O
Deacon Johnnie Lee Turner
n March 1, 2012 the Lord called Deacon Johnnie Lee Turner,
Sr. home to rest. He was born July 11, 1935 in Lee County,
South Carolina to the late Cleve and Almeta Turner. He was
the last survivor of five children.
Known as “Frizz” by his friends, Johnnie was educated in the public
schools of Lee County. He was united in holy matrimony to Lueaster
(Patterson) Turner on August 3, 1957. This union blessed them with
five children.
Deacon Turner served in the United States Army, and received an
honorable discharge upon the completion of his services. His love for
fast cars and the open road led him to a career as a truck driver. He
served as a driver for various companies, including Goodyear, from
whom he retired after 18 years of service. He also drove for Builders
Transport for 20 years. Upon his retirement, Deacon Turner served
as a driver for Senior Resources until his health began to fail.
Johnnie was a member of Second Nazareth Baptist Church, where he
served faithfully and helped countless others. This loving husband,
father, and grandfather ensured that all those close to him had as
close a relationship to the Lord as he did. Johnnie served in the
Deacons' Ministry, and also sang on the Musical and Male Choruses.
He was often featured as a soloist, and his rendition of “Lily in the
Valley” was requested on many occasions.
Johnnie was preceded in death by two children: Joyce and Johnnie
“Lee” Jr.; his brother, Willie; and three sisters: Alice Clyburn, Edna
Thomas, and Geneva “Smokey” Turner.
Those left to cherish his memories are his devoted wife of 55 years,
Lueaster; three children: Jackie (Nate) Jeffcoat, Anthony, and Stacey,
all of Columbia, South Carolina; one aunt: Almeta Robinson of
Camden, South Carolina; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lila (Willie) Turner
of Columbia, South Carolina; eight grandchildren: Nathan, Tiffany,
Tyesha (Greg) Thomas, Kelly, Lee “John-John” Jr., Lamar (Ophelia)
Dunlap, Anquinette Allen, and Stacey Jr.; seven great-grandchildren,
and hosts of other caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who
will miss him dearly.
