7th EFMC Short Course on Medicinal Chemistry37April 21-24, 2013Oegstgeest (near Leiden), The NetherlandsCourse OrganisersGeorge Keseru, Gedeon Richter, HungaryAndrew Leach, John Moores University, UKLocal OrganiserHenk Timmerman, VU University Amsterdam,The NetherlandsPrinciplesof MolecularRecognitionEFMC Yearbook 2013The interactions between molecules governall of the properties that determine whethera compound will be an effective drug ornot. This course will present the fundamentalconsiderations determining the thermodynamicand kinetic properties of interactions betweenmolecules. The first part of the course will beginwith an introduction to the types of interactionsthat are usually considered important fordrug-like compounds, including some of theless commonly considered weaker interactiontypes. The decomposition of these interactionsinto their thermodynamic components willfollow. A description of the experimental andcomputational methods available to studyintermolecular interactions and their strengthsand weaknesses will follow. The second part of the course will focus onapplied aspects. This will take two forms:detailed presentations considering most keymolecular properties and some hands on tutorialexercises. Both will be structured around reallife case studies taken from the literature andthe presenters’ own experience. The areasof application will be directly relevant to theproperties of a molecule typically modulatedby medicinal chemists. Interactions in thesolid state and their similarities and differenceswith interactions in solution determine thesolubility of a molecule. The interactionswith a range of solvent types determine manypartitioning effects. The interactions betweensmall molecules and proteins and betweendifferent protein molecules determine theaffinity of compounds for their target andantitargets as well as their ability to competewith other compounds present in biologicalenvironments. The considerations governingthe kinetics of association and dissociationhave come into focus in recent years; theyprovide confounding influences that canlead to surprising in vivo effects and moreimportantly to better therapeutic index. The various presentations and tutorials will betaken by experts in the field who will presenta broad historical perspective as well ascutting edge research from both academiaand industrial settings. The course will take aninformal approach and ought to prompt plentyof discussion among participants.

The annually elected committee is primarily responsible for the organisation of scientific meetingsand symposia, supporting educational activities in the UK, and advising the Society on policies that directly affect the BMCS.Specifically, the BMCS aims to further the interests of all members of the RSC, both industrial and academic, involved in thepursuit and understanding of biologically active molecules. The predominant areas thus include pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavours and fragrances. It also acts to promote public awareness of the crucial role played by chemistry in the modernindustrial environment. The BMCS is particularly active in the organisation of scientific meetings and does so in collaborationwith a wide variety of other groups both within and external to the RSC. Over the past few years the BMCS has been especiallyactive in promoting some of the important interfacial areas in which chemists are intimately involved. In recent years, it hasheld internationally attended meetings with the EFMC, the Society for Chemical Industry, the Society for Medicines Researchand with the Biochemical Society. On average six or more scientific meetings are held each year. Support for educationalactivities, such as the running of lectures and day schools, and the provision of equipment are also an important componentof BMCS activities. Indeed, some of these initiatives are now established as annual events. The BMCS also administers annualawards that acknowledge major scientific achievements in both academia and industry that have been carried out within theUK.
