We keenly await thearrival of an Astir and PIK 20 as replacementsfor the Kestrel and Std Libelle.The Christmas party was most successful,thanks 10 the ladies section. Our AGM inJanuary was well attended and the girls provideda superb buffet.I.Mc.FULMARMembers are busy preparing the aircraft andMT for the summer but our future at Milltownis still in dispute. However, we are getting a fewbonuses with the ,occasional wave climbs fromthe winch-our lug is out of s.ervice. Recentsuccesses include climbs by Oscar Constable(8900ft) and Malcolm Thompson (7500fl),both for Silver h,eight.With the return of our Pilatus we are lookingforward to an expedition to Aboyne in March.We welcome Steve Step:henson from Marhamwho will help, with the ab-if/ilia training. Alaswe must say farewell to AI Fox, deputy Chairman,who has moved to Chilterns GC, and ourdeputy CFI, Tim O'Donovan, on leaving theRAF. Ourfaithful T-21s are leaving us, the K-6CR is alsobeing sold and we are taking delivery of aBlanik. This will give us a fleet comprised ofthe following: K-7, Blanik"K-8, K-18, K-6Eand Std Cirrus.'1349 (Woking) Squadron ATe SponsoredFlight.On Sunday, June 27, two members attempted asponsored five hour flight in the Squadron's T­21. The club operates this glider in cooperationwith the Kestrel <strong>Club</strong>. The twopilots, Fit/lt C. Chappell and CWO K.Horlock, had waited weeks for the right conditions.On the third launch they found stronglift and climbed to 8200ft. For the nexI threehours the height varied between 5000 and8000ft with cloud streets towards the end of theflight. They landed at7.l4pm after 4hrs 42min.P.W.A.PHOENIX (RAF Brliggen)In <strong>No</strong>vember we hosted the RAF Germany<strong>Gliding</strong> Association's AGM and were pleasedto welcome the Association's new Chairman,Air Commodore J. D. Jones, and some 50members from the other British clubs inGermany. We were the proud recipients of theNATO Challenge Cup-presented for thegreatest improvement over the previous year inbadges gained, number of launches, and hoursand distances flown.In December we had a pantomime in our aircraftworkshop which was a great success, aswas the children's party afterwards-manythanks to Ann <strong>No</strong>rth-Graves, and F.Christmas. December also brought our Blanikto replace one of our K-7s. It is proving sopopular we hope to replace one of our other K­7 with another Blanik later this year. Theexpedition to Issoire, France, is in February,and we hope to run an aerotow course shortlyat Vennebeck. Tim Oulds is to representPhoenix at the Inter-Service Regionals Compsthis year, the first time the GGA have sent acompetitor and aircraft from Germany.January brought two welcome solos-GabyDrOcker, just 16, daughter of one of ourNATO members, and Steve Wilcox,-and asad goodbye to Wally Lombard. Wally, twiceCompetition Director for the Delmold Comps,was Army Member for the Association and itsVice-Chairman. He has served us well as a fullCat and tug pilot, among other duties, and wasinstrumental in erecting our all-metalhangar-now that we are attempting to re-cladour MT hangar we are even more appreciativeof his efforts! Thank you Wally for all youhave done for Phoenix and congratulations onyour promotion.M.T.TWO RIVERS (RAF Laarbruch)Our three-aircraft expedilion to Vennebeck in<strong>No</strong>vember resulted in six durations and a totalof 97 flying hours over the fortnight. Ourthanks to Vince Mallon in particular for hishard work to make this possible.At the RAF German <strong>Gliding</strong> AssociationAGM at RAF BrOggen in December our thendeputy CFI, Geoff Millward, was presentedwith the Pete Lane trophy for the fastest closedcircuit of the year. Geoff has since taken overas CFI from Eddie Edwards, to whom we say agrateful thank you.We are sorry to say goodbye to Mike andWen Uphill on their posting to Odiham andwe lost Bob and Rosemary Leadbeater toCosford: Field Treasurer and chief cookrespectively, they did a tremendous amount forthe club.Congratulations to Phil Buckley, our mostrecent solo pilot, and goodluck to Mike Davis,Harry Thomas and Martin Spalding on theirinstructors' courses in March.A.C.G.WREKIN (RAF Cosford)Our Chipmunk has a new C of A, thanks tomuch preliminary work followed by a solidfortnight spent at Bicester by Jake Jacobs,helped by Mick Boyden and Andy Bachelor.Our thanks also to Andy Gough and theRAFGSA Centre for their help.Ron Jackson was our first solo of the year,after only 35 launches, and we hope 't'llat he willbe followed by six .others on our ab-illiliacourse at Easter. OUT thanks 10 Frank Kennedywho recently handed over his job as Statsmember to Andy Bachelor but has volunteeredto assist in maintaining the various graphs hehas put up to chart our progress towards ourtargets.Roger Staines has put in great effort runningweekly lecture evenings and film showsthroughout the winler, and has recently takenover as Secretary from Dave Wood. Our appreciationto Dave who has been Secretary forthree years as well as an instructor.
