house until the right adopter is found.Despite other commitments such as volunteering at the local AgencyOn Aging, Haynes’ main focus is the shelter. Her husband is self-employed.“We need a flexible schedule to keep up with the animals’ needs,”Haynes says.Roy Haynes withLucky, the threelegged dog. The Haynes make up the difference ifSOS runs short on funds. Contributions come in from fundraisers andfrom people who receive SOS’s free quarterly newsletter, The Pet Gazette.Adoption events at pet stores also spur donations.6Fundraisers help to encourage adoptions. Additionally, SOS promotesanimals available for adoption through a “Pet of the Week” feature onlocal TV station WCAX. Available dogs and cats are posted on both thestation’s website and the SOS website. “Those outlets have been greatadvertisement for us,” Haynes says.Since its beginning, SOS has saved nearly 2000 animals, rescuingabout 125 dogs and cats a year. The SOS animal shelter sits on one anda half acres at the Haynes’ house. The dogs are housedogs, althoughkennels and crates can be found indoors and out. A fenced backyard isdivided into sections, enabling dogs to be grouped according to size forexercise. A 16-by-30-foot addition with a screened outdoor area andaccess to the indoors was build onto the garage for the cats.Lisa in the cat room with some good friends. Photo by Ron Mercer“We want the animals to live as they would with a family and tobecome socialized if they are not already,” Haynes says. “Then we arebetter able to assess their personalities.” Animals are matched withadopters according to their energy levels and health needs.SOS screens potential adopters through background checks and veterinaryreferences. The organization finds out if adopters have spayedand neutered their pets in the past, and if they live in a pet-friendlyhome.No matter the distance, SOS refuses to ship animals. “Everyone hasto actually come and visit the dog or cat they are interested in,” Haynessays. “Plus, we require our animals to meet all family members or otheranimals in the household before an adoption can take place.”A pack of St. Bernardsawaiting adoption enjoyLisa’s company.Photo by Ron MercerA Woman on a MissionHaynes is always seekingopportunities to rescue animalsand find homes forthem, which prompted her to apply to become a Purina Pro Plan Rallyto Rescue Ambassador. “I thought the Rally to Rescue program wouldbe a good way to draw attention to our cause,” she says. “The Rally toRescue tent and the collar and wristband sets that came in the event kithave helped to get more people interested. They have been a valuableasset to a small group like ours.”Haynes’ goal is not only to find homes for rescued animals, but alsoto show people the importance of caring for animals. An orangelonghaired cat named Mo is a good example of the need for animaleducation. A stray living at a local culinary school, Mo was the victim ofSOS continued page 7

It took five grueling months before Haynes nursed Moback to health.“Through all of his pain, Mo was still patient and kind,” Haynessays.However, when people came to adopt Mo, he would run and hide.When Haynes decided that Mo should live permanently at her home, helost his fear of visitors and became the “resident cat director.” Mo, whorecently died at age 12 of congestive heart failure, would greet visitorsat the door and help new arrivals adapt, playing with them until theygot used to him and other animals.Among her goals, Haynes aims to educate Vermont residents aboutthe importance of spaying and neutering pets. Yes, you can play in thewater.No, we are not going to punish you. It’s okay if you don’t understandsomething right away, we are not going to punish you.It took Bonnie months to get comfortable with that, and to come downfrom high-strung and nervous to content and comfortable. We’ve evensucceeded – finally – in putting weight on her so she doesn’t look emaciated,each rib and vertebra distinctly visible. And she has accepted livingwith cats.This new, relaxed Bonnie with the happy-dog expression has such agentle and soothing nature that she attracts, and accepts, attention from awide variety of people everywhere she goes, from Harvest Market to HomeDepot. She has never shown the least aggression to any person or dog, andis calm and grave while being petted by adults or smooched by children.About a month ago, we brought Bonnie to visit my mom. My mother,81, has Alzheimer’s and, after a second major operation for lung cancer, isin a nursing home in Massachusetts. It’s a great facility but it is still aninstitution where, with her very diminished cognitive faculties, she hashad to cope with being told she’s ill (she doesn’t remember her illness oroperations), being restricted in her activities, and losing her option andability to make decisions for herself. Several years into the spiral ofAlzheimer’s, she retains her formidable social skills and ability to connectwith people.In the nursing home, Mom has met a woman I’ll call Mary, who looksto be around 60. Mary is wheelchair-bound, has a very flat affect, seemsvery closed and withdrawn, and just about never speaks. Mom took thisas a challenge, and by constant attention has gotten the odd word from herhere and there: Mary’s name, “yes,” “no.”A few visits back, Mom brought me over and introduced me to Mary.