MORE ON THE 8-5John Ellis has brought back more news and the firstpictures of Pat BeaUy's new design the B-5 one of whichwe print here. (See also S&G Feb. issue, p32; June, 1976,pI15.)This picture shows clearly how far forward the wings ofthe B-5 are mounted (the pilot sits behind the main spar)and the unique arrangement of the undercarriage "skid"which should prevent nose-overs on landing. Whenretracted it faires into the front fuselage which consists of35 layers of GRP to take the various loads. The rear fuselage and fin are the cleanest John has everseen. The tailplane, elevator and rudder all being beautifullyfaired. The entire tailplane moves completely fortrimming by means of a low-geared cockpit lever. Contraryto Mike Garred (last issue) John states that the fuselageis of glass-fibre/wood and not glass-fibre/metal construction. The 15-19m wingtip extensions carry the same lift coefficientand are of narrow chord. Like the camber changethey are operated electrically. (The extensions can be seenin the photo.)The camber changing portion of the wings consists of asort of fairing in sections, each section being flexibly sealedto the next.Standard flight flaps are incorporated with a landingflap position. The latter is, however, not interconnectedwith the ailerons. All controls throughout the B-5 aretotally mass-balanced.The calculated performance shows an LID of I:42 at751ts and 1:14 at 150kts. VNE is around 2ookts. As Johnsays-think of the height gain after crossing a startline!First flight is now scheduled to lake place in MayorJune. For those interested the fuselage on the wall in the backgroundis that of the old BJ-3, its wings were later used onthe BJ-4.BIGGIN HILL BLACKPOOL BOURNEMOUTH-HURNInternationalAir Pageant andAir Pageant11 12 JuneAir FairInternationalSOUTH COAST AIR RACE1314 15 May Air Rallyon Southern Television(13 Trade) 2728 29 May 9 June at 6.00 p.m.Free entry for visiting aircraft and crews.Special enclosure with viewing area and refreshment tent, available to Pilot and Air Traffic licence holders.USED AIRCRAFTSALES PARKS£ 10011 in pershow per aircraft .No commission onSoles is requiredEntry forms on requestApply: J.