“This is my daughter from Vermont.” No reaction. “She lives in a logcabin.” Nothing. “She has three dogs.” Wait – Mary’s expression changed:a slight widening of the eyes, a quick glance at me.“Yes,” I said, “I have three dogs. Do you like dogs?” A slight smile, aslight raising of eyes. “My dogs are big dogs. Do you like big dogs?” Aslight frown, a downward glance. “Okay, no. Do you like small dogs?”The slight smile, the lilt of the eyes, and a quiet whisper: “Yes.” Furtherconversation, rather one-sided, revealed that Mary likes dogs, small dogs:small brown poodles. Mary spoke several words to me and showed interest,a marked difference to her normal expressionless silence.So when I was able to bring Bonnie down to see her in the nursinghome, Mom and I took Bonnie to meet Mary. Mary stroked Bonnie softly and looked enraptured.I told Mary a little of Bonnie’s history: she’s had six litters of puppies,she’s a champion in the show ring and competition field. I showed herBonnie’s teeth that were broken by a rough trainer; Mary’s eyes narrowedand she frowned. “Yes, that’s exactly how I feel about it, too,” I told Mary.By the end of our half-hour visit, Mary was independently reaching outto pat Bonnie, stretching her arm to do it. Mary’s expression had softenedand opened, and she had spoken several entire sentences of four to fivewords.This is what a therapy dog is supposed to do, I think. Mom loved theseveral hours she spent patting Bonnie, talking to her, looking into herdeep eyes. And Mary was transformed.So we contacted Therapy Dogs of Vermont to find out more about gettingBonnie, and ourselves as her handlers, certified for this new career.More specific qualifications for therapy dogs include that they be atleast a year old, “obedience trained and responsive to basic commands,”and have a stable, tolerant temperament, non-aggressive toward people orother dogs. Hundreds of cases of animal rabies have been reportedthroughout Vermont since 1992 and the outbreak will continue to be aproblem for many years.No one can tell if an animal has rabies by looking at it. Rabid animalsmay seem normal or can be lethargic or aggressive. Usually thereis a change in normal behavior. Any animal wounded by a wild animalnot available for testing must be regarded as having been exposed torabies. Rabies is mainly transmitted by a bite. Rare non-bite exposurescan occur if wet infectious saliva or nervous tissue contacts a fresh openwound or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Rabies virus is not found in blood,urine, feces, or skunk spray.Avoid wildlife, vaccinate domestic pets and livestock (check with yourveterinarian every year), and know who in your community (town healthofficer or other local official or neighbor) will help you with an animalproblem. If you think you have found orphaned wildlife, don’t touch them,call your animal control officer or a game warden for help. Game wardenscan be reached by calling the Vermont State Police. If you are bitten by ananimal, wash the wound immediately and call your doctor.Bats are an important part of our ecosystem but should be appreciatedat a distance. Bats are increasingly implicated in human rabiescases. A bat found in a room with a sleeping individual or an unattendedchild, or a bat that has made physical contact with an individual,should be tested for rabies.A booster should be considered for a currently vaccinated domesticpet with wounds of unknown origin, whereas an unvaccinated domesticpet should be immediately vaccinated and kept under the owner’s controland observation for six months (additional boosters at three andeight weeks should be considered in high risk situations). Log rabiesconversations with owners on the animal’s record.The local health officer shall cause an apparent healthy domesticanimal that bites an individual, regardless of vaccination status, to beconfined and observed for ten days for signs of illness, usually at aresponsible owner’s residence.The VT Department of Health (VDH) is responsible for the preventionof rabies in humans and for the management of animals that mayhave exposed humans.
